For ordinary drywall, QuietCoat is the most directly documented coating candidate: PABCO Gypsum/QuietRock specifies wallboard use, several application methods, and a defined film thickness. It is not a substitute for a sound-isolation upgrade. Coatings may damp wall vibration or add some mass, but the wall assembly, gaps, and paths around the wall often matter more than the paint.
What soundproof paint can realistically do
“Soundproof paint” is an imprecise label. A coating can help damp vibration in a panel or add a limited amount of mass; that does not mean it will block all sound passing through a wall. Air leaks around doors, windows, outlets, and edges—and sound traveling through connected floors, ceilings, or adjoining walls—can undermine a coating’s effect.

First identify the problem. Airborne sound passes through or around a partition; structure-borne noise travels through building materials; impact noise comes from physical contact with a structure; and reverberation is sound reflecting within a room. A wall coating is not a universal fix for all four. If the goal is isolation between rooms, sealing leaks and improving the wall assembly may be necessary; options can include added mass, decoupling, or absorptive treatment, depending on the source and construction.
Sound-damping paint options compared
| Product | Intended use and application | Published thickness and coverage | Published performance or cure information |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuietCoat (PABCO Gypsum/QuietRock) | Acoustical coating for noise and vibration reduction; the most directly documented candidate here for wallboard. Apply by brush, roller, air gun, or airless sprayer. | 0.02 inch per coat, up to three coats (0.06 inch total); 40–80 ft² per gallon. Source: PABCO Gypsum/QuietRock product specifications. | Dries in under 20 minutes; continues curing for 14 days. The product description says full damping results are experienced once cured. Source: PABCO Gypsum/QuietRock. |
| Coat of Silence (VerteTek) | Paintable system positioned for ceilings, walls, plaster, and drywall; a two-step process involving separate base and finish components. | Specialist specifications describe two resilient base-coat layers followed by two mass-building finish-coat layers, with a target thickness of 25–35 mils. About 100 ft² per gallon at two coats for each component. Source: Acoustical Surfaces specification. | Acoustical Surfaces states a 3–7 point STC increase depending on construction and application. This is a conditional product-page claim, not a guaranteed increase for every wall. |
| ISONEM Anti Sound Paint | Water-based, single-component acrylic for interior and exterior use. | At 1 mm and 1 kHz, the technical data sheet reports up to 2.51 dB; at 2 mm and 1 kHz, up to 4.85 dB. Coverage is not stated in the cited technical data sheet. | Touch-free drying: 2 hours; through-dry: 72 hours. The reported decibel values are tied to the stated thickness, frequency, and TS 140-4 measurement description; they are not a general room-wide reduction figure. |
| Silent Running SR-500 | Specialist vibration-damping coating for industrial uses such as motors, turbines, compressors, brackets, sorting devices, chutes, ductwork, bridges, and tunnels—not a default choice for residential drywall. | Approximately 40 ft² per gallon at 0.035 inch dry thickness; approximately 73% solids. Source: Silent Running product information. | A residential wall-sound-reduction figure is not stated in the cited product information. |
The figures above come from different product specifications and test contexts. They are not a head-to-head laboratory comparison, so they cannot be used to rank the coatings by sound reduction.

- Acousti-Coat is a thick, soft coating designed to act as a 'sound sponge'. Deadens sound within the area / room the sound is created in. For sound coming from other areas, use our SC 1000. Use Acousti Coat and your neighbors hear you less. Use SC 1000 and you hear your neighbors less.
- Product is designed to reduce echo and uncomfortable high frequency sounds. Ideal for home theaters, offices, meeting rooms, churches, convention areas, concert halls, etc
- Coverage is 50 square feet per gallon for the minimum two coats required. This means unless you are applying to a small 50 square foot area, one gallon isn't enough.
- ThermaCels included in this paint! This provides insulation properties as well. Do not add additional ThermaCels additive to this product.
- White Flat Finish. Can be tinted using universal colorants, to light or medium shades. If a darker color is required it can be painted over but a very cheap flat interior paint must be used. Using a high quality paint will seal the surface of the 'sound sponge' and diminish results.
Which coating fits a typical wall?
QuietCoat: the clearest drywall starting point
Choose QuietCoat as the first coating to investigate if the surface is wallboard and you can apply the specified number and thickness of coats. Its wallboard specification, application options, coverage range, and curing information make the intended use and installation requirements comparatively clear. The manufacturer’s statement about full damping after curing does not quantify how much quieter a particular room will become.
Coat of Silence: a multi-layer system
Coat of Silence is a more involved option than a single conventional paint coat. Its described sequence uses two resilient base coats and two mass-building finish coats. The stated STC change depends on wall construction and application, so do not assume the advertised 3–7 point increase will apply to an existing wall without matching conditions.

- Can be mixed into any kind of paint or coating. Does not change the properties of the paint it is added to.
- Reduces heat and cooling loss by providing insulation benefits.
- Lowers heating and cooling bills !
- One quart by volume of ceramics is added to one gallon of paint or coating.
- Product is sold in packages according to how much paint you will be using. A 1 gallon package will treat 1 gallon of paint, 12 gallon package will treat 12 gallons of paint, etc
ISONEM: use the test figures narrowly
ISONEM’s technical sheet gives figures at two specific coating thicknesses and at 1 kHz. Those values may help when evaluating that product’s cited test result, but they do not establish how much noise will be reduced across a room’s full range of frequencies or through a particular wall assembly.
Silent Running SR-500: specialist rather than residential
Its listed applications are industrial and structural vibration control. The stated application rate and dry thickness do not establish suitability or expected performance on ordinary painted drywall.

How to choose and apply a product
- Identify the sound path. Decide whether the issue is airborne sound through a partition, vibration carried by the structure, impact noise, or reverberation inside the room. A wall coating is most relevant to panel damping, not every type of noise problem.
- Inspect the assembly and the leaks. Note the wall substrate and construction, and check the edges, openings, and adjacent building elements. A coating claim cannot account for sound bypassing the wall through gaps or flanking paths.
- Compare installation demands. Check achievable dry-film thickness, number of coats, stated coverage, drying and curing time, and required equipment. Follow the product’s own application instructions; a coating applied thinner than specified should not be assumed to deliver the published result.
- Read test claims in context. Look for the thickness, frequency, assembly, and test standard. The ISONEM figures and Coat of Silence STC claim describe different contexts and are not directly comparable.
- Match the solution to your capacity. For wallboard, start with a wallboard-specified coating such as QuietCoat. Consider a multi-component system only if you can meet its material, labor, and application requirements.
- Decide whether paint is enough. If the goal is substantial isolation, assess whether sealing, added mass, decoupling, or absorptive treatment is needed rather than relying on a coating alone.
