The Giants of Mandurah opened on 12 November 2022 as a free outdoor sculpture discovery trail by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. Though most of the Giants were placed around Mandurah and the Peel region, one took up residence in Subiaco: Bille Bob, in Theatre Gardens. The launch was billed by the Western Australian Government as the artist’s first and only outdoor sculpture discovery trail in Australia at that time.
Why one of the Giants is in Subiaco
The trail’s main setting is Mandurah and the Peel region, but the launch announcement also singled out one Giant in Subiaco. That outlying stop is Bille Bob, whom the City of Subiaco later identified as living in Theatre Gardens. The sculpture is part of the wider project, not a Giant located in Mandurah.

Before the public opening, the City of Subiaco announced that a Giant was on its way. Thomas Dambo described the character as a curious wanderer, saying, “This particularly curious Giant has wandered off on their very own adventure.”
What “Australia-first” meant at launch
The trail opened to the public on 12 November 2022. In its 8 November announcement, the Western Australian Government called the free exhibition the artist’s “first and only” outdoor sculpture discovery trail in Australia. That description applies to the claim made at launch; it should not be read as a verified statement about the project’s status today.
FORM initiated and produced the project in collaboration with the City of Mandurah, with the City of Subiaco among the named supporters. The State’s announcement anticipated tourism benefits for accommodation, hospitality and other local businesses, but did not report a realized economic-impact figure.
How to find Bille Bob and explore the trail
The official Giants of Mandurah site presents the sculptures as a discovery game. Visitors can download the Traveller’s Companion or get a map and clues from the Mandurah Visitor Centre. Because the sculptures are placed in different outdoor settings, access varies by location. Check the project’s current access information before planning a route rather than assuming every stop has the same conditions.

In a notice published on 10 November 2023 for Bille Bob’s first birthday, the City of Subiaco estimated that he had received 92,639 visitors since arriving, equivalent to an average of 339 visits per day. Those are figures attributed to the City for that milestone, not current totals.
