For custom-painted fishing lures, Createx Wicked Colors is a supported airbrush option for plastic, metal, and wood blanks, according to Iwata’s airbrush paint guide. A durable result also depends on preparing the lure, following the exact paint’s directions, and applying a compatible clearcoat. No available source establishes one paint as the most durable choice for every lure material and fishing condition.
Which paint works on fishing lures?
Choose paint for both the blank material and the way you plan to apply it. Iwata names Createx Wicked Colors for plastic, metal, and wood fishing lures, and notes that it can be thinned for detail work. That makes it a practical candidate for airbrushed custom patterns, not a guarantee that every product in the Createx range has the same formulation or directions.
For a specific product, check its current technical sheet for substrate compatibility, thinning, drying, and clearcoat guidance. If you are considering brush-applied acrylics or enamels for a simpler craft finish, the University of Missouri Extension’s Tackle Craft handout discusses both and notes that acrylics are easier to clean up. It does not compare how well those paints perform on fishing lures, so it is craft guidance rather than evidence that one paint type lasts longer.
How to choose paint for your design
- Blank material: Identify whether the lure is plastic, metal, wood, or another substrate, then confirm that the paint and any primer are specified for it.
- Application method: Airbrushing is useful for fine gradients, smooth transitions, and layered patterns. A simpler design does not require an airbrush; select a paint and application method that their manufacturers permit for the blank.
- Color and effect: Compare the product’s opacity, transparency, available colors, and effects against the design you want. Follow the manufacturer’s thinning directions rather than assuming a universal reducer or ratio.
- Finish system: Check the paint’s clearcoat recommendations before choosing a protective topcoat. Compatibility matters across the blank, primer, paint, and clear.
- Handling and cure: Compare cleanup and drying or curing instructions, and allow the full stated cure before fishing the lure.
The available guidance supports selection by compatibility and intended use; it does not provide a controlled performance or price ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- FLUORESCENT NEON COLORS UNDER LIGHT: Bright neon colors appear vibrant under daylight and UV light, creating eye-catching artwork with a glowing fluorescent effect
- GLOWS AFTER LIGHT CHARGING: This paint stores light energy and glows in darkness after exposure to sunlight, daylight or UV light
- HOW TO ACHIEVE THE BEST GLOW: Apply a thicker layer and allow it to fully dry. Charge the artwork under strong light for 5-20 minutes before viewing in darkness
- PERFECT FOR CREATIVE DIY PROJECTS: Great for canvas painting, rock art, wood crafts, Halloween decorations and more
- IMPORTANT GLOW INFORMATION: This is an energy-storing glow paint. It does not create light by itself and requires external light exposure before glowing
Why the clearcoat matters
Paint choice alone does not determine how well a finished lure holds up. The 2024 Createx Airbrush Colors Technical Data Sheet instructs users to let the colors dry thoroughly before clearcoating. For fishing lures and other marine applications, it recommends epoxy clear. Its separate recommendation of catalyzed 2K urethane is for exterior and automotive paintjobs, not a recommendation to transfer to lure finishing.
Use the directions for the exact paint and clearcoat you have, including requirements for mixing, ventilation, application, and cure time. A manufacturer recommendation is not an independent comparative test, so it does not establish that a finish will withstand every fish’s teeth, impacts with rocks, or indefinite immersion.

A practical lure-painting workflow
- Identify the blank. Confirm its material and check the blank and coating manufacturers’ instructions for suitable paint and primer.
- Prepare the surface. Remove contamination and prepare the blank as directed. Use a compatible primer if the product instructions call for one.
- Apply the design in controlled layers. Use an airbrush when you want detailed gradients or transitions. Use the paint maker’s specified reducer and thinning guidance for that exact paint.
- Let the paint dry. Follow the product’s stated drying conditions and timing before applying clear; for Createx Airbrush Colors, the technical sheet says to let colors dry thoroughly.
- Clearcoat and cure. Select a clear compatible with the full coating system. For Createx Airbrush Colors on fishing lures, Createx recommends epoxy clear. Apply it and allow the full cure specified by its manufacturer before fishing.
- Test unfamiliar combinations. If you change paint brands, substrates, primer, clear, or technique, first test the complete system on a sample. Createx advises test panels when trying a new paint, clear, primer, or technique.
What is established—and what is not
Iwata provides a supported airbrush-paint option for plastic, metal, and wood lures; Createx gives drying and clearcoat guidance for its Airbrush Colors; and the University of Missouri Extension handout offers general craft advice on acrylics and enamels. These sources do not establish a universally most durable paint, a winner from controlled lure-fishing tests, or a guarantee of performance under a particular angler’s conditions. Treat compatibility and manufacturer instructions as the basis for choosing a system, and test the finished combination when it is new to you.
