Brahmacharini Mata is a form of Goddess Parvati worshipped on the second day of Navratri. In Hindu devotional tradition, her story centers on penance undertaken with devotion to Shiva; her image, commonly shown with a prayer rosary and water pot, represents discipline and perseverance.
Who is Brahmacharini Mata?
Brahmacharini is one of the Navadurga, the nine forms of the Goddess honored during Navratri. Drik Panchang describes her as Parvati in her unmarried form, associated with the austerities she undertook in her devotion to Shiva. The name is commonly linked with a life of spiritual discipline and devotional practice.
This is a sacred narrative within Hindu tradition, not a biographical account established as secular history. Accounts of Parvati’s austerities vary, and no single chronology should be treated as definitive.

The story and what it represents
In the devotional account, Parvati undertakes severe penance with Shiva as her desired consort. Brahmacharini’s form expresses tapas—the effort and discipline of spiritual practice—and steadfast devotion toward a chosen purpose.
A government-hosted Navratri guide says, “Brahmacharini represents sacrifice, determination, and discipline.” It also presents her story as teaching penance, self-restraint, and devotion on the spiritual path. These are interpretations of the tradition rather than a promise of any particular result.

Why is Brahmacharini worshipped on the second day of Navratri?
In the Navadurga sequence described by Drik Panchang and the government-hosted guide, Brahmacharini is honored on Navratri’s second day. That ordinal place is part of the festival’s ritual sequence; it does not correspond to one fixed Gregorian date. Navratri dates shift from year to year according to the calendar and observance.
How is Brahmacharini Mata depicted?
Drik Panchang describes her as barefoot and two-armed. In her right hand she holds a japa mala, or prayer beads, and in her left a kamandalu, a water pot. These attributes connect her image with prayer, ascetic practice, and restraint.

Mantra and customary worship
Drik Panchang gives this mantra for Brahmacharini:
ॐ देवी ब्रह्मचारिण्यै नमः॥
Transliteration: Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah.
The same source gives a prayer beginning:
दधाना कर पद्माभ्यामक्षमाला कमण्डलू।

The government-hosted guide mentions flowers, sweets, and fruits as offerings, as well as chanting hymns and meditating on her qualities. Such descriptions are customary examples, not a universal ritual prescription. Practices differ among communities and households; the sources do not establish a required flower, food, fast, garment color, or number of mantra repetitions. A japa mala may be used as an optional aid for recitation, but it is not a requirement.
