For Precision Rifle Series (PRS) competition, a tripod is optional gear—not a required beginner purchase. The PRS New Competitor guide says it “Can assist with spotting or certain stage setups.” The best choice depends on whether you need to support a spotting optic, a bag, or a rifle, and on what the match director permits. The photography wording in the supplied title does not fit this subject: these are rifle-shooting support systems, not ordinary camera-tripod recommendations.
Do you need a tripod for PRS?
No. PRS describes its matches as long-range precision-rifle competitions across varied positions and terrain, and its New Competitor guide treats a tripod as optional. It can help with spotting or certain stage setups, but the guide also encourages newcomers to keep gear simple and notes that equipment choices are personal.

Whether it is useful depends on your match, stage strategy, and existing equipment. A tripod intended only to hold a spotting scope is a different purchase from one intended to support a rifle, and neither use is automatically allowed on every stage.
Check the rules before planning a stage setup
The 2025 PRS rulebook excludes a support tripod from rifle weigh-in weight, but limits tripod use to situations allowed by the Match Director and to that director’s deployment procedure. Rules and local match instructions can change; check the current rulebook and ask the Match Director how tripods may be used before building a stage plan around one.

Shortlist: tripods and systems to compare
These are candidates identified by specialist and outdoor gear coverage, not products tested for this article. Treat the recommendations as starting points, and verify the model, included head, and interface on the current product listing.
| Candidate | Why it is worth comparing | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Two Vets QDT V2 | A 2026 precision-rifle guide names it its all-round pick and discusses stability, field use, and versatility. | That is the guide’s recommendation, not a universal winner or independent test result for this article. |
| Really Right Stuff TFCT / SOAR systems | A premium option to investigate if heavy-duty stability is a priority. Outdoor Life reports testing the TFCT-24L and lists a 25.9-inch collapsed length, 68.9-inch maximum height, and bubble level. | Outdoor Life reports an MSRP of $1,470 for the TFCT-24L; prices and configurations can change, so verify current details. The measurements and price are publisher-reported, not our measurements. |
| Leofoto SO-series or a comparable rifle setup | Leofoto is relevant to rifle-focused tripod and ball-head systems. A 2026 specialist comparison places it in a value-oriented lane. | PRS named Leofoto its Affiliate Sponsor and Official Rifle Ball Head for the 2023 season. That is historical sponsorship, not evidence of a current partnership. Confirm current model names and the exact setup. |
| Tricer AD | A 2026 specialist guide presents it as a lightweight choice for hunters prioritizing packability. | Lower carry weight can involve a stability trade-off; it is not automatically the best fit for every PRS match or use. |
| BOG DeathGrip Carbon | A 2026 specialist guide includes it as a budget entry system. | Before choosing it for a stage, confirm the clamp works with your rifle and that the system suits the intended use. |
How to choose a PRS tripod system
Compare the complete setup, not just the legs. A tripod’s suitability depends on its head, clamp or bag, and the rifle or optic interface working together. Available coverage does not validate every combination.

- REVOLUTIONARY INVERTED TRIPOD DESIGN FOR LIGHTNING-FAST DEPLOYMENT : The FatBoy Elevate Two Section Precision Shooting Tripod features an innovative inverted leg system with three non-crossing extendable legs, allowing shooters and hunters to deploy instantly in the field. This unique design eliminates leg interference and provides rapid setup for precision shooting, long-range competitions, and hunting situations where speed matters.
- EXTREME STRENGTH WITH 150 LB LOAD CAPACITY : Built with premium carbon fiber and aerospace-grade aluminum, this tripod delivers unmatched durability while remaining lightweight. The 42.5mm tube diameter and oversized 49mm leg locks provide incredible rigidity and stability, supporting up to 150 lbs—making it one of the strongest and most reliable shooting tripods available.
- FIELD-READY HEIGHT RANGE FOR ANY SHOOTING POSITION : Designed for real-world shooting scenarios, the Elevate extends to 71.5 inches (legs not spread) and 66 inches spread, giving shooters the ability to comfortably shoot standing, kneeling, or seated. When collapsed, it measures 36.25 inches, making it easy to transport without sacrificing full-height capability in the field.
- MAXIMUM STABILITY ON ANY TERRAIN : Equipped with 47.5mm rubber feet with integrated .5" spikes, this tripod delivers exceptional grip on dirt, rock, mud, and uneven terrain. The locking leg adjustment tabs and wide stance footprint (up to 55") create a rock-solid shooting platform for long-range accuracy and recoil control.
- LIGHTWEIGHT PROFESSIONAL-GRADE HUNTING TRIPOD : Weighing just 5 lb 10 oz without the bowl (5 lb 14 oz with bowl), the Elevate balances portability with extreme durability. The tripod includes a premium tripod bag for transport, making it the perfect companion for long-range shooters, hunters, PRS competitors, and precision rifle enthusiasts.
- Decide what it will support. A spotting scope, a bag resting on top, and a rifle attached directly call for different interfaces. Identify the job before comparing models.
- Prioritize stability for the expected load. Consider leg rigidity and how the setup behaves on the terrain and at the height you expect to use. Lightweight portability and maximum stiffness may pull in different directions.
- Compare carry weight and packed size. A system that is easier to carry may be attractive when packability matters, but should still suit the stability demands of your intended use.
- Check usable height, not only maximum height. Published maximum height is one reference point; consider whether the tripod can be set comfortably for the positions you expect to use.
- Look at leg deployment and adjustment. Consider how quickly you can deploy the legs and adjust them on uneven ground.
- Verify every connection. Confirm the head, clamp or bag, and rifle rail or optic mounting arrangement are compatible as a complete system. Do not assume a tripod listing includes the interface you need.
- Confirm match procedures. The Match Director’s allowance and deployment rules determine whether your planned tripod use is permitted.
What the PRS and product sources establish
The PRS overview describes the competition context, while its 2025 rules establish the cited weigh-in and Match Director conditions. The PRS New Competitor guide is the source for the optional-gear advice.
Product judgments and specifications above come from secondary coverage: the 2026 specialist precision-rifle tripod comparison and Outdoor Life’s shooting-rest coverage. PRS’s Leofoto announcement concerns the 2023 season only. None of these sources establishes that every listed system will suit every rifle, optic, stage, or current match rule.
