The best sewing ruler depends on what you need to measure or cut: choose a long rectangular quilting ruler for fabric strips and borders, a square ruler for trimming blocks, a compact ruler for checking seams beside the machine, or a fine-marked ruler for garment details. No single size is ideal for all four jobs.

The CGR24 is a long rectangular ruler designed for cutting strips and borders. Creative Grids lists a non-slip grip, 1/8- and 1/4-inch grids, dashed 1/4-inch seam lines, and 45- and 30/60-degree angle lines on its product page. Its length suits longer cuts, but it also takes more table space and is less convenient to store than a compact ruler.
The maker describes it as a tool that can cut strips and borders “right off the bolt.” That is a statement of intended use, not an independent performance test. A non-slip grip can help limit shifting, but it does not replace a rotary-cutting mat or careful hand placement.

Choose a square whose dimensions accommodate the blocks you actually make. A large square can cover more fabric in one alignment, but it occupies more workspace and storage than a small ruler.
Best compact ruler for seam checks

What to check before buying
- Size: Match the ruler’s length and width to the strips, borders, or blocks you work with. Long rulers need a larger cutting and storage area.
- Markings: Look for the increments your work needs: 1/8- or 1/4-inch grids for quilting, 1/16-inch marks for finer garment placement, or metric scales if you use them.
- Seam and angle lines: Seam-allowance markings and diagonal guides can reduce repeated measuring when your projects call for them.
- Visibility: Contrasting lines are easier to see against fabric than lines that blend into its color or pattern.
- Grip and safety: Non-slip backing or grip can help keep a ruler from moving. Use it on a rotary-cutting mat, maintain steady control, and keep fingers clear of the blade.

Which ruler should you buy first?
If rotary-cutting long fabric strips is your main task, start with a long rectangular ruler such as the CGR24. If you mostly trim quilt blocks, choose a square sized for your blocks. Garment makers focused on placement details will get more use from fine 1/16-inch and metric markings, while a compact ruler is handy for seam checks at the machine. Add another format only when a recurring task calls for it.
