Chicago cartoonist Bianca Xunise turns observation into comics that can be intimate, funny, political and deeply rooted in ordinary life. Their work moves from autobiographical stories about identity and police brutality to short gags, music-related subjects and syndicated newspaper comics. The connecting idea is not a single cause or format, but the act of paying attention to lived experience and translating its tensions into drawings.
Who is Bianca Xunise?
Bianca Xunise is a Chicago-based cartoonist whose childhood in the city helped shape an interest in art that could express the “magic of city life,” according to their official biography. That biography names Sailor Moon and designer Paul Rand as influences and records a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The same biography lists work for The Washington Post, Riot Fest, Vogue, Hello Giggles and The Nib, as well as a personal column at Shondaland. Because that page carries a 2020 copyright notice, its publication list is best read as a dated snapshot, not a complete account of Xunise’s current clients.
Xunise’s own description is deliberately broad. In the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago video TV for Your Body, they say, “I make comics about a little bit of everything, but mostly slice of life.” That phrase is a useful guide: everyday experience is the starting point, while the subjects can expand into identity, mental health, politics, music and humor.

How does everyday life shape Xunise’s comics?
Xunise describes a process of watching, absorbing and then drawing. In a University of Illinois Chicago Bodies of Work profile, they recall, “I am the youngest in my family so I always felt like I was watching the theatre of adults around me.” The image of a child observing the adults around them helps explain the attention to gestures, conversations and social dynamics that gives the work its lived-in quality.
They describe the next stage as an act of translation: “I sit with life’s ups and downs, the chaos of the world around me, and then translate that into art.” In the MCA Chicago video, Xunise similarly says, “And so I draw comics about this, because I draw comics about the ups and downs of life.” These are statements about practice rather than an outside critic’s interpretation, but together they clarify why personal details and larger pressures can occupy the same panel or strip.

What comics has Bianca Xunise made?
Xunise’s work spans several forms. It includes intimate autobiographical comics, short gag and syndicated-strip work, and contributions connected to broader political or cultural projects. The categories overlap rather than forming separate phases of a career.
| Mode of work | What it can hold | Example or documented connection |
|---|---|---|
| Autobiographical and longer-form comics | Personal experience, identity, mental health and the pressures of public life | Say Her Name; a graphic novel was discussed as a goal in a 2021 interview, but its later publication was not established |
| Gag and short-strip comics | Humor, observation, music and quick turns in everyday situations | Shorter work described in coverage of Xunise’s practice |
| Syndicated newspaper comics | Recurring, widely distributed slice-of-life storytelling | Joining Six Chix in 2020 |
| Essayistic or movement-focused contributions | Social justice, resistance and political context | Contribution to How We Fight Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance |
This range matters because it would be inaccurate to reduce Xunise to social-justice comics alone. Direct political commentary is one part of the practice; humor, domestic observation, music and personal reflection are also central.

What is “Say Her Name” about?
“Say Her Name” is an autobiographical comic about police brutality and social justice. Chicago Humanities reports that the work received the 2017 Ignatz Award for Promising New Talent. The award recognizes a specific story rooted in personal experience while also acknowledging the public stakes of the violence it addresses.
The comic therefore sits at the intersection of two qualities found throughout Xunise’s work: a close, personal point of view and attention to forces that shape life beyond the individual. Its subject is serious, but it should not be treated as evidence that every Xunise comic has the same tone or agenda.

How did Bianca Xunise join Six Chix?
Xunise joined the rotating newspaper strip Six Chix in 2020. Chicago Humanities describes them as the strip’s first Black creator in its 20-year run. NBCU Academy discusses the milestone alongside the work of other Black femme creators and the longer history of representation in syndicated comics.
That distinction should be stated with its attribution and scope. It identifies Xunise’s place in the documented history of Six Chix; it is not a basis for expanding the claim into an unsupported “first ever” description of all syndicated comics. Joining a rotating strip also places Xunise’s slice-of-life approach in a format designed for brief, repeatable encounters with readers.

How do humor and politics coexist in the work?
For Xunise, ordinary life is not separate from politics. A joke can reveal a family dynamic, an awkward social rule or the strain of the wider world without becoming a manifesto. Conversely, a comic about injustice can remain grounded in a person’s feelings, memories and daily routines.
This is why format and tone are useful ways to distinguish parts of the body of work, but not rigid boxes. An autobiographical piece may use humor; a gag strip may carry an observation about identity; a political subject may begin with something noticed at home or in the city. Xunise’s stated interest in “the ups and downs of life” allows those registers to sit together.

What related book includes Xunise’s work?
Chicago Humanities lists Xunise as a contributor to How We Fight Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance. It is a related book connection, not a Xunise solo comic collection. The available information does not establish the specific edition, current stock or a retailer through which it can be purchased, so those details should be checked separately before treating it as a current shopping recommendation.
What is known about a graphic novel?
In a 2021 interview with The Comics Journal, Xunise described wanting to shift energy toward a graphic novel and a deeper creative dive. That interview establishes an artistic direction at that time, but not a confirmed title, release date or later publication. The project’s current status should therefore be left open rather than presented as a published book.
Quick Recap
Why Xunise’s approach stands out
- It begins with observation. Family life, city life and the “theatre of adults” provide material before a comic takes on a larger argument.
- It holds several scales at once. Personal experience can sit beside mental health, identity, music, politics or social justice.
- It uses more than one comic language. Autobiographical narrative, gag construction and newspaper-strip repetition each create different kinds of emphasis.
- It broadens representation without narrowing subject matter. Xunise’s presence in Six Chix has a documented representational significance, while their comics remain free to be funny, mundane, reflective or politically direct.
