The most defensible designer-recommended navy shortlist is Benjamin Moore Hale Navy HC-154, Farrow & Ball Hague Blue No. 30, Benjamin Moore Gentleman’s Gray 2062-20, and Sherwin-Williams Naval SW 6244. They are not a universal ranking: each responds differently to undertone, daylight, surface and the mood you want. Sherwin-Williams Salty Dog SW 9177, Anchors Aweigh SW 9179 and Rainstorm SW 6230 provide three more manufacturer-curated directions.

Which navy blue paint colors deserve a place on your shortlist?
The word navy describes a family of dark blues, not one predictable appearance. The colors below are supported by manufacturer guidance and designer-attributed coverage, but the evidence does not establish a statistically ranked list of the best paints. How undertone changes the result
Two swatches can both be called navy yet behave very differently. Benjamin Moore’s guidance and the designer interviews distinguish warm and cool tendencies, while the cited examples show green, gray, violet and near-black casts. Undertone is the color that emerges around the dominant blue; it affects whether the room feels tailored, earthy, icy, theatrical or almost black.
Green-leaning navy
Hague Blue is the clearest example in this group. Keren Richter of White Arrow calls it a strong, very dark color with a bit of green undertone. In a room with warm wood, brass or beige, that green component can make the navy feel enveloping and historic. In very bright light, however, the same component may become more noticeable, so a small sample is essential.

Gray-tempered navy
Rainstorm is described by Sherwin-Williams as a deep blue with a slate-gray undertone. Gentleman’s Gray also carries blue-green depth tempered by gray. Gray can soften the contrast against stone, concrete, taupe or muted upholstery, but it can make a dark room appear flatter if there is little light to activate the blue.
Near-black and violet impressions
Anchors Aweigh is positioned as midnight blue, and Gentleman’s Gray may move toward black on a ceiling. Dark pigments absorb more visual light than pale colors, so a navy can look almost black in a shaded corner and distinctly blue beside a black object. Do not judge undertone from a tiny online square or from a single photograph.
Color-by-color guidance
Benjamin Moore Hale Navy HC-154: the practical first sample
Hale Navy is the strongest all-purpose starting point in this set. Benjamin Moore describes HC-154 as a use-anywhere navy with a classic maritime feel and lists its light reflectance value at 8.36 on the current product page accessed October 13, 2026. LRV is a product specification, not a popularity score or a promise about how bright your room will look.
Its broad positioning makes it a sensible candidate for a full room, an island, a bookcase or an exterior door, but that flexibility does not remove the need for testing. Benjamin Moore explicitly notes that screen representations may differ from actual paint. Compare a physical chip, brush-on sample or peel-and-stick sample with your flooring, trim and furnishings before deciding.

Farrow & Ball Hague Blue No. 30: the cocooning choice
Hague Blue is the most deliberately dramatic option among the designer descriptions. Keren Richter describes its slight green undertone, while Marie Flanigan calls it decadent and rich, creating a cozy, cocoon-like effect. Those comments point to a mood rather than a universal room rule: it is appropriate when you want the walls to participate strongly in the design instead of acting as a quiet backdrop.
The cited designers discuss Hague Blue for bedrooms, small living rooms and exterior walls. A lacquered finish has also been suggested by one designer as a way to reflect light and create an illusion of greater space. Treat that as a design suggestion, not a guaranteed optical result; sheen changes reflections, maintenance and how evenly surface flaws show.
Benjamin Moore Gentleman’s Gray 2062-20: the light-sensitive blue-green
Gentleman’s Gray sits between navy, blue-green and charcoal. Henry Cheung of Bestor Architecture explains that the blue pigment picks up light differently depending on how much light reaches the surface: walls can appear deep indigo while a ceiling leans closer to black. That observation makes this color particularly useful for a room where you welcome variation, but risky if you need every surface to match a fixed sample appearance.
It suits an intimate reading space, study or monochromatic room in which trim, ceiling and furnishings are intentionally coordinated. Paint a test area on both a vertical wall and the planned ceiling if you intend to use it overhead. The same color can look materially different on those planes.
Sherwin-Williams Naval SW 6244: the established classic
Sherwin-Williams named Naval its 2020 Color of the Year. That is useful historical context: the manufacturer presented the shade as a grounding navy at a particular moment. It does not establish that Naval is currently the most popular navy or that designers universally prefer it.
Sherwin-Williams’ feature pairs Naval with natural materials and suggests warmer metallics and green accents. Those pairings work as a starting direction, not a mandatory palette. Test the navy beside your actual wood, stone, metal and white trim because the surrounding colors alter its apparent temperature.

Sherwin-Williams Salty Dog SW 9177: a bolder accent
Salty Dog is described by Sherwin-Williams as a bold navy. The manufacturer suggests it for a pop of color in a kitchen or living room, making it a useful option when a full-room navy feels too enveloping but a pale accent feels insipid. Try it on cabinetry, a fireplace wall or a defined architectural section, and view it beside countertops and flooring before ordering.
Sherwin-Williams Anchors Aweigh SW 9179: midnight depth
Anchors Aweigh is presented as midnight blue. Select it when the design brief calls for an especially dark, mysterious finish rather than a bright nautical blue. In a room with limited daylight it may read blue-black, so test it near the darkest and brightest parts of the space. Light-colored trim can increase the perceived drama; dark trim can make the entire composition recede.
Sherwin-Williams Rainstorm SW 6230: navy with slate influence
Rainstorm adds a slate-gray undertone to deep blue. That makes it a candidate for homes where a pure, high-contrast navy would feel too vivid. The gray influence can coordinate with stone, concrete and cool neutrals, but artificial bulbs may emphasize either the blue or the gray. Keep the sample in place through an evening with the lights you actually use.
Choose by room, light and desired mood
Bedrooms
A dark blue can make a bedroom feel enclosed and restful when the saturation is intentional. Hague Blue is the most explicitly cocooning choice in the cited designer comments. Hale Navy offers a less green-leaning starting point, while Gentleman’s Gray is appropriate if you want the walls and ceiling to shift toward indigo and black as light falls. Check the color beside bedding and window treatments before painting all four walls.
Living rooms
For a living room that needs a strong but adaptable backdrop, start with Hale Navy or Naval. Salty Dog is the more overt accent option if you want color concentrated on one wall or a built-in. In a small living room, a dark color can be intentional and enveloping rather than automatically making the room feel smaller; the result depends on lighting, finish and how much of the room receives the color.
Kitchens and cabinetry
Salty Dog’s manufacturer guidance specifically identifies a kitchen as a place for a pop of color. Hale Navy and Naval can also be tested on islands or lower cabinets when you want navy without enclosing the entire room. Compare the sample to countertop veining, backsplash grout and appliance finishes; a green or gray undertone that is invisible on a white card may become obvious beside those materials.

Reading rooms and studies
Gentleman’s Gray is suited to an intimate reading space or monochromatic treatment because its blue-green depth can support a deliberately close atmosphere. Hague Blue serves a similar mood with more overt green and drama. Paint sample boards on the wall behind your desk and on the wall opposite the window so you can see how task lighting changes the effect.
Exteriors
The cited designer coverage discusses Hague Blue on exterior walls. Exterior light is stronger and more variable than indoor light, and surrounding masonry or landscaping can alter the perceived undertone. Test a large patch on the actual elevation and inspect it in morning, midday and overcast conditions before treating the designer suggestion as a specification.

Benjamin Moore recommends display chips, brush-on samples or peel-and-stick samples at home. Sampling is not a formality with dark blue: it is the only reliable way to see the interaction among pigment, substrate, sheen and changing light.
- Collect physical samples. Use a manufacturer chip, brush-on sample or peel-and-stick sample rather than relying on a screen. Record the exact name and code on each sample so similar-looking navies are not confused.
- Place samples near the elements that will remain. Put them beside trim, flooring, counters, tile, upholstery and metal hardware. A white store card cannot show how the same navy behaves beside your warm beige or cool gray.
- Sample more than one wall. Paint or position the sample on a wall facing the primary window and another in a shaded area. If the ceiling will be navy, test a horizontal or overhead area as well; Gentleman’s Gray demonstrates why plane matters.
- Watch a full day. Check morning, midday, late afternoon and evening under the room’s normal lamps. Note whether green, gray, indigo or near-black impressions appear at the times you use the room.
- Evaluate the intended finish. A designer’s lacquer suggestion for Hague Blue illustrates that sheen changes reflections. Compare the finish you plan to buy, not a flat sample if you intend a different sheen.
- Live with the sample before purchasing. Move furnishings or large sample boards if necessary and view the color from the doorway and seating positions. Only then estimate the amount of paint required.
Pairing navy with other colors and materials
Benjamin Moore lists white, gray, beige, taupe and sand as possible partners for navy, along with bolder yellow, orange and pink. The right choice depends on undertone: a green-leaning navy often feels coherent with warm natural materials, while a slate-gray navy can sit comfortably beside cooler stone and gray textiles.
Light neutrals
White and pale neutrals create the clearest contrast with a dark wall. Compare the undertone of the trim white with the navy sample; a stark blue-white can make a warm navy look yellower, while a creamy white can soften a cooler blue.
Warm natural materials
Wood, sand, beige and taupe can keep a dark navy from feeling severe. Sherwin-Williams’ Naval guidance also points toward natural materials and warmer metallic accents. Use actual material samples because the same navy may look warmer beside oak than beside polished gray stone.

High-energy accents
Yellow, orange and pink can create a deliberate contrast with navy. Keep the accent on a measured element such as upholstery, artwork or a single piece of furniture while you assess whether the navy’s undertone supports it. A green-leaning navy may need a different accent balance than a slate-gray navy.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing from a screen
Digital color is an approximation. Benjamin Moore cautions that screen representations may differ from actual paint, so a web image cannot replace a physical sample. If the color feels wrong after application, stop before completing the room and compare a physical sample under the room’s changing light.

Rich blue can contain green, gray, violet or near-black influence. Identify the undertone you want before comparing darkness. If a sample unexpectedly looks teal, gray or black, that is information about its undertone and your lighting, not necessarily a defective product.
Ignoring the ceiling
Gentleman’s Gray demonstrates that a ceiling can read closer to black than the walls. When painting more than one plane, test each surface and observe the junction with trim. A color that feels balanced vertically may become too heavy overhead.
Evaluating only at midday
Dark pigment changes character as daylight falls and artificial lighting takes over. A navy that looks calm at noon may appear nearly black after sunset. Keep the sample visible through the hours in which the room is occupied.
Treating a designer quote as a guarantee
The cited designers describe Hague Blue as rich and cocooning and explain how Gentleman’s Gray shifts with light. Those are informed observations, not promises that every room will reproduce the same effect. Room orientation, surrounding colors, surface and finish remain decisive.

A practical decision framework
- Start with the mood. Choose calm and adaptable for Hale Navy, dramatic and green-leaning for Hague Blue, light-sensitive blue-green depth for Gentleman’s Gray, classic grounding for Naval, bold accent color for Salty Dog, midnight darkness for Anchors Aweigh or slate-gray restraint for Rainstorm.
- Remove unsuitable undertones. If green would fight your materials, set Hague Blue aside; if gray would dull the room, do not begin with Rainstorm. If near-black is unacceptable, test a lighter-looking alternative before Anchors Aweigh.
- Match coverage to the room. Use a full-room sample for an enveloping treatment, a wall or cabinet sample for an accent, and separate ceiling testing whenever the plan includes overhead color.
- Confirm with physical samples. Compare finalists in the actual light at different times of day. The winner is the shade that produces the intended mood with your fixed finishes, not the one that looks best in a catalog image.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The shortlist is based on manufacturer descriptions and designer-attributed coverage, including interviews with Hannah Yeo of Benjamin Moore, Corinne Mathern, Keren Richter of White Arrow, Henry Cheung of Bestor Architecture and Marie Flanigan, plus Sherwin-Williams’ historical Naval feature. It supports useful distinctions in undertone, mood and application, not a representative survey of designers.
The only named numeric specification in the cited material is Hale Navy’s LRV of 8.36 on Benjamin Moore’s current product page, accessed October 13, 2026. No current retail prices, stock levels or affiliate availability are established, and the 2020 Color of the Year label for Naval should not be read as a current trend statistic.
Bottom line: pick the navy that fits your light
Test Hale Navy first if you need one versatile candidate. Move to Hague Blue for a richer, slightly green and cocooning statement; Gentleman’s Gray for blue-green depth that changes markedly across surfaces; Naval for a classic navy with a documented Sherwin-Williams identity; Salty Dog for a bold accent; Anchors Aweigh for midnight darkness; or Rainstorm for slate-gray influence. Physical samples viewed through your room’s entire day are the deciding test.
