The best watercolor palette depends on how you paint. For most beginners and casual travelers, the Winsor & Newton Cotman Palette Pocket Set is the easiest place to start. Artists who want to learn color mixing will get more from the six-color DANIEL SMITH Essentials set, while professional travelers should look at the DANIEL SMITH 12-color half-pan set. Urban sketchers may prefer the tiny, refillable QoR Mini; portrait painters have a focused option in the QoR Ali Cavanaugh Portrait Colors Set; and artists who prioritize broad color choice, granulation, or exceptionally rewettable tube paint should consider Schmincke HORADAM or M. Graham.
There is no single objectively best watercolor palette. The right choice turns on five things: paint grade, pan or tube format, color selection, portability, and the subjects or techniques you use most.
Best watercolor palettes at a glance
| Artist or use case | Top pick | Why it fits | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner on a budget | Winsor & Newton Cotman Palette Pocket Set | Compact case, mixing areas, travel brush, and a ready-to-use selection | Student-grade paint rather than a professional range |
| Beginner learning color theory | DANIEL SMITH Essentials Watercolor Set | Six warm-and-cool primary colors encourage deliberate mixing | Tube paint needs a separate palette or mixing surface |
| Professional traveler | DANIEL SMITH 12-color half-pan set | Portable metal tin, split primaries, earth colors, and a finger ring | Costs more than a basic student set |
| Urban sketcher | QoR Mini or QoR Urban Sketch Half Pan Set | Small, refillable format with options for vivid or urban-focused color | A specialty selection may not suit every subject |
| Portrait painter | QoR Ali Cavanaugh Portrait Colors Set | Focused six-color selection for transparent portrait mixing | Not an all-purpose landscape or classroom palette |
| Granulation enthusiast | Schmincke HORADAM or QoR Granulators | Designed for distinctive granulating textures | Premium or specialized color behavior may be unnecessary for beginners |
| Tube-paint user | M. Graham watercolor sets | Honey-based formulation designed to remain highly rewettable | Requires a palette with wells or pans |
| Outdoor painter who needs flexible support | Sennelier Hands-Free Boxes | Designed to attach to tripods, articulated arms, easels, tables, and benches | Specialized format; regional availability should be checked |
These are use-case recommendations, not a ranking from universally best to worst. A six-color professional palette can be more useful than a 24-color set if its pigments suit your subjects and you understand how to mix them.

The Winsor & Newton Cotman Palette Pocket Set is the strongest default for a beginner who wants one compact kit rather than a collection of separate supplies. It combines a small case, several mixing areas, a travel brush, and a student-grade selection from Winsor & Newton’s 40-color Cotman range. The manufacturer lists 12 named half pans for the set, while also noting that contents can vary.
#1 Best Overall
- Vibrant Colors for Creative Expression: The MEILIANG 24 Colors Watercolor Paint Set offers 24 highly pigmented, vibrant colors that are easy to apply and perfect for students and beginners. Whether you're creating bold artwork or subtle blends, these rich colors inspire creativity and bring your ideas to life
- Smooth Blending for Stunning Effects: With a smooth and fine texture, these watercolors are easy to mix and blend, allowing you to achieve your desired color effects effortlessly. Ideal for wet-on-wet techniques, layering, and more, this set is perfect for various painting styles and skill levels
- Removable Color Pans for Custom Palettes: Each color pan is individually removable, making it easy to replace or refill as needed. Customize your palette to suit your projects, and enjoy the flexibility of a watercolor set that grows with your artistic journey
- Built-in Mixing Palette for Convenient Use: This watercolor set includes a built-in mixing palette, making it easy to blend and test colors on the go. Designed for efficiency, it’s a practical choice for beginners, students, and anyone who values a seamless painting experience
- Portable Metal Case for Artists on the Go: Housed in a sleek and durable metal case, this watercolor set is both stylish and functional. The compact design protects your paints from damage and makes it easy to carry, whether you're sketching outdoors, traveling, or working in the classroom
That combination makes it practical for first exercises, classes, gifts, holidays, and casual plein-air painting. The case provides an immediate working setup, so a new painter does not have to decide which colors to buy, find a suitable travel tin, or carry a separate mixing palette.
Why it is a good first palette
- Ready to use: The paint, mixing areas, case, and brush are packaged together.
- Portable: Its pocket-sized format is intended for travel and plein-air work.
- Approachable: The student-grade Cotman range is a sensible way to practice washes, gradients, value studies, and basic color mixing without beginning with the cost of a large professional collection.
The trade-off is important: Cotman is a student-grade line, not Winsor & Newton’s top professional watercolor range. That does not make it unsuitable for serious learning, but artists who need maximum pigment strength, specialized granulation, or a custom lightfast palette may eventually want to upgrade or supplement it.
Winsor & Newton’s own beginner guidance points to the larger Cotman Deluxe Sketchers’ Pocket Box as its preferred beginner set, highlighting 16 colors and included accessories. That suggests a useful distinction: the smaller Pocket Set is a particularly convenient compact choice, while the Deluxe box may be better if you want more colors and accessories in the initial kit.
2. Best limited palette for learning color mixing: DANIEL SMITH Essentials
The DANIEL SMITH Essentials Watercolor Set contains six 5 ml tubes arranged as warm and cool versions of the primary colors:
- Hansa Yellow Light
- New Gamboge
- Quinacridone Rose
- Pyrrole Scarlet
- Phthalo Blue Green Shade
- French Ultramarine
This is an excellent choice for a learner who wants to understand why mixtures behave differently instead of depending on premixed greens, violets, and browns. A warm-and-cool primary arrangement gives you a compact color system with which to explore secondary colors, neutrals, skin mixtures, foliage, skies, and shadow colors.
It is also a logical professional starter set for painters who prefer buying tubes and filling a personal palette. The limitation is format: the set does not give you the integrated case and mixing wells of a pocket pan kit. You will need an empty palette, half pans, or another suitable mixing surface.
Why a six-color palette can outperform a large set
Every additional color can save mixing time, but it can also make color decisions less deliberate. A limited palette helps you learn:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- how warm and cool versions of a primary produce different mixtures;
- how to neutralize a color without automatically reaching for black;
- which pigments stain, granulate, or dominate a mixture;
- how much water is needed to control value and saturation; and
- how a small, related group of colors creates visual harmony.
Choose this set if the learning process matters as much as immediate convenience. If your priority is opening a case and painting immediately, a half-pan travel set will be easier.
3. Best professional travel palette: DANIEL SMITH 12-color half-pan set
The DANIEL SMITH 12-color half-pan set is a strong professional travel option for painters who want more range than a six-color primary palette without carrying a large studio box. It comes in a compact metal tin intended for studio and on-location work, with a split-primary approach, Sap Green, and four earth colors. A built-in finger ring is designed to make the tin more stable when you are painting away from a table.
The color strategy is especially useful for landscape painters, urban sketchers, and travelers. Split primaries support a broader range of clean mixtures, while Sap Green and earth colors provide convenient starting points for foliage, architecture, soil, stone, warm shadows, and muted urban scenes.

- Beginner-Friendly All-in-One Kit: Perfect for new artists! This set simplifies watercolor painting with ready-to-use colors and tools, so you can start creating confidently right away.
- Portable Metal Case for Artists On-the-Go: Everything stores neatly in a sturdy metal "tool box"—ideal for travel, or plein air painting adventures.
This set is more expensive than a student kit, but its appeal is not simply that it contains more paint. It offers a coherent selection in a format designed around actual travel constraints: limited space, quick setup, and the need to paint while standing or holding the palette.

- You want professional-grade paint in a ready-made travel tin.
- You paint landscapes, buildings, streets, or mixed subjects.
- You want both mixing flexibility and a few useful convenience colors.
- You often paint without a full table and would benefit from the finger ring.
It may be more palette than a complete beginner needs, and a dedicated color mixer may still prefer the simpler DANIEL SMITH Essentials set.
4. Best compact high-chroma option: QoR Mini
Golden’s QoR watercolor system is a good fit for artists who want vivid color, a small footprint, and the ability to customize or refill a palette. The QoR Mini is designed to hold 12 half pans in a tin smaller than an index card, making it particularly attractive for urban sketching, commuting, and plein-air painting where every centimeter of bag space matters.
QoR also offers six-, 12-, and 24-color tube sets and refillable half-pan formats. That means you can start with a compact selection and later replace individual colors or build a palette around your preferred subjects rather than buying an entirely new box.
The QoR range also includes specialty sets. The QoR Intensity Half-Pan Set focuses on six colors chosen for bright, clean mixtures. The separate Granulators, Reflective, and Urban Sketch sets are aimed at different visual effects or workflows.
What makes QoR different in this category
QoR is best understood as a flexible system rather than one universally superior formula. Its strongest advantages here are the combination of high-chroma color options, small refillable formats, and specialty selections. The Intensity set makes sense for painters who want clear, energetic mixtures; the Urban Sketch option is more targeted; and the Granulators or Reflective sets are better treated as additions for a specific look.
Do not choose a specialty QoR set simply because it has unusual colors. If you are still learning basic washes, value, edges, and primary mixing, a conventional limited palette will teach those fundamentals more efficiently.
5. Best premium broad-range palette: Schmincke HORADAM Aquarell
Schmincke HORADAM Aquarell is the choice for artists who want a large, premium watercolor system rather than a minimal travel kit. Schmincke lists 139 standard colors and 50 supergranulating colors, available in both pans and tubes. The range also offers a substantial selection with strong lightfastness ratings.
HORADAM is particularly attractive to painters who want fine control over pigment behavior, a large selection of specialized colors, and access to granulating effects without restricting themselves to a tiny travel palette. Schmincke states that its pans are liquid-poured multiple times, that pan and tube formulations use the same recipes, and that dried paint can be rewetted and reused.
Who should buy HORADAM?
It is a good fit for an experienced painter who:
- knows which pigments they use regularly;
- wants to choose among many granulating, staining, transparent, or earth colors;
- values the option of pans or tubes;
- works in a studio palette but also wants dependable rewetting; or
- is building a carefully selected professional collection over time.
The obvious limitation is that a broad premium range can be unnecessary and expensive for someone learning the basics. More colors do not automatically produce better paintings, and a large box can make mixing choices less focused.

6. Best rewetting-focused tube palette: M. Graham Watercolor Sets
M. Graham watercolor sets are especially appealing to painters who work from tubes or dislike pans that become hard and reluctant to reactivate. The manufacturer describes the formulation as honey-based, using honey with gum arabic and water. It says the honey helps prevent the paint from hardening in tubes or on a palette and reports that the colors rewet almost immediately after extended disuse.
This makes M. Graham a natural choice for an open studio palette that is repeatedly allowed to dry and then reactivated. Tube paint can also be useful when you need a generous amount of fresh color for broad washes.
The line includes a basic five-color set, a 10-color Deluxe set, warm-and-cool primary sets, and subject-oriented choices such as Cityscape, Marinescape, and Pacific Northwest. A subject set can be convenient if its selection matches your work, but a warm-and-cool primary set is usually more educational and adaptable for someone still developing a palette.
Important format consideration
M. Graham sets are tube-based. Plan to use a palette with wells, or squeeze the colors into empty half pans if that suits your workflow. A tube set is not as immediately self-contained as a pocket box, but it gives you control over how much paint you dispense and how you arrange your colors.
The strongest reason to choose M. Graham is rewetting behavior and tube convenience—not a claim that honey-based paint is universally better than every other watercolor binder.
7. Best specialty outdoor format: Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle and Hands-Free Boxes
Sennelier positions its watercolor formulation as honey-rich, with an emphasis on radiance and luminosity. Its La Petite Aquarelle line is designed as a portable travel option for artists who want a compact set without carrying a full studio palette.
The more distinctive option is Sennelier’s Hands-Free Boxes collection, described as available since May 2024. These boxes include a universal screw intended to attach the palette to tripods, articulated arms, easels, tables, benches, or other supports.
That design addresses a problem ordinary travel tins do not: where to put the palette when you are painting outdoors for a long session. A secure support can leave both hands available for brush and water management, which may be useful for artists working from a tripod, sitting on a bench, or painting where a conventional table is unavailable.
Availability and specific configurations may differ by region, so confirm the current box design and attachment compatibility before purchasing. This is a specialized ergonomic solution, not necessarily the best-value first palette.
8. Best portrait-specific palette: QoR Ali Cavanaugh Portrait Colors Set
The QoR Ali Cavanaugh Portrait Colors Set contains six colors selected around a transparent portrait-mixing approach:

- Nickel Azo Yellow
- Pyrrole Orange
- Perylene Crimson
- Sap Green
- Ultramarine Turquoise
- Payne’s Gray
The selection is intended for portrait work involving skin, warm light, reflected color, and atmospheric neutrals. Sap Green and Ultramarine Turquoise can help move mixtures away from predictable orange-and-brown skin formulas, while Payne’s Gray provides a convenient dark neutral for some shadow and background mixtures.
This should be treated as a focused portrait palette, not a universal beginner box. A portrait painter may find it efficient and expressive, but landscape, botanical, and classroom painters may need different yellows, blues, earth colors, or greens. Your own paper, lighting, subject, and preferred mixing style will determine whether the six-color selection becomes a complete working palette or a specialized addition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to choose the right watercolor palette
Pan versus tube
| Choose pans when you prioritize… | Choose tubes when you prioritize… |
|---|---|
| Quick setup and cleanup | Fresh, wet paint for large washes |
| Travel and compact storage | Filling a custom palette |
| Controlled loading of a brush | Dispensing exactly the amount you need |
| A self-contained kit | Large studio paintings or frequent palette rearrangement |
There is no need to treat the choice as permanent. A practical hybrid setup is to buy a focused tube set and place the colors into an empty half-pan or full-pan palette. This gives you tube paint while preserving a compact, organized travel format.
Student grade versus professional grade
Student-grade paint such as Cotman is often the sensible choice for beginners, classes, gifts, and regular practice. Professional ranges such as DANIEL SMITH, QoR, Schmincke HORADAM, and M. Graham become more compelling when pigment behavior, saturation, granulation, lightfastness, or custom color selection matters.
Paint grade is only one part of the result. Good watercolor paper, a suitable brush, water control, edge control, and mixing knowledge can matter more than moving immediately to the most expensive set. A professional palette cannot compensate for paper that buckles badly or for washes that are overloaded with water.

A six-color warm-and-cool primary palette reduces redundancy and makes color mixing easier to study. It is often the best educational choice because every mixture teaches you something about the pigments.
A larger collection is useful when you want immediate access to specialty pigments, granulating colors, iridescent effects, or convenience colors for a recurring subject. The key question is not how many pans a set contains, but whether the additional colors save meaningful time or provide a behavior you cannot easily obtain by mixing.
Travel and urban sketching
For a travel palette, look for:
- a case that closes securely;
- an integrated mixing surface or enough room to carry one;
- removable or refillable pans;
- a footprint that fits your bag or sketchbook pouch;
- a selection appropriate to your usual subjects; and
- a setup you can use without a full table.
The Cotman Pocket Set emphasizes convenience and completeness. The DANIEL SMITH half-pan set emphasizes professional color selection and stability. QoR Mini emphasizes an exceptionally small refillable format. Sennelier’s Hands-Free Boxes emphasize how the palette is supported while you paint. All are portable, but they solve different problems.
Granulation and specialty effects
Granulating pigments separate visibly as they dry, creating texture that can suggest stone, foliage, weathered walls, mountains, or atmospheric surfaces. If that is the effect you specifically want, consider Schmincke HORADAM’s supergranulating range or QoR’s Granulators set.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For shimmer and reflective effects, QoR Reflective is the more relevant specialty option. These sets are not automatically better than conventional watercolors. They are targeted tools, and their unusual behavior can be distracting when your immediate goal is learning flat washes, clean mixtures, transparent layering, and value control.
Best Value
- Do you draw outdoors with all the paint and palettes? Just take this one with you.
- Easy-to-carry size
- Half Pan Size-20mm x 16mm x 10mm
- Solid paint makes it easy to use.
A practical buying strategy for different painters
- Start with your working situation. Decide whether you paint at a desk, while standing, in a sketchbook, or outdoors with no stable surface.
- Choose the format. Pick a self-contained pan kit for convenience, tubes for custom mixing and larger washes, or a tube-and-half-pan hybrid for flexibility.
- Choose the color strategy. Select warm-and-cool primaries for color-mixing practice, a broader earth-and-primary set for varied travel subjects, or a specialty set for portraits, granulation, or reflective effects.
- Check the actual contents. Product configurations can change, and some manufacturers note that listed set contents may vary. Confirm the current color list before ordering.
- Buy for the paper you will use. A modest palette on good watercolor paper is a better learning setup than premium paint on unsuitable paper.
- Test before expanding. Make a chart of each color, its diluted value range, and several two-color mixtures. Add new colors only when you can identify a specific limitation in your current palette.
Building a compact watercolor kit around your palette
A palette is only one part of a portable setup. Tube users may need an empty watercolor half-pan palette or a separate mixing surface. Most travel painters will also benefit from a reliable travel brush, a water brush pen for situations where a cup is inconvenient, and a cold-press watercolor sketchbook suitable for repeated wet washes.
Keep the accessory kit small. One or two brushes, a folding water container, tissue or a cloth, a pencil, and a sketchbook are usually more useful than carrying every brush and color you own. The best travel palette is the one that leaves enough room and attention for painting.
What not to assume when comparing palettes
- More colors do not automatically mean better mixing. Convenience colors can be useful, but a large set may include redundant pigments.
- Professional grade does not guarantee better paintings. Technique, paper, and water control remain essential.
- A manufacturer’s feature description is not an independent performance test. Claims about rewetting, luminosity, intensity, or lightfastness should be understood in the context of the brand’s stated specifications.
- A travel label does not mean every outdoor setup is equally ergonomic. A finger ring, integrated mixing area, or tripod attachment may matter more than the number of pans.
- Availability and contents are not permanent. Prices, packaging, regional stock, and set configurations can change, so verify them before buying.
For most readers, the decision is straightforward: choose Cotman for a convenient beginner kit, DANIEL SMITH Essentials for learning mixing, DANIEL SMITH’s half-pan set for professional travel, QoR Mini for compact high-chroma sketching, Schmincke HORADAM for a broad premium system, M. Graham for rewettable tube paint, Sennelier Hands-Free Boxes for support flexibility outdoors, or the QoR portrait set when portrait mixing is your main subject.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best watercolor palette for a complete beginner?
The Winsor & Newton Cotman Palette Pocket Set is the easiest general recommendation because it combines a compact case, mixing areas, a travel brush, and a ready-made student-grade color selection. If your main goal is learning color theory rather than convenience, the six-color DANIEL SMITH Essentials set is a stronger educational choice, but it requires a separate palette or mixing surface.
Is a pan or tube watercolor palette better?
Pans are usually better for compact travel, quick setup, and controlled brush loading. Tubes are better for fresh paint, large washes, and filling a custom palette. A hybrid setup—buying tubes and placing them in empty half pans—offers much of the flexibility of both formats.
How many colors should a beginner watercolor palette have?
Six well-chosen warm-and-cool primaries are enough to learn a great deal about mixing. A 12-color set can be more convenient for travel and recurring subjects, but additional pans are not automatically more useful. Expand only when a specific color or pigment behavior solves a recurring problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre professional watercolors worth the extra cost?
They can be worthwhile when you need stronger pigment behavior, specialized granulation, high saturation, lightfastness information, or a custom palette. They are not essential for learning washes and basic mixing. Good paper and controlled technique often matter more than immediately upgrading paint grade.
Which watercolor palette is best for urban sketching?
QoR Mini is particularly attractive when the smallest possible refillable format matters. The QoR Urban Sketch Half Pan Set is a more subject-specific option. DANIEL SMITH’s 12-color half-pan set is better if you want a broader professional selection, while Cotman is a practical lower-cost starting point.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the palette that matches your workflow, not the one with the most colors. Choose Cotman for an accessible all-in-one kit, DANIEL SMITH Essentials for color-mixing practice, DANIEL SMITH’s 12-color half-pan set for professional travel, QoR Mini for compact vivid sketching, Schmincke HORADAM for premium breadth, M. Graham for highly rewettable tubes, Sennelier Hands-Free Boxes for flexible outdoor support, and QoR Ali Cavanaugh Portrait Colors for focused portrait work.
