A beautiful brick sidewalk starts with the right paving units and a foundation designed for your soil, drainage, traffic and accessibility needs. Fired clay pavers can complement masonry, roofing and planting while providing a durable walking surface, but an attractive pattern cannot compensate for settlement, standing water, wide joints or a bumpy route.

Use this guide to choose paving-grade brick, lay out a path that suits the house, select an appropriate construction system and maintain the finished walk without damaging the units.

What makes a brick sidewalk work

Curb appeal is the visual objective: the sidewalk should look intentional from the street and feel natural beside the front door, planting beds and driveway. The practical objective is equally important. A successful walk is firm, stable, reasonably smooth, well drained, comfortable underfoot and maintainable when a unit or joint needs attention.

Start by treating the project as a pavement system rather than a surface treatment. Subgrade, base, bedding, joint material, edge restraint, paver choice and drainage all affect the result. The Brick Industry Association (BIA) identifies subgrade conditions, traffic, accessibility, drainage and appearance as system-selection factors in its technical-note index: BIA Technical Notes. A detail that works for a lightly used garden path may be unsuitable beside a driveway, on expansive soil or in a public right-of-way.

Choose genuine paving-grade clay pavers

Buy units made for paving

In a paving project, “brick” should mean a fired clay unit manufactured for exterior paving, not a wall brick or a concrete product molded to resemble brick. BIA describes clay pavers for pathways, sidewalks, driveways and patios and notes their range of colors and sizes: Clay Pavers. Ask the supplier for the product’s paving designation, dimensions, thickness, surface texture, absorption or freeze-thaw information where relevant, and recommended installation system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color is fired through the clay. BIA states that clay paver color does not fade and says clay pavers do not require sealers in the way its comparison describes concrete units. Those are BIA industry-association claims, not a guarantee for every product, so confirm the manufacturer’s data and the exposure conditions at your property before buying.

Check strength and climate suitability

BIA publishes the statement that “Most clay pavers have strengths exceeding 10,000 psi.” Treat that as the association’s broad published claim, not a specification for every unit. Obtain the selected product’s technical sheet, especially where the walk will see de-icing salts, repeated freezing, persistent moisture or occasional vehicle loading. BIA also compares clay pavers as resisting salt and freezing more consistently than concrete units; product-specific testing and local climate remain the deciding evidence.

Order enough material from the same production run when possible. Different firings can vary in tone, and a later replacement may not match. Confirm delivered quantity, pallet weight, breakage policy and local availability before scheduling excavation.

Design the route before choosing a pattern

Set the geometry

Mark the proposed walk with stakes and string, a garden hose or removable paint. Walk it at night and in wet weather if possible. Check that the route does not force a sharp turn at the door, collide with downspouts or tree trunks, or create a trip at the driveway. A gentle curve can soften a formal facade, while a straight run usually looks more deliberate with a symmetrical entrance.

Decide the clear walking width before adding borders. Keep the usable field planar; avoid decorative raised bands where a stroller, cane, wheelchair or delivery cart must travel. Allow for the actual paver module and joint so the edges do not leave awkward slivers that require excessive cutting.

Use patterns for visual character, not as a substitute for engineering

Pattern or layout Visual effect Planning considerations
Running bond Simple, directional and compatible with many house styles Works well on straight routes; align the long dimension with the walk or across it according to the desired emphasis. Plan edge cuts.
Basket weave More decorative and traditionally residential Best on broad, regular areas where the repeated module reads clearly; curves and narrow paths require more cutting.
Herringbone Strong geometric focus and a formal, energetic appearance Requires careful layout and perimeter cuts. Do not claim structural superiority unless the selected paving system specifically supports that use.
Contrasting border Frames the route and separates it from lawn or beds Use a restrained color contrast and keep the border flush with the walking field to avoid a bump.

Color should relate to the home’s masonry, roof, trim and planting rather than compete with them. Mock up several loose pavers in daylight and shade. A single field with a narrow, darker edge often gives more curb appeal than several competing colors.

Select the construction system for the site

Investigate conditions first

  • Identify soil type, soft spots, previous fill and areas that stay wet.
  • Trace roof, driveway and surface-water flow; do not send runoff toward the foundation or trap it against the walk.
  • Locate roots that may lift the route and utilities before excavation.
  • Decide whether the pavement will carry pedestrians only, occasional maintenance equipment or vehicles.
  • Inspect every transition to steps, a driveway, a curb ramp, a public sidewalk or a property line.

There is no responsible universal excavation depth, base thickness or slope for every brick sidewalk. Those values depend on soil, climate, loading, drainage design, paver system and local requirements. Use the manufacturer’s installation detail and applicable local rules; involve a qualified hardscape professional when conditions are uncertain.

Understand the main assemblies

A sand-set or other flexible assembly places pavers over a prepared base and bedding layer. When correctly built, it can allow individual units to be lifted and reset later. Its joint sand, edge restraint and base drainage must be designed together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A mortar-set assembly bonds units to a mortar bed and is a different construction detail, not a stronger version of a sand-set walk by default. Bituminous and other assemblies also exist. BIA’s technical-note series separates sand-setting, bituminous, mortar-setting, permeable and accessible approaches; select the note that matches the project rather than copying one section into every site.

A permeable pavement is a whole-system design involving open-graded materials, infiltration, storage and appropriate soil conditions. Open-looking joints alone do not make a sidewalk permeable. Use a permeable design only when the stormwater plan and site soils support it.

A practical installation sequence

The exact dimensions belong in the chosen system specification. The sequence below shows the decisions a homeowner should expect and the quality checks that prevent common failures.

  1. Lay out the finished edges. Mark both sides, confirm door and driveway clearances, and establish finished elevations at every transition.
  2. Plan water movement. Decide where runoff will go and how the walk will shed water without creating a slippery cross-slope or ponding beside the house.
  3. Excavate to the system detail. Remove organic material and weak fill. Keep the subgrade from becoming churned mud; protect it from rain while work is paused.
  4. Prepare and compact the base. Build the specified aggregate or other foundation in controlled lifts with the equipment required by the design. The goal is uniform support, not merely a hard-looking surface.
  5. Install edge restraint where the assembly requires it. Restraint prevents lateral movement and protects the edge from lawn equipment and foot traffic.
  6. Place the bedding or setting material. Keep the layer consistent and avoid walking on an unprotected finished bed. For mortar or bituminous work, follow the product and system instructions exactly.
  7. Lay the pavers. Start from a stable reference edge, maintain the planned joint, and blend units from several pallets so color variation is distributed.
  8. Check line, plane and transitions continuously. A long straightedge and level reveal rocking units, abrupt changes and a crowned or hollowed surface before joints lock everything in place.
  9. Fill and finish joints. Use the joint material specified for the assembly. Sweep excess from the surface and compact or tool the joints as directed.
  10. Inspect the route as a user would. Push a cart, walk in ordinary shoes and check the path after water is applied. Correct lippage, rocking units or ponding before opening the walk.

If a section settles later, do not simply add material on top. Lift the affected pavers, find whether the base lost support or water is moving through it, correct that cause and then reset the units.

Make the sidewalk accessible and comfortable

The U.S. Access Board describes an accessible pedestrian route as firm, stable and slip-resistant, with flush transitions and no changes in level: Chapter 5 – Model Sidewalks. It cautions that decorative pavers and beveled edges can create a painfully bumpy surface. Even a private garden path benefits from the same principles.

Keep the walking field as smooth and planar as the selected paver allows. Avoid proud borders, abrupt thresholds and heavily textured units in the main route. Evaluate the surface when wet, not just when dry, and make sure a door landing does not become a drainage low point.

BIA’s 2012 Accessible Clay Brick Pavements note recommends minimizing joint and chamfer widths and choosing patterns that reduce wheelchair vibration. It lists maximum widths of 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) for sand-filled joints and 1/2 inch (13 mm) for mortar-filled joints, along with lippage recommendations. These are recommendations in a 2012 trade-association note, not universally current legal limits. Confirm the governing jurisdiction and project-specific standard before using those dimensions. The note also says, “Repair pavements that inhibit accessibility as soon as practical.” Read the complete document at Accessible Clay Brick Pavements.

Control drainage and keep the walk level

“Level” should mean an even, predictable walking surface, not a completely flat plane that holds water. Establish finished elevations so water leaves the path, door thresholds remain safe and the pavement does not settle into a trough. Direct downspouts away from the base or connect them to an appropriate drainage solution; never rely on joint sand to solve concentrated roof runoff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch the first heavy rain. Mark any puddles, erosion at the edge or washout in the joints, then correct the drainage or edge detail before winter. In freeze-prone regions, persistent saturation and poor support increase the chance of movement; verify the selected product and assembly for local exposure.

DIY or hire a hardscape professional?

A short, accessible garden path on competent soil may be a manageable DIY project for someone who can excavate, compact and check grades accurately. Relevant equipment can include a level, rubber mallet and plate compactor; rental yards and landscape-supply companies are often more practical for heavy equipment than buying it for one job.

Get professional help when the route is in a public right-of-way, must meet an accessibility standard, crosses poor or filled soil, carries vehicles, approaches steps or a driveway, or requires complex drainage. A local hardscape contractor or clay-paver showroom can help match the product, base and edge detail to regional conditions. Ask for a written section drawing, transition details, drainage plan and maintenance expectations rather than accepting a pattern sketch alone.

Appearance Fired colors, varied sizes and a masonry-compatible character; BIA says fired color does not fade. Broad color and shape selection; long-term appearance depends on the specific product and exposure. Varies by stone, tile or regional product; confirm compatibility with freeze, wet and slip conditions.
Wet walking surface Choose a texture and joint detail suitable for wet use; verify product data. Surface varies widely; inspect the actual unit when wet. Must be evaluated product by product for slip resistance and lippage.
Salt and freezing BIA compares clay pavers as resisting salt and freezing more consistently than concrete units; verify the selected unit. Performance depends on mix, finish, installation and exposure. Local climate ratings and manufacturer data govern.
Installation Requires a system-matched base, bedding, joints and edge restraint. Also requires a system-matched foundation and drainage plan. May require entirely different setting and drainage details.
Repairs and upkeep Individual units in a flexible assembly can often be lifted and reset; replenish joints as needed. Repairability varies by system and color match. Depends on availability and the ability to replace a matching unit.

Maintain the finished brick sidewalk

Routine care

  • Sweep regularly to remove grit, leaves and soil that can hold moisture or encourage weeds.
  • For washing, begin with mild detergent and water and test an inconspicuous area.
  • Do not make annual sealing a default requirement; BIA says clay pavers do not require sealers like concrete units do.
  • Clear snow and ice promptly with equipment appropriate to the paver and joint system.
  • Inspect at least annually, and sooner after severe weather or drainage changes.

BIA warns that pressurized water can cause irreparable damage when used incorrectly and is appropriate only for certain brick types. If pressure washing is unavoidable, confirm the paver manufacturer’s limits, use the least aggressive method that works and test first. Its maintenance guidance and FAQs are available at BIA FAQs.

Address movement early

Replace missing joint sand in a sand-set walk when it has washed or swept out. Investigate low, loose or rocking units rather than covering them with more sand. Settlement commonly points to inadequate support, water movement or edge failure; resetting without correcting the cause invites a repeat problem.

For an accessible route, remove any obstruction promptly. Annual inspection, joint replenishment, suitable snow-and-ice tools and timely repairs are the maintenance practices BIA recommends for accessible pavement.

Plan the budget around unknowns

The sources available do not provide a dependable sidewalk-specific price, labor statistic or measured increase in resale value. Do not use a generic cost-per-square-foot figure as a promise. Request local estimates that separate demolition, excavation, base, drainage, pavers, cuts, edge restraint, joint material, equipment and disposal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For material planning, calculate the walk’s area from the actual layout, add a project-appropriate allowance for cuts and breakage, and confirm the supplier’s units per square foot. Delivered freight and pallet handling can materially change the total. Curb appeal is a design benefit, not evidence of a guaranteed property-value uplift.

Sources for specifications and current rules

Use the product manufacturer’s current installation instructions and your local building, right-of-way and accessibility requirements. The BIA resources on Outdoor Living, Clay Pavers and Technical Notes explain material and system choices. For public-route accessibility concepts, consult the U.S. Access Board sidewalk guidance. Recheck requirements, product availability and specifications before ordering or permitting work.
