For canvas shoes, choose a fabric marker for controlled lines and detail, or a water-based paint marker when you want more opaque, layered color. Canvas is a textile, but not every shoe upper behaves alike. POSCA notes that natural materials absorb more heavily; coatings, construction, and the specific fabric can also affect application. Before starting the full design, try the marker on a discreet spot or comparable scrap and check whether the color spreads, fades, or shows through.
How to prepare and apply marker to canvas shoes
1. Check the upper and test the marker
Make sure the area you plan to decorate is textile, not a coated or synthetic panel. Test a small, inconspicuous area or a matching scrap with the complete process you intend to use, including any heat or finishing step. This helps reveal bleeding and absorption before they affect the visible design.

2. Protect the shoe and work surface
Put absorbent paper or another suitable backing behind the area being marked. POSCA recommends absorbent material beneath fabric because natural materials can take up more ink; inside a shoe, backing also helps protect the lining and catch bleed-through. Work in manageable sections and let the design dry before adding more color.
3. Consider cleaning the fabric first
POSCA advises machine-washing fabric before decorating to remove industrial coatings from new material or dirt from used material. A whole shoe may not be suitable for machine washing, so do not apply that instruction blindly: follow the shoe maker’s cleaning guidance, and decorate only when the surface is clean and dry. POSCA says drying time and the number of coats vary, so assess coverage visually rather than relying on a fixed count.

4. Set the design only as the product directs
For its fabric designs, POSCA advises ironing once dry from the reverse without steam, with the temperature adjusted to the fabric and greaseproof paper as added protection. If ironing is unsuitable, it describes using a hair dryer about 30 cm away, moving it in small circles. On a shoe, confirm that the upper and construction can tolerate the chosen heat treatment before proceeding. Do not iron directly onto a shoe or use heat simply because another marker brand recommends it.
POSCA’s FAQ separately recommends a water-based aerosol varnish to preserve its trainer customization. That is POSCA’s advice, not a compatibility guarantee for every marker, varnish, or shoe finish. How to care for decorated shoes
Care instructions vary by marker, so use the directions for the exact product rather than treating one maker’s advice as universal. POSCA recommends washing fabric inside out at low temperature. Sharpie’s fabric-marker page recommends cold water, inside out, followed by air drying. Crayola says to heat-set its fabric markers before laundering or wearing and cautions that washing beforehand reduces color intensity. These are product-specific directions, not a single care routine for every decorated shoe.
None of the cited sources establishes a dependable number of washes, wears, or months for marker designs on canvas shoes. Sharpie says marker longevity cannot be calculated with a mathematical formula; its examples concern surfaces such as paper or artist’s canvas, not wear tests on shoes. Treat longevity as uncertain and avoid relying on an untested design where color loss would matter.
