“Disabled drinking fountains from Britex” refers to a 29 March 2012 Architecture & Design product listing, not a current specification sheet. The useful current picture comes from Britex literature issued later: a DDIS accessible drinking fountain, a TP6 disabled drinking trough, and an accessible twin round fountain. They differ in form, access arrangement and optional equipment.

What the original Architecture & Design listing tells you
The source page, “Disabled drinking fountains from Britex”, is dated 29 March 2012. It identifies the subject as a family of accessible drinking fixtures made by the Australian stainless-steel manufacturer Britex, but its age matters: details on a 2012 product listing should not be treated as current dimensions, options, finishes or installation instructions.
A later product document gives a named model and a clearer terminology. The Britex DDIS Installation Guide, revision 5 dated 1 December 2025, calls the DDIS an “Accessible Drinking Fountain.” Separate Britex literature identifies the TP6 as a “Disabled Drinking Trough,” while an accessible twin round fountain document describes refrigerated and non-refrigerated versions. These documents are the better basis for a current shortlist.

What to confirm for a DDIS schedule
- Record the exact DDIS variant and whether a bottle filler is required.
- Record whether the dog bowl configuration is required and where it will sit relative to the primary user approach.
- Request the current dimensional and connection drawing for that combination rather than relying on an older catalogue image.
- Coordinate the waste, water supply and any service access shown on the current installation documentation.
The guide establishes the model identity and options; it does not reproduce every accessibility clause or certify every possible installation. Treat the DDIS as a product to be reviewed against the project brief, not as an automatic substitute for an access assessment.

TP6 disabled drinking trough
The TP6 is a different physical solution. Its product literature describes a drinking trough with pre-plumbed push-button bubblers and a disabled-access end that can be ordered for either left-hand or right-hand access. The access-side choice is significant when the trough is placed against a wall, beside another fixture or along a circulation route.
The available TP6 document is a product sheet rather than a project-specific compliance report: Britex Disabled Drinking Trough product literature. It warns that details may alter without notice and directs readers to Britex for current product literature. Use the left- or right-hand access selection in the equipment schedule, then verify that the selected orientation matches the actual approach space.
When the trough form deserves consideration
- A project wants several push-button bubblers along one continuous trough.
- The layout benefits from choosing which end provides the disabled access position.
- The designer can reserve enough length and approach space for the selected orientation.
Those are planning reasons to investigate TP6; they are not evidence that a particular layout meets a specified access standard. The final decision still depends on the current drawing, site geometry and applicable regulations.

Britex’s accessible twin round fountain literature, revised 4 April 2025, documents two cooling approaches: refrigerated and non-refrigerated. It also lists a bottle filler and pet bowl as optional equipment. The source is the Accessible Twin Round Fountain product document.
Refrigerated versus non-refrigerated
The refrigerated and non-refrigerated variants are a product choice, not a performance claim. The literature confirms that both versions exist, but the available material does not provide a current cooling-capacity figure, energy-use value or water-temperature guarantee. Ask for the exact technical sheet if those values affect equipment selection or building-services calculations.
Combining the options
A bottle filler can change the standing position and reach envelope around the fountain. A pet bowl can introduce a second user zone and additional cleaning considerations. Select the option set first, then check the manufacturer’s current drawing for the resulting footprint, service points and access clearances.

A specification workflow that avoids common errors
- Define the users and setting. Note whether the fixture serves a school, public building, workplace, park or another environment, and whether bottle filling or animal access is part of the brief.
- Choose the product form. Shortlist DDIS, TP6 or the twin round fountain based on the available wall, floor and circulation geometry. Do not choose from a 2012 image alone.
- Fix orientation and options. For TP6, state left- or right-hand disabled access. For DDIS or twin round, state whether a bottle filler and dog or pet bowl are required. For the twin round model, state refrigerated or non-refrigerated.
- Obtain current manufacturer documentation. Ask Britex for the latest drawing, dimensions, connection details, option codes and installation instructions for the exact configuration. The TP6 sheet specifically cautions that details can change without notice.
- Set out the approach space. Check the actual clear floor area, reach path, adjacent obstructions, door swings, kerbs and other fixtures. A product label such as “accessible” does not remove the need to test the installed arrangement.
- Coordinate plumbing and services. Locate water supply, waste, isolation points and any refrigeration-related services from the current drawing. Confirm that the selected options do not move service points into the required approach zone.
- Complete the access review. Have the project’s access consultant or responsible designer check the applicable current requirements for the jurisdiction, building class and use. Record the review against the exact model and configuration.
- Lock the schedule before procurement. Include the model, orientation, cooling choice, fillers, bowls, finish and drawing revision. Recheck the delivered unit against that schedule before rough-in and again before installation.
Plumbing and compliance responsibilities
The DDIS guide gives a specific installation instruction: “Installation of this unit must be in accordance with the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), AS/NZS 3500.1 and AS/NZS 3500.2.” That sentence appears in the revision 5 guide dated 1 December 2025. The guide is useful evidence of the plumbing references Britex expects, but it is not, by itself, an independent assessment that a particular project configuration satisfies every accessibility rule.

The access review is a separate task: verify the current accessibility standard and any building, state or territory requirements that govern the project. Do not infer exact reach ranges, clearances, bowl heights or approach dimensions from the product name.
Evidence to retain in the project file
- The current Britex drawing and installation guide revision used for the order.
- The selected option and orientation, including TP6 left- or right-hand access.
- Plumbing layouts showing supply and waste coordination.
- The access consultant’s or responsible designer’s review of the installed arrangement.
- Any site changes that alter the approach space, adjacent obstructions or service access.
Why 2012 and 2025 information should not be mixed
The Architecture & Design listing is valuable for identifying the original subject, but it is eleven years older than the DDIS guide’s 1 December 2025 revision. Product names, option packages, dimensions and installation details can change over that interval. A specification that copies a photograph or description from the older listing may therefore select an obsolete configuration.

Use the 2012 page as historical context, then use the dated DDIS guide and the 2025 twin round document for current model and option questions. For TP6, use the available product sheet only as an identification aid and obtain the latest issue from Britex before finalising the order.

Long trough serving several users
Investigate TP6, specify the push-button bubbler arrangement and select the disabled-access end on the left or right to match the site. Before rough-in, confirm that the selected end remains clear after walls, rails, landscaping and other fixtures are installed.
Fountain serving people and pets
For a DDIS, document the dog bowl option; for the twin round fountain, document the pet bowl option. Treat the bowl as part of the original set-out because it adds another user position and can affect cleaning access and circulation.
Questions to resolve with Britex before ordering
- Is the quoted model and option combination still current?
- Which drawing revision controls dimensions and service locations?
- What water-supply and waste connections are required for the exact configuration?
- Does refrigeration require additional electrical or ventilation provisions?
- What is the manufacturer’s current guidance for cleaning, maintenance access and replacement parts?
- Are there installation details that differ between left- and right-hand TP6 access?
These questions turn a generic product reference into a buildable specification. They also create a clear record if the selected model changes between design, procurement and installation.
Bottom line for specifiers
Britex’s documented accessible-fountain choices are a DDIS pedestal fountain, a TP6 trough and an accessible twin round fountain. The DDIS and twin round models can be configured with bottle-filling and animal-bowl options; the twin round model can be refrigerated or non-refrigerated; and TP6 access can be set to the left or right. The 2012 listing should be treated as historical context.
