A 7,000-square-foot Brooklyn Heights brownstone became a highly personal family home in six weeks—not through another construction phase, but through a fast, disciplined decorating project. Designer Sasha Bikoff worked with the architecture and modern finishes already completed by architect Baxt Ingui and contractor SMR Craftworks, then used paint, wallpaper, lighting, antiques, upholstery, and custom pieces to give each room a distinct identity.
The result is colorful without being random: a deep-toned living room, an emerald den, patterned dining and bath walls, a globe-inspired office, a nature-linked bedroom, and a space-themed nursery. The project shows how a strong color plan can transform a finished house when structural changes are no longer practical.

Architectural Digest’s March 15, 2024 home tour describes the property as a recently remodeled Brooklyn Heights brownstone of about 7,000 square feet. The major architectural work was already complete. Bikoff was not asked to redesign the floor plan, move walls, replace the kitchen, or undertake a full renovation. She had six weeks to personalize a turnkey interior under existing conditions.
That distinction matters. A construction schedule can include demolition, inspections, mechanical work, millwork, plaster, flooring, and permitting. This project’s reported timeline was a decorating window: selecting finishes and furnishings, coordinating fabrication, installing lighting and textiles, and making the completed rooms feel inhabited. The article does not provide a day-by-day schedule, budget, labor count, or independently audited measurement of the six weeks.

Working within finished architecture also created useful discipline. Instead of treating every surface as changeable, the designer had to decide which existing elements were worth keeping and where color or pattern would have the greatest effect. The modern kitchen, for example, already benefited from abundant natural light and required little refinishing, so smaller interventions could carry the personalization.
The brief: color, travel, history, and family life
The homeowners asked for a green room and a blue room, but their brief extended beyond assigning two paint colors. They wanted historical references and cultural influences that connected to their interest in travel. They also needed a home that could withstand everyday family use rather than function as a collection of delicate display rooms.

The homeowner explained the comfort standard plainly: “Beautiful pieces that [weren’t] comfortable wouldn’t have worked for our growing family.” That requirement shaped the project as much as the palette. Upholstered seating, daybeds, rugs, and practical work areas had to support reading, writing, conversation, play, and rest.
Material health was part of the family’s concern, too. The feature says comfort and non-toxic materials mattered, but it does not identify certifications, emissions testing, or independent safety evidence for any particular product. “Non-toxic” should therefore be read as a client priority reported in the article, not as a verified performance claim about the furnishings or finishes.
The homeowner also said, “I found a fellow traveler in Sasha,” describing the shared interest that made the travel references feel personal rather than themed. Bikoff identified her approach as “grandmillennial maximalist.” Her explanation is useful: “The way I do maximalism isn’t the same as when we think of the Victorian era…. It’s not a hodgepodge of old and crusty items. It’s fresh, [and] it’s about having [exactly] the kind of balance I think we accomplished here.”
How the color system works across the house
The rooms are individually expressive, yet the house remains coherent because the design repeats a few underlying moves: saturated jewel tones, large-scale pattern, contrasting periods, tactile materials, and one or two memorable objects in each space. The following overview shows how those moves were assigned to different rooms.

Room by room: the decisions that make the scheme memorable
Patio: outdoor furniture with a classical cue
The patio uses Neoclassical-style garden armchairs from Chairish around a Room & Board outdoor dining table. The pairing gives the exterior a recognizable historical note while keeping the arrangement suitable for meals and conversation. It also establishes that the maximalism is not confined to painted interior walls; the same period-mixing attitude reaches the garden.
Living room: blue as an architectural mood
The living room’s deep blue Resource Paints color gives the existing volume a strong emotional identity. An Italian Alberto Donà Murano glass Poliedri chandelier from about 1985 supplies a sculptural focal point overhead. Below it, a midcentury modular sofa sits with French bergère chairs from the 1940s, while Pierre Frey fabric adds another layer of pattern and texture.
The lesson for a painter is to treat a saturated color as an envelope rather than an accent. When walls carry the main intensity, furniture can represent different eras without making the room feel like a period set. The blue also gives the glass chandelier and lighter upholstery enough contrast to read clearly.
Green room or den: emerald with mint and antique pattern
The den answers the homeowners’ request for a green room with an emerald setting. An antique patterned Bokara Rugs rug introduces age and visual complexity underfoot. A mint Murano flush mount keeps the ceiling element lighter, while a 1980s Italian marble pedestal table and Charles Hollis Jones waterfall dining chairs bring polished, graphic forms into the room.
This is a useful example of controlling a monochromatic room through temperature and sheen. Emerald establishes depth, mint interrupts the darkness, marble reflects light, and the rug supplies irregular pattern. None of those choices requires a structural alteration.
Dining room: making one large light feel intentional
A Murano glass chandelier hangs above a reclaimed Belgian wood dining table, with House of Hackney wallpaper covering the walls. The designer said the chandelier’s size and weight posed a challenge; the feature does not publish its measurements or describe the engineering solution. That limitation is worth noting before anyone assumes a similarly large fixture can be attached to an existing ceiling without assessment.

The room works because the rough, timeworn table offsets the elaborate glass and patterned wall. The combination is historical in spirit but not imitative: each layer belongs to a different visual language.
Kitchen: leave a successful shell alone
The existing modern kitchen receives relatively little refinishing because its natural light and contemporary layout were already working. Swiveling counter stools reupholstered in Schumacher patchwork chintz provide the personal intervention. Upholstery is a strategic choice here: it changes color, pattern, and comfort without disrupting cabinetry, counters, or appliances.

The homeowners’ existing table anchors a bright work area beside the main office. The homeowner said, “We wanted to have spaces where we could write and be able to get lost in that process.” The point is not simply to create a photogenic desk; it is to give focused activity a permanent place in the house.
In the office, Pierre Frey Milo Workroom fabric with globe imagery expresses the family’s interest in travel and ideas. A mustard yellow Sixpenny daybed adds a place to sit or pause, while an antique Persian rug from Bokara Rugs keeps the room from feeling overly new. The room demonstrates how a thematic reference can remain sophisticated when it is carried by one major textile instead of repeated literal souvenirs.
Guest bathroom: a small room allowed to be bold
Gucci wallpaper gives the guest bathroom dimensional pattern and picks up violet and purple tones already present in the marble sink. Because the room is compact and separate from the main living areas, it can sustain a denser visual treatment than a large, open circulation space. Matching an existing stone color is also a practical way to make a strong wallpaper feel connected to the architecture.
Primary bedroom and closet: nature outside, play inside
The primary bedroom uses scenic park-view wallpaper and a custom live-edge bed frame to connect the room with the trees outside. The homeowner said, “I love spaces that draw on biophilic design.” Here, the connection is visual and material: the wall treatment supplies a landscape while the irregular wood edge echoes organic forms.

The closet takes a different approach. Bikoff chose hot pink as a playful color intended to spark inspiration. A secondary room can carry a more concentrated dose of color because it is experienced in shorter, more personal intervals than a shared living space.
Nursery: wonder moderated by calm
The nursery combines Pierre Frey space-themed wallpaper, a custom Sasha Bikoff daybed, a wooden Green Cradle crib, and a plush blue Stark Carpet rug. The effect is imaginative but not visually frantic: the wallpaper supplies narrative, wood keeps the room grounded, and the rug softens the floor for a child’s daily movement.
Bikoff summarized the intention as, “Kid’s spaces should ignite a sense of creativity.” The room shows how a child-focused theme can be handled through one immersive surface and a restrained group of supporting materials rather than a pile of novelty accessories.
Guest room: replacing expected furniture with a story
In the guest room, an antique Flemish Renaissance secretary in striped oak—purchased at an antique shop in New Orleans—takes the place of conventional nightstands. The decision gives visitors a functional writing surface and introduces a piece with provenance and visual authority. It also reinforces the broader strategy: historical objects are used as active parts of modern life, not as untouchable museum pieces.
What painters can learn from the project
This house is especially instructive for painters because its strongest changes come from surfaces and the relationships between them. The following principles can be adapted without copying the exact products.
Choose color by room function
Deep blue and emerald create enveloping rooms suited to gathering and retreat. A bright work area supports alertness, while the bedroom’s landscape imagery encourages a slower mood. Start with how a room is used, then select intensity, value, and finish. A color that succeeds in a brief-use closet may be exhausting in a room occupied all day.

Test saturation against natural and artificial light
Saturated paint changes substantially from daylight to evening illumination. View large samples on more than one wall and at several times of day. The article specifically notes abundant natural light in the kitchen, but it does not publish lighting measurements for the other rooms, so the exact colors cannot be transferred reliably from photographs alone.
Let one surface carry the story
Wallpaper is used in the dining room, guest bathroom, primary bedroom, and nursery, but each application has a different purpose. One room gets pattern for entertaining, another for a compact dramatic moment, another for a nature connection, and another for imaginative play. A painter can apply the same logic with a mural, a two-tone treatment, a color-drench, or a carefully chosen accent wall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBalance old and new through scale and texture
Antique rugs, vintage seating, reclaimed wood, modern marble, and contemporary upholstery coexist because they differ in texture and proportion as well as age. If every object is ornate, the room becomes visually muddy. Pair a highly patterned wall or rug with quieter planes, then use a large modern form to create breathing room.
Plan installation constraints before ordering
The dining chandelier’s size and weight became a practical challenge. Before painting around a major fixture, confirm ceiling access, mounting requirements, furniture clearances, and the order of trades. In a fast decorating schedule, a delayed custom item can affect wallpaper installation, touch-ups, and final styling.
What the feature does—and does not—establish
The Architectural Digest story documents a specific home tour, not a controlled design experiment. It reports a six-week decorating effort and a 7,000-square-foot house, but it does not provide a budget, cost per square foot, product-performance testing, comparative before-and-after measurements, or evidence that one color scheme improves family behavior. The photographs and descriptions support an account of design decisions, not universal rules.
Likewise, the named furnishings include premium, vintage, and custom pieces whose current prices, availability, certifications, and dimensions are not established in the feature. Treat them as examples of categories—Murano lighting, antique rugs, designer textiles, custom woodwork—not as a shopping list or a guarantee that the same items can be sourced today.
Why the six-week transformation works
The project succeeds because the deadline narrowed the problem to decisions with visible impact. The architecture stayed in place. Color established immediate identity, wallpaper added pattern where it could be most concentrated, and furniture mixed eras to connect the homeowners’ interests with practical family use. Comfort prevented the maximalism from becoming decorative theater, while the room-by-room themes kept the large house legible.
For anyone painting an already finished home, the takeaway is direct: a coherent palette, deliberate contrast, and a few meaningful focal pieces can produce a transformation without rebuilding the rooms. The Brooklyn brownstone did not become colorful by adding everything at once; it became colorful by assigning each surface and object a clear job.
