For hand-dipped taper candles, beeswax is a practical choice when you want layers to build quickly; medium- or high-melt-point paraffin is a lower-cost alternative that may take more dips. For production beyond hand dipping, choose a wax grade specified for the actual process—dipping, drawing or extrusion—not simply a wax labeled for candles.

Which wax should you choose for taper candles?

The right wax depends on how you will make the taper and what properties matter to you. These recommendations draw on maker guidance and supplier specifications, not a controlled comparison of finished tapers.

Wax option Best-supported use Advantages Trade-offs and limits
Beeswax Hand-dipped tapers CandleTech says its layers build quickly, which may mean fewer dips. The maker guide also reports long-burning behavior. It can develop a natural bloom and may be somewhat flexible. Higher cost is common in retail contexts, but no price comparison is established here. CandleTech’s hand-dipped taper guide.
Medium- or high-melt-point paraffin Hand-dipped tapers and grades specified for taper or pillar use CandleTech identifies it as a lower-cost alternative; supplier charts name paraffin grades for taper dipping. It may require more dips. Some medium-melt grades may benefit from a hardener. CandleTech cautions against low-melt paraffin used for container candles because it may not hold a taper’s shape. CandleTech; Saco DPS/Morris Wax product chart.
Paraffin with stearic acid (stearine) Formulated tapers CandleTech provides example blends that can make candles firmer or more opaque. Results depend on the wax, wick and candle dimensions; the examples are starting formulas, not universal or independently tested specifications. CandleTech’s guide.
Specialty paraffin grades Drawing, extrusion or dipping at production scale Supplier specifications distinguish grades by process. HYWAX’s 2024 brochure, for example, lists grades for drawing, extrusion and dipping. A specification for one named product does not establish suitability for every wax sold under a general label. Check the current local data sheet and availability. HYWAX 2024 candle wax brochure.
Soy or other low-melt container wax No positive recommendation for freestanding tapers is established in the cited sources No taper-specific advantage is established here. Do not assume container wax will hold a freestanding taper. Look for a supplier specification for the intended process, then test the finished candle. CandleTech; HYWAX brochure.

Why the candle-making process matters

Wax made for dipping, drawing or extrusion is not automatically interchangeable. Hand dipping builds a candle through repeated wax layers, while drawing and extrusion are different production processes. Select the grade for the method you will use, and confirm the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than relying only on a generic label such as “candle wax.”

Hand dipping

Beeswax and medium- or high-melt-point paraffin are documented choices for hand-dipped tapers. CandleTech describes beeswax as building layers quickly; its guidance says paraffin can cost less but may need more dips. Those are maker observations, not results from a matched test of waxes under controlled conditions.

Drawing, extrusion and supplier-grade selection

HYWAX’s 2024 candle wax brochure lists HYWAX 5405, 5605, 5706 and 5805 for drawing; HYWAX 5880 for extrusion; and HYWAX 8461 for dipping. The brochure gives these congealing points: 5405, 53–55°C; 5605, 54–56°C; 5706, 56–58°C; 5805, 58–60°C; 5880, 59–63°C; and 8461, 57–60°C. These are manufacturer specifications for the named grades, not universal targets for all waxes.

Example formula What the maker guide says
100% beeswax CandleTech says this may require a larger wick.
51% beeswax, 20% stearic acid, 29% paraffin The guide describes stearic acid as increasing firmness and opacity in the beeswax blend.
60% paraffin, 40% stearic acid Presented by CandleTech as an example taper formula, not a universal specification.

Test any blend with the specific wax, wick and dimensions you intend to use. A ratio alone cannot establish that a finished taper will burn appropriately.

How to compare wax performance fairly

Wax can affect burn rate, flame height and brightness, but an informal comparison may also reflect differences in wick, dye, fragrance, shape, dimensions or manufacturer. The National Candle Association’s science-project guidance recommends comparing candles of the same size and shape, preferably from one maker, while changing only the wax type. It also notes that manufacturers frequently blend waxes.
