Brandon Blackwood’s more-than-3,000-square-foot Carroll Gardens townhouse was transformed through a gut renovation led in an unusually personal way: his mother, Carleen Haughton, served as contractor, working with Urban Pioneering Architecture and an all-Caribbean team of craftsmen and builders. Blackwood’s brief was deliberately quiet—a neutral, natural-textured setting in which his art collection could take the visual lead—while the house itself remained a place for friends, artists, meals and movie nights.
The result, documented by Camille Okhio for Architectural Digest on September 30, 2026, is less a showcase of a single decorating style than a record of family trust, Brooklyn memory and highly individual choices. A spiral staircase, a surprise skylight, custom marble pieces, vintage furniture and rooms designed for gathering all contribute to the house’s identity.

A renovation organized around family and trust
Carleen Haughton was the contractor
Haughton was not simply a relative offering advice. She acted as the contractor for the four-story project, coordinating the work with Urban Pioneering Architecture. Blackwood’s description captures the emotional basis of the collaboration: “This house was built by people who really love me.” The construction team included Caribbean craftsmen and builders who had known Blackwood since his teenage years, giving the project a continuity that a conventional, impersonal build would not have had.
The family connection also reaches back to Blackwood’s career. He has said that his mother encouraged him to commit to fashion design. In the townhouse, her role became practical as well as supportive: she helped turn his ideas about atmosphere, circulation and materials into a finished home.

Urban Pioneering Architecture provided the architectural partnership
Urban Pioneering Architecture worked with Haughton and the builders on the gut renovation. The feature identifies the practice and the team, but it does not publish a room-by-room division of responsibilities, a construction schedule, a budget or permit information. Those omissions matter: the home tour documents the finished experience rather than providing a construction record or an independent inspection of the work.
The scale is reported, not a benchmark
Architectural Digest describes the townhouse as more than 3,000 square feet and reports that Blackwood outbid 17 other people to acquire it. Both figures belong to this property’s story; they are not evidence of a typical Brooklyn renovation cost, timeline or market trend. The tour also says this was the third house Blackwood had bought for himself since starting his brand, without publishing a purchase price or sales history.

Blackwood grew up in Bed-Stuy and remembers the neighborhood’s social life—sitting on neighbors’ stoops and experiencing a strong sense of community. That memory helps explain why the townhouse is planned as a meeting point rather than a private retreat sealed off from other people. Friends have keys, artists gather there, and meals and movie nights are part of the ordinary use of the rooms.
His role as host is intentional. “I always take it upon myself to be the gatherer,” Blackwood says. Artist and friend Tschabalala Self describes the atmosphere from a guest’s perspective: “Brandon’s house feels like a cross between being at a spa, a luxury hotel, and my Auntie’s.” The combination of polished finishes and familial ease is central to the design; neither side makes sense without the other.
The design brief: serenity first, art second only in the visual hierarchy
A neutral base layer
Blackwood’s stated aim was straightforward: “I just wanted an escape. I wanted natural textures, fibers, and natural colors.” Creams, stone, wood and woven or tactile surfaces create a restrained background. The approach is not an absence of design. It is a decision to keep architectural finishes and furniture from competing with paintings, sculpture and objects.

The entry’s calm seating area establishes that tone immediately. Natural-stone elements, quiet upholstery and a tall rubber tree provide texture without introducing a loud pattern. In rooms where the art is more concentrated, the same restraint gives the eye a place to rest between works.

Blackwood fell in love with the house’s energy and volumes despite its appearance before renovation. The project therefore emphasized how the existing four-story form could be experienced: movement between floors, framed views, and moments of daylight rather than a collection of disconnected decorated rooms.
Room-by-room: what the townhouse contains
Entry and first-floor living spaces
The entry combines a spiral staircase with a composed seating vignette. The sofa and side table are from CB2, the coffee table is from Maitland Smith, and flowerpots were sourced in Mexico. A rubber tree from BlackBoyPlants adds height and greenery. The article identifies the featured plant and furnishings but does not establish that the same pieces remain in stock or provide their dimensions and specifications.
The staircase was one of Blackwood’s nonnegotiables. Its sculptural geometry makes circulation a visible design element rather than a purely utilitarian route. Because it is encountered on arrival, it also links the public, social character of the lower floors to the more private rooms above.
Second-floor living room
A 1970s Mah Jong sofa purchased through 1stDibs gives the second-floor living room a low, expansive seating profile. Against that softer vintage presence, Blackwood designed a black-tiled coffee table himself. The pairing illustrates a recurring method in the house: a recognizable vintage form is balanced by a custom piece with a sharper, more architectural character.

Dining room
The dining room centers on a custom marble table designed by Blackwood and surrounded by CB2 chairs. A ceiling light from The Lights Gallery supplies illumination above the table. This is one of the clearest examples of the home’s entertaining function: the principal object is large and communal, while the surrounding palette remains sufficiently quiet for food, conversation and nearby art to share attention.
Top-floor closet and primary suite
The top floor contains a two-room closet, a primary bedroom and a bathroom. A Fiam Italy phantom mirror, an RH bed and Parachute Home bedding appear among the furnishings. Vintage Fabio Lenci chairs add another period note, while a cedar Ofuro tub from Mezmob brings a tactile, spa-like material into the suite.
Blackwood says he does not use the tub; his steam shower gets daily use. That detail is useful because it distinguishes photographed amenities from the way the owner actually lives. The bathroom also includes a travertine sink, vanity and medicine cabinets designed by Blackwood. These are custom elements, but the feature does not provide fabrication details, stone thicknesses or installation specifications.
The skylight surprise
At the top-floor landing between the closet and primary suite, Haughton surprised Blackwood with a skylight. It introduces daylight at a point that could otherwise be treated as a passage, turning the landing into a pause in the vertical sequence. The skylight is a particularly personal intervention because it was not one of Blackwood’s stated demands; it was a gift from the contractor who knew both the building and her son.

The guest room uses a CB2 bed, Parachute Home bedding, a Nordic Knots rug and a WoodWoods Studio sconce. Blackwood designed the Rosso Levanto marble nightstands, giving the room a custom anchor amid readily sourced pieces. The mix supports the house’s hospitality: the room is finished and comfortable, but it does not feel like a generic hotel suite.

Backyard and basement
The townhouse includes a landscaped backyard for outdoor use and a basement retaining an original pizza oven. The tour does not specify the landscaping plan, oven restoration, mechanical systems or basement program. What it does establish is that old and new coexist: a gut renovation can preserve a distinctive remnant when it contributes to the home’s character.
How the furnishing strategy balances three competing choices
The rooms repeatedly set a custom decision beside a retail or vintage one. That is not presented as a formal design formula, but it is a useful way to read the house.
| Design choice | Examples in the townhouse | Effect on the room |
|---|---|---|
| Custom pieces | Blackwood’s marble dining table, black-tiled coffee table, Rosso Levanto nightstands, closet shelving and dresser, and travertine bathroom elements | Provides exact scale, material continuity and a personal signature where the room needs an anchor |
| Retail pieces | CB2 seating and bed, RH bed, Parachute Home bedding, Nordic Knots rug and WoodWoods Studio sconce | Supplies practical furnishings and textiles without requiring every object to be fabricated for the house |
| Vintage or previously owned pieces | 1970s Mah Jong sofa from 1stDibs and vintage Fabio Lenci chairs | Adds history, irregularity and a softer counterpoint to new stone and architectural finishes |
| Art and objects | Works by Tschabalala Self, Chris Ofili, Diego Rivera, Andy Warhol and other artists, plus plants, ceramics and fragrance | Gives the neutral envelope its strongest color, narrative and visual movement |
The comparison is about roles, not a shopping prescription. The feature does not establish current availability, pricing or construction quality for any named item, and vintage condition can vary substantially.

Art is the organizing principle, not an afterthought
Blackwood’s collection is central to the townhouse’s identity. The artists named in the tour include Tschabalala Self, Chris Ofili, Diego Rivera and Andy Warhol, among others. Their work is shown in rooms whose finishes are intentionally controlled, allowing color, line and subject matter to change from one space to the next.
This strategy explains why the palette can remain natural without becoming monotonous. Texture comes from stone, fibers, wood, upholstery and plants; visual intensity comes from the collection. The home’s calm is therefore an active framing device for art rather than a claim that every surface should be blank.

A house designed for gathering without losing private refuge
The four-story arrangement supports different kinds of use. Entry and living areas welcome guests, the dining room supports shared meals, and the guest room extends that hospitality overnight. The upper-floor suite gives Blackwood a retreat above the social rooms. The backyard and basement add settings for informal gatherings, while the skylit landing creates a quieter transition between public and private zones.
That range helps reconcile two descriptions that might otherwise seem contradictory: Self’s “spa” and “Auntie’s” comparison. The spa-like quality comes from natural materials, muted color and bathing amenities; the familial quality comes from open invitations, personal art, food and the sense that the house is embedded in a community.
What the tour can—and cannot—tell a prospective renovator
Transferable design lessons
- Define the atmosphere before selecting individual products. Blackwood’s neutral, natural brief gives disparate custom, retail and vintage pieces a coherent context.
- Design circulation as part of the experience. The spiral staircase and skylit landing make movement through the house memorable.
- Reserve custom fabrication for elements where scale or daily use matters, such as a dining table, storage, bathroom fixtures or nightstands.
- Plan entertaining spaces around actual habits. Blackwood’s emphasis on meals, movie nights and friends with keys is reflected in generous seating and a communal dining table.
- Use art to determine visual intensity. A quieter finish palette can support a collection more effectively than competing patterns and colors.
Information the published feature does not provide
- No renovation budget, timeline, permit history or construction specifications are stated.
- No independent assessment of workmanship, building performance or code compliance is included.
- Dimensions, material grades, fabrication sources and installation methods for the custom pieces are not published.
- Retail and vintage availability may have changed after the September 30, 2026 feature.
Those limits do not diminish the design story; they define it accurately. This is a reported home tour about collaboration, atmosphere and personal use, not a costed renovation manual.
Named products and availability cautions
The feature also includes callouts for a Maitland Smith table, a Ferm Living vase, a Curvo sofa, a Brandon Blackwood Kuei bag and Byredo fragrance. They appear as part of the photographed environment, but the article does not establish current stock, prices or full specifications. The same caution applies to the rubber tree: the featured plant came from BlackBoyPlants, while “rubber tree houseplant” is only a comparable category for anyone trying to recreate the look.
For readers studying the rooms rather than reproducing them exactly, the more durable takeaway is the hierarchy: choose a calm envelope, add tactile natural materials, place a few high-impact custom or vintage pieces, and let art and real patterns of gathering determine where visual and physical emphasis belong.
The central idea behind the Carroll Gardens townhouse
Blackwood’s townhouse works because its formal decisions and personal history point in the same direction. Haughton’s contractor role, the Caribbean team’s long relationship with Blackwood, the spiral staircase, the unexpected skylight and the art-filled rooms all make the renovation feel authored by people connected to the homeowner rather than assembled from isolated trends.
The house is serene without being anonymous and polished without losing the warmth of a Brooklyn gathering place. Its most distinctive feature is not a single sofa, stone or light fixture, but the way family, craft, memory and collecting were made to coexist across four floors.
