Bhanu Athaiya, the Indian costume designer who shared the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Gandhi, died in Mumbai on October 15, 2020, aged 91. The film was released in 1982; the Oscar was presented at the 1983 ceremony.

Athaiya died in Mumbai on October 15, 2020, aged 91. Her daughter, Radhika Gupta, was quoted in contemporaneous reporting about her death. NDTV’s 2020 report, carrying Press Trust of India reporting, recorded the date and age.
What did Bhanu Athaiya win an Oscar for?
She and John Mollo shared the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. The film came out in 1982, and the award was given at the 1983 Academy Awards ceremony—not in the year of the film’s release. Reports describe Athaiya as the first Indian to win an Academy Award. How did Athaiya build her career in film?
Born in Kolhapur on April 28, 1929, Athaiya began working in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt’s C.I.D (1956). Her film credits included Guide, Amrapali, Teesri Manzil, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Razia Sultan, Lekin, Lagaan, and Swades. Biographical accounts agree that she worked on more than 100 films, but describe the span of her career differently: NDTV/PTI calls it five decades, while the Mumbai Legacy Project profile says six. The shared, well-supported measure is the breadth of her filmography, not a single exact career duration.

It also reproduces a passage from an earlier interview in which Athaiya described film work as a creative outlet: “For me, it (working for cinema) became a way to express myself and let my imagination soar. It was so fulfilling that I did not feel the need to do anything else, like opening a boutique. Top stars started approaching me on their own and recommending me to filmmakers. Nargis loved my designs.”
What made her costume design significant?
Athaiya’s work was not limited to the leading actors’ wardrobes. In a retrospective for The Indian Express, anthropologist Clare M. Wilkinson emphasizes that Athaiya designed for entire films, including secondary characters and extras. Wilkinson describes her historical and regional costume work as drawing on archival and visual research, along with close observation of local dress. That broader approach helped make the costumes part of the film’s world rather than simply a collection of star outfits.
