If you want to use alcohol markers on both sides of a page, start with a marker-specific, double-sided pad; if smooth blending matters more, choose paper for its surface behavior rather than its weight. No sketchbook can be assumed to prevent bleed-through for every marker, pressure, and number of layers. The clearest product guidance here concerns alcohol markers, so these recommendations are for that medium.

What to look for in a marker sketchbook
Alcohol marker ink can pass through a sheet and stain the page beneath it. A backing sheet can protect lower pages, but it does not stop ink from passing through the page you are drawing on. With conventional paper, place a scrap sheet or marker guard underneath the active page.

Choose by the qualities that affect how you work, not by weight alone. Copic notes that paper types differ in finish and drawing feel, and recommends trying varieties to find a suitable one (Copic support). Consider:

- Blending and gradations: Some papers give ink more time or opportunity to blend; those same papers may allow more bleed-through.
- Color appearance: Paper tone can affect how marker colors look on the page.
- Drying and blender response: Drying time and the effect of colorless blender can vary by paper.
- Format: Spiral binding, easy-tear pages, and size options matter if you want to remove or display finished work. Confirm available sizes and stock for your region on the product page.

Those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not an independent guarantee for every marker or technique. Customer reviews include reports of successful double-sided use, alongside complaints about colorless-blender effects, paper tone, and drying time. Treat those reports as anecdotal: your markers, layers, and working pace may produce different results.

Copic Paper Selections
Copic’s range illustrates the trade-off between resisting bleed and blending. Its official descriptions call Premium Bond Paper slightly off-white and bleed-proof, and describe Custom Paper as very white, suited to vibrant color, and non-bleeding. By contrast, Copic says Thick Marker Paper and Soft Watercolor Paper bleed more readily but make gradations and blending easier. How to make the final choice
- Set your main priority. Choose double-sided use if you want to work on both faces; choose a blending-oriented surface if gradients matter more than minimizing bleed.
- Test with your own materials. Make a small swatch using the markers, pressure, and layering you normally use. Check the reverse side, color appearance, drying, and colorless-blender response.
- Protect pages below when needed. Put a spare sheet beneath the active page if you are using paper that may bleed through. This protects lower pages, not the drawing sheet itself.
- Check practical details before ordering. Verify the available size, binding, stock, and regional listing, since availability and product details can vary.
