Best Pocket Hole Jig: Choosing the Right Portable or Benchtop Model

The best pocket-hole jig depends on how you work: the 520PRO favors portable, repositionable drilling, while the 720PRO is built around repeatable benchtop production. Compare settings, clamps, supports, bundle contents, and accessories before buying.

There is no single best pocket-hole jig for every woodworker. Choose a repositionable model such as the Kreg 520PRO when you move around large or awkward panels. Choose the Kreg 720PRO when most work happens at a bench and you want built-in support, repeatable stops, and a dedicated clamp. The 720 base model and older K4 remain alternatives, but their current bundle contents and availability must be checked on the exact listing.

Quick answer: which pocket-hole jig should you buy?

Your workflow matters more than a feature-count contest. The 520PRO is the better fit for portable work because its body can be repositioned on the workpiece and its handle operates an integrated pump-action clamp. The 720PRO is the better fit for repeatable bench work because its package includes a Docking Station, support wings, a repeatable stop, and a jig clamp. Those are manufacturer-described use cases, not results from an independent accuracy, strength, or durability test.

A listed price of $99.99 appeared for the 520PRO when the product page was crawled in October 2026. Price, inventory, and package contents can change, so treat that figure as a time-specific listing rather than a standing price.

What a pocket-hole jig does

A pocket-hole jig holds a board at a controlled angle while a stepped drill bit creates a recessed hole. A pocket-hole screw then draws that board against a mating piece. The pocket hides the screw head and allows many frame, cabinet, face-frame, and furniture joints to be assembled without visible fasteners on the outside face.

#1 Best Overall

The jig does not determine whether a joint is appropriate for a particular load. Board species, grain direction, screw length, glue, joint geometry, edge distance, and clamping technique still matter. Use the screw selector and instructions supplied for the exact jig and material rather than treating a manufacturer’s general screw description as a guarantee for every application.

520PRO: the portable choice

Features that matter in the shop

Kreg describes the 520PRO as a portable jig with a 360-degree rotating handle and an integrated pump-action VersaGrip clamp. You can place the jig on a large or awkward board, clamp it, drill, and then move it to the next location without carrying the board back to a fixed station. The body includes an anti-slip surface, hardened-steel drill guides, and a steel-reinforced spine. Kreg lists a lifetime warranty for the drill guides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 520PRO page lists material settings for 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, and 1 1/2-inch stock. Set the jig and drill-bit stop for the actual thickness of the board; do not assume that a nearby nominal size will produce the same hole depth.

What the listed package contains

The 520PRO package page lists a stepped drill bit, driver bit, stop collar, thickness gauge, and 60 pocket-hole screws. A jig clamp or Docking Station is not part of that listed package; each is an add-on. If you want a permanent station, include the accessory cost and bench space in your decision rather than assuming the portable bundle already provides it.

Where it is strongest

  • Repair or installation work where the board cannot be brought to a bench.
  • Projects that mix several thicknesses and require moving the jig frequently.
  • Small shops where a full station would consume valuable surface area.
  • Users who want one jig that can later be mounted with a separately sold clamp or Docking Station.

The trade-off is that a portable jig requires you to position each hole location and support long stock yourself. For repeated cabinet production, a dedicated bench setup can reduce handling even if both jigs use the same basic pocket-hole method.

720 and 720PRO: the benchtop-oriented setup

What the 720 mechanism changes

Kreg describes the 720 as an automatic, one-motion-clamping jig. Its automatic setting is described for material from 1/2 inch through 1 1/2 inches. The comparison information also identifies a vacuum connection for dust collection. Those features target repeatable bench work, where you want to place a board, clamp it quickly, drill, and clear chips without repeatedly adjusting a conventional clamp.

What the 720PRO adds

The 720PRO product page lists a Docking Station with material-support wings and a repeatable stop, a Pocket-Hole Jig Clamp, 160 pocket-hole screws, and a project plan. The wings support longer pieces on either side of the jig; the stop helps you place successive boards at the same location. This is useful when drilling a run of cabinet rails, face-frame parts, or identical stretchers.

Because the 720PRO is sold as a setup rather than only a bare jig, compare the complete package with the price of a base 720 plus the accessories you would otherwise add. Confirm the live listing before purchase: bundle contents, screw sizes, and included supports can change between editions or retailers.

When the 720PRO is worth the larger setup

  • You drill many similar parts in one session.
  • You routinely work with long boards that need side support.
  • A repeatable stop is more valuable to you than the ability to carry the jig around the project.
  • You want dust extraction connected at the drilling station.

The 720PRO is not automatically stronger, more accurate, or better value simply because it is the premium package. The available manufacturer descriptions establish included features, not comparative performance results.

Where the K4 and base 720 fit

The K4 appears in the same buying conversation because some woodworkers prefer its established format or find a discounted kit. The available product information does not establish a current, complete K4 specification or a universal bundle, so compare the exact listing’s clamp, material supports, drill and driver bits, screw count, and setup instructions with the newer models.

The base 720 can make sense when you already own compatible supports or a clamp, or when you want to build the station in stages. It is not equivalent to the 720PRO package unless the Docking Station, wings, stop, clamp, screws, and project plan are actually included. Read the contents panel for the precise model number and edition.

Choose by workflow, not by the word “best”

Choose the 520PRO when mobility is the constraint

Select the 520PRO if the workpiece is too large, installed, or awkward to bring to a bench. The rotating handle lets you orient the clamp around the board, while the integrated pump-action mechanism avoids carrying a separate bench clamp. It is also the simpler choice when your projects are occasional and you do not want a permanent station.

Choose the 720PRO when repeatability is the constraint

Select the 720PRO if the same operation will be repeated dozens of times. Its support wings and repeatable stop address board handling, while the included clamp and screws reduce the number of separate purchases needed to start. Its footprint and station components are less convenient if you normally work at the installation site.

Choose a staged setup when your needs will grow

A 520PRO can be converted to a benchtop jig with a separately sold jig clamp or Docking Station. That path lets you begin with portability and add support later. Before buying the accessory, verify compatibility with the exact 520PRO version and check whether the accessory duplicates a clamp or station you already own.

Material thickness: the setting that controls the joint

Pocket-hole geometry depends on board thickness. The 520PRO lists discrete settings of 1/2, 3/4, and 1 1/2 inches. The 720’s automatic range is described as 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches. Measure the actual board, including any surfacing or planing that changed its thickness, and use the closest supported setting only as directed by the manual.

  • 1/2-inch stock: use the 1/2-inch setting and the screw length specified for that thickness.
  • 3/4-inch stock: use the 3/4-inch setting on the 520PRO; confirm the 720’s automatic clamp has registered the board correctly.
  • 1 1/2-inch stock: use the 1 1/2-inch setting or automatic range as applicable, and verify that the screw will not break through the mating face.

If your material falls outside the stated range, stop and consult the model’s manual. Do not improvise a setting by moving the stop collar or relying on a longer screw; either can leave a weak joint or a visible breakout.

How to drill and assemble a pocket-hole joint

  1. Measure the actual stock. Use calipers or a reliable rule at several points if the board has been surfaced. Record the thickness before setting the jig.
  2. Set the jig. On the 520PRO, select the 1/2-, 3/4-, or 1 1/2-inch position. On a 720, let the automatic mechanism register the board within its stated 1/2- to 1 1/2-inch range.
  3. Set the drill-bit stop collar. Place the collar using the supplied thickness gauge and tighten it securely. The collar controls depth; the jig setting alone does not.
  4. Mark hole positions. Keep holes far enough from the board end and edge for the screw head and material width. For wide rails, distribute holes so the joint pulls evenly rather than concentrating force in one spot.
  5. Clamp the jig or workpiece. Use the 520PRO’s integrated pump-action clamp, the 720’s one-motion clamp, or the listed compatible clamp for a mounted station. The board must sit flat against the reference surfaces.
  6. Drill at full speed with controlled pressure. Let the stepped bit cut without forcing it. Withdraw periodically if chips accumulate, especially when dust extraction is not connected.
  7. Check the pocket. The screw head should seat in the flat recess, and the pilot section should exit on the mating face without splitting the edge. If the hole is too deep or shallow, reset the collar before drilling the next part.
  8. Apply glue when the joint design calls for it. Pocket screws provide clamping; they do not replace glue where the project plans specify a glued joint.
  9. Align and clamp the assembly. Use a face clamp or another method that prevents the boards from sliding as the screw enters. Check square before driving the first screw.
  10. Drive the specified screw. Use the supplied driver bit and the screw length recommended for the measured thickness and material. Stop when the head seats; excessive torque can strip the recess or pull the screw through.

Use the screw selector rather than guessing

The manufacturer’s FAQ describes a self-tapping tip on its pocket-hole screws and provides compatibility guidance. Follow the screw selector and the instructions for the actual jig, wood thickness, and application. A self-tapping tip does not make every screw interchangeable across materials, coatings, lengths, or joint designs.

Optional purchases such as a compatible clamp, Docking Station, extra screws, plugs, or drill accessories are worthwhile only when they remove a real bottleneck. If you drill a few joints per month, a station may add expense without saving meaningful setup time. If you drill repeated parts every week, the station and supports can pay back in fewer repositioning steps.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

The screw breaks through the face

Likely causes are an incorrect thickness setting, a stop collar set too deep, or a screw that is too long for the stock. Stop drilling, measure the board again, reset the collar with the thickness gauge, and select the specified screw length.

The joint slips while tightening

Pocket screws can pull one board sideways before the threads bite. Clamp the joint across the faces, confirm both boards are seated against the reference surfaces, and drive the screw at controlled speed. A repeatable stop helps locate holes consistently but does not replace assembly clamping.

The pocket tears out or looks ragged

Excessive feed pressure, a dull or damaged bit, unsupported stock, or chip buildup can damage the recess. Let the bit cut at its normal speed, clear chips, support the board, and replace the bit if its cutting edges are worn.

Holes do not line up from part to part

Check that every board uses the same measured thickness and jig setting. On a portable 520PRO, mark a reference edge and place the jig against that edge each time. On a 720PRO station, set the repeatable stop and keep the board face oriented consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The jig will not clamp securely

Dust or a rounded edge can prevent the workpiece from sitting flat. Clean the contact surfaces, square the board end, and verify that the clamp is adjusted for the material range. Never drill while the jig can rock or slide.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The manufacturer pages establish design intent, stated material ranges, listed accessories, and package quantities. They do not establish that one model produces stronger joints, tighter holes, longer service life, or better value than another under controlled conditions. No independent comparative test result or long-term owner dataset is available here.

For that reason, treat “premium,” “faster,” or similar wording on a product page as marketing language. The practical decision is whether the listed clamp, support, dust connection, portability, and included supplies match your work. If accuracy is critical, make a sample joint in the same stock and with the same screw before committing to a production run.

Buying checklist

  • Identify whether your work is primarily portable, benchtop, or split between both.
  • Measure the stock thicknesses you actually use and confirm they fall within the selected model’s stated range.
  • Compare the exact bundle contents: drill bit, driver bit, stop collar, gauge, clamp, station, supports, screws, and project plan.
  • Price required accessories, not just the bare jig.
  • Confirm compatibility before adding a clamp or Docking Station to a 520PRO or base 720.
  • Check the live listing for current price, inventory, model number, and screw count.
  • Plan dust collection and bench space if you choose a 720-based station.
  • Use the model’s manual and screw selector for each material and joint.

Verdict

Buy the 520PRO when the jig must travel to the workpiece or be repositioned around large panels. Buy the 720PRO when repeated bench drilling, long-stock support, and a ready-made station matter more than portability. Consider the base 720 or K4 only after verifying the exact current bundle and adding the cost of any missing clamp, supports, bits, or screws. These are workflow-based recommendations from the manufacturers’ specifications—not a claim that any one pocket-hole jig is universally strongest or most accurate.
