The most compelling skull paintings do more than depict death: they make mortality visible through the objects, light, and spaces around the skull. This selection brings together Dutch vanitas still lifes and Paul Cézanne’s later skull paintings, chosen for their historical significance, distinctive composition, and contrasting ways of treating the subject. “Best” is an editorial judgment, not a definitive museum ranking.

What a skull means in a painting

A skull often serves as a memento mori—a reminder of mortality. The National Gallery, London identifies skulls in Northern European portraits and still lifes, as well as in Southern European depictions of saints, as among the clearest expressions of the theme: National Gallery, London on memento mori.

In a vanitas still life, the skull is read alongside other objects rather than as an isolated emblem. A snuffed candle, watch, books, flowers, or a bubble can suggest time passing, knowledge and worldly pursuits, beauty that fades, or life’s brevity. Their precise meaning depends on the painting; the objects do not function as a single fixed code.

Notable skull paintings, compared

These works are selected for their place in the vanitas tradition, the different roles assigned to the skull, and the ways their compositions bring mortality into view. Museum records provide the historical grounding; the comparisons below are an editorial guide, not a ranked consensus.

How the Dutch vanitas paintings make mortality present

Jacques de Gheyn II: the skull among fleeting forms

In de Gheyn’s Vanitas Still Life, the skull shares attention with a bubble, cut flowers, and a smoking urn. The Met describes these elements as reminders of life’s brevity and identifies the painting as generally considered the earliest known independent still life on a vanitas subject. Rather than relying on the skull alone, the image sets it among other things that appear temporary or in the process of disappearing: The Met’s entry for Jacques de Gheyn II’s Vanitas Still Life.

Pieter Claesz: a still life that addresses the viewer

Claesz’s Vanitas Still Life combines a skull with a snuffed-out candle, an empty glass, and a watch. Together, the objects turn the theme of mortality into a meditation on time and what remains after use or enjoyment. The Mauritshuis presents the work under the direct reminder “Memento mori – remember you must die”: Mauritshuis collection entry.

In Claesz’s Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill, the objects sit on a pitted stone ledge. The Met points to the ledge’s spatial effect: it brings the painted arrangement close to the viewer’s own space. That device makes the still life feel less like a remote collection of symbols and more like an arrangement set just within reach: The Met’s entry for Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill.

Van Daellen: light as an interpretive possibility

Van Daellen’s Vanitas Still Life, dated around 1650, places a skull among books, papers, and an extinguished candle, with an open window and incoming light shaping the scene. The National Gallery of Art suggests that the skull’s orientation toward the window and light may evoke eternal life. That reading is one possibility offered by the museum’s catalog, not a universal meaning to impose on every skull painting: National Gallery of Art entry for Vanitas Still Life.

Cézanne’s skull paintings: a later way of looking

Cézanne provides a useful contrast to the seventeenth-century Dutch examples. The Art Institute of Chicago publication places his skull paintings in relation to the vanitas tradition but notes that his interest went beyond formal properties. The subject therefore belongs both to an older meditation on mortality and to a later painter’s sustained engagement with the skull as something to observe and paint.

The same publication reports Cézanne telling the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, “a skull is a beautiful thing to paint.” The quotation is presented here as the publication reports it; the cited passage does not provide a fuller account of the conversation: Art Institute of Chicago on Cézanne and the skull.

How to choose a skull painting to spend time with

  • Look at the companions. A candle, watch, books, flowers, bubble, or bones changes how the skull participates in the composition.
  • Notice the viewpoint. A ledge that seems to extend into the viewer’s space creates a different encounter from a skull oriented toward a window.
  • Observe light and surface. Ask whether illumination emphasizes an object, opens a route beyond the scene, or makes the arrangement feel close and tangible.
  • Consider the period. A Dutch vanitas still life and a later work by Cézanne can share a subject without making the same kind of statement.
  • Separate evidence from interpretation. A museum record can establish a work’s title, date, or documented objects; an interpretation of what those objects mean may remain one plausible reading.
