For decorative glass artwork, use paint made specifically for glass and follow the directions for that exact product. Pébéo Vitrea 160 is a water-based option with transparent glossy and other finishes; it must be degreased, dried for 24 hours, and oven-cured. DecoArt’s Glass Paint is described as an opaque satin line, with different, product-specific use directions. Neither maker’s instructions should be treated as universal rules for other paints.

What paint can you use on glass?
Choose a paint whose label identifies glass as an intended surface. Glass-specific formulas are the most direct choice for decorative artwork because their makers provide instructions for preparing and finishing glass. The appropriate product depends on the look you want, the object’s intended use, and the maker’s curing and care requirements.
For example, Pébéo Vitrea 160 is a water-based glass paint offered in transparent glossy and other effects. Pébéo also offers a six-color starter set. DecoArt’s 2023 product catalog describes its Glass Paint line as opaque with a satin finish, for glass and glazed ceramics.

How should you choose a glass paint?
Compare the finish and intended surface, then check the product’s drying, curing, washing, and use directions. The two documented options differ in appearance and guidance:

How to prepare and cure Pébéo Vitrea 160
- Degrease the glass. Pébéo recommends alcohol or soapy water. Let the surface dry before painting.
- Let the paint dry completely. Pébéo’s Vitrea 160 FAQ specifies 24 hours before firing. If the paint film is still wet, water may boil during firing and cause bubbles or blisters.
- Use the stated oven process. Place the decorated object in a cold oven, bring it to 160°C, and bake for 40 minutes. Leave it in the oven to cool; gradual heating and cooling help limit thermal shock.
- Do not dilute Vitrea 160 with water. Pébéo says dilution can reduce washfastness. Its FAQ guidance also identifies poor degreasing and incorrect time or temperature as causes of poor dishwasher performance.
Pébéo says cured decorations are dishwasher-safe when its recommendations are followed. That claim depends on the product and process; it is not a general guarantee for painted glass or for other paint lines.

Does glass paint need to be baked?
Not every glass paint has the same curing requirements. Vitrea 160’s directions call for oven curing after a 24-hour drying period. DecoArt’s catalog says its Glass Paint can be baked for a dishwasher-safe finish, but a separate DecoArt Festive Holiday Glass Painting project guide gives instructions for that project: wipe glass with rubbing alcohol and let it dry, wait at least 72 hours before use, or use the guide’s optional bake of 275°F for 30 minutes. For that bake, put the glass in a cold oven, heat it to 275°F, bake for 30 minutes, turn off the oven, and let the item cool inside.

Those DecoArt directions are project-specific, not a universal process for every DecoArt paint or glass object. Check the current product packaging before baking; use a curing method only when the instructions for your paint call for it.
Can you use ordinary acrylic paint on glass?
The manufacturer guidance covered here supports using products formulated for glass; it does not establish that ordinary acrylic paint will adhere or last as well. If you want a durable decorative finish, choose a glass paint and follow its own surface-preparation and curing instructions rather than assuming a general-purpose acrylic is equivalent.

Can painted glass be used for food?
Follow the specific product’s food-contact guidance. Pébéo says to decorate only surfaces not intended to contact food and says decorated objects should not come into contact with food. Do not treat its note about leaving roughly 1 cm near a glass rim as broad food-contact approval.
