The best metal floral frog is the one that fits your vessel, holds stems in the positions you want, and has construction details suited to your use. These pin-based holders are also sold as kenzans or pin frogs. There is no source-backed universal winner among the options below, so use the size, shape, material, and backing details to choose for your arrangement.
What a metal floral frog does
A metal floral frog is a base with upright pins that support cut stems at chosen angles and positions. The same tool is commonly called a kenzan or pin frog, and is used for ikebana-style as well as other structured arrangements. The Japan Foundation’s flower-arrangement activity document identifies a kenzan (flower frog) among the equipment for arranging flowers: Japan Foundation flower-arrangement activity.
How to choose one for your vessel
Match the footprint to the usable interior
Measure the flat area inside the vessel where the frog will sit, not just the vessel’s outside diameter. The frog should fit securely while leaving room for stems to fan out. Bishy Barnabee’s recommends measuring the vase base, and Chive’s range illustrates why checking exact dimensions matters: it lists round, rectangular, and Sun and Moon shapes in multiple sizes.

Choose a shape for the arrangement
- Round: A straightforward option for a round bowl or a compact arrangement centered in a vessel.
- Rectangular: Useful when the vessel has an elongated interior or you want to distribute stems along a line.
- Sun and Moon or other shaped forms: Check the listing’s specific dimensions against the vessel rather than assuming the name indicates fit.

Check the exact base, pins, and backing
Listings vary in how specifically they identify materials. Some describe a metal base, while others distinguish brass bases and spikes or stainless-steel pins. A rubber backing or gasket may also be included, but it is not stated for every model. Verify the details for the exact size and variant you intend to buy; do not assume that the pin and base are made of the same metal.

How to use a pin frog
- Set the frog in a shallow vessel with water. The Floral Society describes placing it in a shallow bowl and covering it with water.
- Trim stems to the lengths you want for the design.
- Position each cut stem on the pins. Bloomist describes pressing the stem onto the pins at the desired point.
