For most watercolor detail work, start with a size 0 or 1 rigger. Choose the Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour Sable Rigger if you want natural-hair paint capacity and point retention; choose the Professional Watercolour Synthetic Rigger for a sable-like alternative with synthetic fibres; choose the Cotman Series 333 for a lower-cost watercolor option; and choose Trekell’s Golden Taklon Script/Rigger Complete Set when you need one set for watercolor, oil, acrylic, lettering and long continuous marks.
There is no independently tested universal winner. The right rigger depends on the line length, paint viscosity, medium, hair preference and size range you need.
What a rigger brush is best at
A rigger is a very thin, long round brush with a fine pointed tip. Winsor & Newton describes the shape as being for “extra thin lines, detail work & lettering.” The long hairs hold more paint than many very short detail brushes, so you can draw a longer continuous stroke before reloading.

How to choose the right rigger size
Brush numbers are not a universal physical standard. A size 0 from one manufacturer may not match a size 0 from another, so compare the maker’s stated range and the actual point rather than relying on the number alone.
Rank #2
- BRUSH TYPE: Rigger brush is also called a liner or script brush.
- SIZE: 6 different sizes are included in this set. #000 #00 #0 #1 #2 #3.
- APPLICATION: They are designed for making fine, smooth, hassle free long lines.
- MATERIALS: The brush head is made from high elastic nylon fibers.
- PAINT TYPE: Oil Acrylic Watercolor.
For the finest marks
Begin with size 0 or 1 when that size is offered. These are sensible starting points for hairlines, tiny lettering and narrow branches, but the mark still depends on pressure, paint dilution and the surface.
For longer, more fluid lines
Move to a larger size when you need a greater paint load or a stronger line. The additional hair can let you complete a long stroke with fewer interruptions, while a very small brush may run out of paint sooner.

Test before committing
Load the brush with the same paint at the same dilution you plan to use, then test it on the actual paper, panel or other surface. More viscous paint usually produces a wider, slower line; more diluted paint flows farther but can become less controllable. These tests are more informative than the size number by itself.
Sable versus synthetic riggers
Natural sable
Sable is the premium natural-hair choice in the Winsor & Newton Professional range. Its appeal is the combination of a fine point, spring and paint-holding capacity. Select it when those handling qualities matter more than avoiding animal hair.

Synthetic fibre
Synthetic riggers offer an animal-hair alternative. Winsor & Newton positions its Professional Synthetic Rigger as a sable-like performer, while the Cotman 333 uses mixed fibre thicknesses to increase strength, spring and color carrying. Synthetic is also the practical direction for painters who prioritize a non-animal material.
Neither category guarantees a better result in every hand. Compare the individual brush’s point, snap, capacity and cleaning response, and judge the line it produces with your paint.

Rigger versus a short detail round
Choose a rigger when you need a long, uninterrupted line and enough paint in the hairs to sustain it. Choose a short round or dedicated detail brush when you need very small, tightly controlled marks and are willing to reload more often. A rigger’s long hair is its advantage for continuous strokes; that same length can feel less precise for tiny dabs.
Selection checklist
- Medium: Confirm that the brush is intended for watercolor, oil, acrylic or the combination you use.
- Hair: Decide between natural sable and synthetic fibre.
- Point and spring: Look for a tip that returns to shape and does not split during a test stroke.
- Paint capacity: Choose a longer or larger rigger when uninterrupted lines matter.
- Size range: Check the manufacturer’s actual sizes; numbering is not standardized.
- Handle: Compare handle length and balance with the way you letter or draw.
- Value: Compare the brush or set on the features you will use, not on an assumed universal ranking.
A practical buying decision
- Watercolor specialist: Pick the Professional Sable Rigger for natural hair, or the Professional Synthetic Rigger for a synthetic alternative with a broader 0–6 range.
- Occasional watercolor detail: Pick the Cotman Series 333 when sizes 0–3 cover your work and you want a budget-oriented synthetic option.
- Lettering across media: Pick the Trekell Golden Taklon Script/Rigger Complete Set when your projects span watercolor, oil and acrylic.
- Uncertain size: Start with a 0 or 1, test the line with your actual paint and surface, then add a larger size if the first brush lacks capacity or line strength.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The cited maker listings describe intended uses and available sizes, not controlled head-to-head performance. No independent comparative scores or laboratory figures establish one rigger as universally best. Treat the shortlist as a set of use-case matches, then verify the point and flow in your own paint.
