The best orange paint depends on the effect you want, the amount of wall area you will cover, and the light in the room. The 12 designer selections below range from brilliant, high-impact orange to muted cinnamon and brown-based shades. Use the vivid colors as deliberate accents when you want energy, and reserve the earthier options for broader walls when you want warmth without visual glare.

These are subjective recommendations published by Architectural Digest on September 6, 2023, based on comments from 11 designers. They are not a ranking, laboratory test, or standardized comparison. Paint formulas, finishes, and availability can change, so treat the names as a starting list and test a real sample in your room before committing.

Vivid oranges for an immediate lift

Electric Orange by Benjamin Moore

Sarah Jefferys calls Electric Orange “happy, energetic, bursting, brilliant.” Her recommendation is not to cover every surface automatically, but to use a pop of the color to change the emotional temperature of a cold, minimal interior. A painted niche, the inside of a bookcase, a single door, or a compact piece of cabinetry gives the eye a clear focal point while the surrounding neutral surfaces keep the room legible.

Tawny Day Lily by Benjamin Moore

Jenna Gross recommends Tawny Day Lily when you want drama without allowing the color to dominate an entire room. She specifically advises starting small because the orange is strong: try trim, doors, mirrors, or cabinetry. Those locations create a crisp boundary around the color and make it easier to repaint if the effect is more forceful than expected. Gross also identifies it as a counterpoint to greens and blues, so it can work where those cooler hues already appear in upholstery, tile, or artwork.

Orange by Benjamin Moore

Kathryn M. Ireland makes the case for using straightforward orange in overlooked utility spaces. She recalls using it in a Santa Barbara compound with folk art and points out that painting a small room costs no more than painting it white. A laundry room, mudroom, or compact powder room can therefore carry a color that might feel demanding in a large open-plan area. In a tight footprint, repeat one or two accessories or artworks so the saturated wall feels intentional rather than accidental.

Invigorate by Sherwin-Williams

Christa O’Leary connects orange with warmth and social activity, but her central advice is to select the shade according to the room’s purpose. “Choose the shade that aligns with your goals and intentions for your space and your life,” she says. For Invigorate, that means considering rooms where people gather, talk, cook, or entertain. If the space already has strong pattern, use the paint on one wall or on built-ins; if furnishings are restrained, a larger painted area can supply the energy.

Windswept Canyon by Sherwin-Williams

Lisa Shaffer describes Windswept Canyon as lively and warm and suggests that covering walls with it can make a room feel socially and artistically active. That is a design interpretation, not a measured psychological outcome. It is most suitable when you want the walls to participate in the room’s identity rather than serve as a quiet backdrop. Balance the intensity with natural materials, edited artwork, or a simple furniture plan so the wall color remains the main gesture.

Jalapeño by Sherwin-Williams

Jalapeño is the most explicitly all-in choice in the set. Lee Crowder says, “My heart just loves Jalapeño by Sherwin-Williams—but it’s definitely not for the faint of heart! You better love orange if you are using this one.” Read that as a practical warning: test it on a large movable board, view it from several parts of the room, and check it in both daylight and evening light before painting fixed surfaces. If you proceed, repeat the color sparingly in objects or textiles rather than adding several competing accent colors.

Earthier oranges for warmth and depth

Cayenne by Sherwin-Williams

Lauren M. Levine describes Cayenne as a fiery orange with red in it. She used it to warm a guest bedroom with large industrial metal-and-glass windows, a useful example of how a red bias can soften a room dominated by hard, cool materials. In a bedroom, place the color where it can be seen from the bed but avoid forcing every furnishing to match; charcoal, aged metal, and natural textiles can let the wall carry the warmth.

Harvest Moon by Benjamin Moore

Decorative artist Caroline Lizzaraga identifies an autumnal, spicy undertone in Harvest Moon and describes a layered wall treatment made with paint, wax, and pigment. That approach suits rooms where surface variation is part of the design, such as a dining room, studio, or entry. Lizzaraga also notes that blues pop against the orange backdrop. Use a measured amount of blue in art, ceramics, or upholstery so the contrast is deliberate instead of turning the room into a two-color theme.

Copper Harbor by Sherwin-Williams

Lorraine Enwright emphasizes that Copper Harbor changes character according to its neighbors. Soft neutrals and pastels can make it feel fresher, while deep surrounding colors push it toward a moodier reading. She pairs it with walnut, crystal, antiqued mirror, patinated brass or bronze, and copper, and names offices, kitchens, and dining rooms as promising locations. This makes it a useful bridge between modern and traditional materials: choose pale companions for an airier result or dark woods and aged metals when you want enveloping depth.

Rookwood Amber by Sherwin-Williams

Rachel Atkins treats Rookwood Amber as a warming accent rather than an instruction to recolor an entire home. Her suggested locations—reading nooks, sunlit corners, and kitchens—share a quality: they are defined areas where a concentrated color can create a destination. Paint the back wall of a nook, the end wall of a kitchen, or a small alcove, then keep adjacent surfaces quieter so the amber tone reads as a deliberate zone.

Audubon Russet by Benjamin Moore

Peter Spalding prefers oranges that contain brown when working in traditional interiors. His decision rule is purpose-driven: “Do you want to be warm and cozy? Or do you want to place something at the center of attention?” Audubon Russet can support either intention. Use it across walls when the room needs a cocooning foundation, or confine it to a fireplace wall, built-in, or ceiling detail when the goal is to direct attention to one architectural feature. Traditional millwork and layered fabrics can reinforce its grounded character.

Reynard by Sherwin-Williams

Lee Crowder describes Reynard as a muted cinnamon orange with an earthy, washed quality. Depending on its companions, it can feel rustic or fresh and modern. He suggests using it in a small space with warm whites and wood tones. That combination is especially forgiving in a compact hall, study, or powder room: the warm white prevents the orange from becoming dense, while wood supplies a natural transition between the wall and the rest of the scheme.

How to use orange without overwhelming the space

  1. Define the job of the color. Decide whether orange is an accent, a room-scale backdrop, or a way to highlight architecture. A strong shade used on trim or cabinetry has a different visual impact from the same shade on four walls.
  2. Start with a movable sample. Paint a large board or sample panel rather than judging a tiny chip. Move it around the room so you can see it beside flooring, upholstery, counters, and existing artwork.
  3. Check the room’s actual light. Observe the sample in morning, afternoon, and evening conditions, including the artificial lighting you normally use. The source article does not provide standardized measurements or controlled light tests, so your room is the relevant test environment.
  4. Choose the surrounding colors before buying gallons. Greens and blues can sharpen an orange contrast; warm whites, woods, and soft neutrals can calm it; deep colors and aged metals can make an earthy orange feel more enveloping. These pairings are design guidance, not guarantees of a particular visual result.
  5. Commit in stages. If the sample feels stronger than expected, move from four walls to one wall, a ceiling detail, built-ins, doors, or trim. This preserves the color idea while reducing the amount competing with furniture and daylight.
  6. Repeat selectively. Echo the chosen orange once or twice in a textile, artwork, ceramic, or metal finish. More repetitions are not automatically better; the goal is a coherent visual link, not a room filled with identical orange objects.

Pairing principles from the designers

  • Cool colors: Tawny Day Lily is suggested as a counterpoint to greens and blues, and Harvest Moon is described as a backdrop against which blues pop.
  • Warm neutrals and wood: Reynard is specifically paired with warm whites and wood tones. Similar materials can also keep a stronger orange from feeling disconnected from the architecture.
  • Traditional materials: Audubon Russet suits brown-grounded traditional interiors, while Copper Harbor is named with walnut, antiqued mirror, patinated brass or bronze, and copper.
  • Industrial materials: Cayenne was used to warm a guest room dominated by metal and glass, showing how a red-leaning orange can soften hard surfaces.
  • Minimal rooms: Electric Orange works as a small burst in a cold, minimal setting, where the contrast is intentional rather than spread uniformly.

What these recommendations do—and do not—establish

The selections come from a September 6, 2023 Architectural Digest feature by Danine Alati containing 12 picks from 11 designers. The comments are professional design opinions about mood, placement, and combinations. They do not establish a scientific effect of orange on behavior, a popularity ranking, a performance advantage, or a single objectively best color.

The source does not report standardized color coordinates, undertone measurements, sheen comparisons, coverage rates, current formulas, regional availability, or prices. Manufacturer names identify the products as presented in that feature; verify the exact color name, finish, and current availability with the manufacturer or a retailer before purchasing. A physical sample viewed in your own lighting is the prudent final check.

A practical buying checklist

  • Write down the exact manufacturer and color name; several orange names sound similar across paint lines.
  • Choose the finish separately from the color. The recommendations do not compare matte, eggshell, satin, or other sheens.
  • Buy or request a sample-size amount when available instead of committing to full-room quantities immediately.
  • Test over the existing wall color or use a properly primed board so the underlying surface does not distort your judgment.
  • Keep the sample label and batch information until the project is complete in case you need more paint.
  • Recheck availability and formulation at the time of purchase because the feature is dated September 2023 and does not verify current catalogs.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
