BTicino’s Italian Design Story: From Milan Switches to Smart Interiors

BTicino’s Italian identity spans Milan origins, a 1948 switch-and-socket launch and a product timeline that turns modular, connected controls into coordinated architectural details.

BTicino’s Italian identity is rooted in Milan, where the Bassani brothers founded Ticino Electric Switches in 1936. The company’s own history presents a clear design progression: a 1948 switch-and-socket launch, the modular Magic range in 1962, Living Classic in 1985, Axolute in 2005, Livinglight in 2011, Living Now in 2018 and Light Now in 2024. Rather than treating a switch as invisible hardware, BTicino says it works where architecture and technology meet, combining appearance, materials, function and increasingly connected controls.

Why BTicino calls its design Italian

BTicino’s Italian character starts with place and continuity. The company says it began in Milan in 1936 as Ticino Electric Switches, founded by the Bassani brothers, and launched its first switches and sockets in 1948. Its current Italian-heritage account frames the business as an industrial manufacturer that repeatedly redesigned a small but highly visible architectural component: the wall control.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

That is a company-authored history, not an independent assessment of BTicino’s influence on Italian architecture. It does, however, explain why the brand links electrical equipment with interiors rather than presenting it solely as engineering hardware. In its manifesto, BTicino describes the brand as operating “where architecture and technology meet” and says of technology: “It should integrate naturally into architecture.” BTicino’s Brand Manifesto makes that integration the central design test.

The company says its design philosophy combines aesthetics, technology, function, detail and simplicity. In practical terms, that means the visible plate, control geometry, material and finish are considered alongside the electrical mechanism and the digital functions behind it. The result is not one fixed Italian look; it is a sequence of ranges that reflect changing expectations about modularity, materials, home automation and smart-home control.

Year Milestone Design significance described by BTicino
1936 Company founded in Milan as Ticino Electric Switches Establishes the Milan origin that BTicino uses in its Italian-heritage narrative.
1948 Switches and sockets launched Begins the product history of treating everyday electrical fittings as a designed range.
1962 Magic A modular offer, according to the company’s history.
1985 Living Classic Marks a later Living-family step in the company’s chronology.
1989 Joined the Legrand Group Changes the corporate context while BTicino continues as a named brand.
2005 Axolute Presented as a combination of shapes, materials and technology.
2011 Livinglight Continues the Living line with a newer design and installation platform.
2018 Living Now Introduces a connected cover-plate range in BTicino’s account.
2024 Light Now Designed for compatibility with traditional installation systems and newer smart-home solutions, according to BTicino.

BTicino says it now has manufacturing facilities in Italy and abroad. “Italian design” therefore describes the brand’s origins and design language; it should not be read as a claim that every current product is made in Italy. The company’s profile also confirms its membership in the Legrand Group since 1989. See the official history and Italian-heritage timeline and company profile for those corporate details.

How the named ranges show design changing over time

Magic: modularity becomes a design premise

BTicino describes Magic, introduced in 1962, as a modular offer. Modularity matters because it separates the wall installation’s functional elements from the visible arrangement: switches, sockets and other controls can be organized within a coordinated system instead of selected as unrelated hardware. The source does not establish every module, finish or current-market availability, so Magic is best understood here as the historical point at which BTicino explicitly identifies modular design in its timeline.

Living Classic: a named family for residential interiors

Living Classic appears in the company chronology in 1985. BTicino’s history lists the range but does not provide a full specification in the cited material. Its importance in the timeline is that the Living name becomes a continuing platform through which the company later describes newer approaches to form, materials and technology. Do not assume a Living Classic mechanism or plate is interchangeable with a later Living range without checking the documentation for the country and installation system.

Axolute: shapes, materials and technology together

For Axolute, BTicino explicitly emphasizes the combination of shapes, materials and technology. That wording captures the brand’s move beyond a purely functional faceplate: the visible geometry and tactile finish are treated as part of the product’s technical proposition. It does not amount to an independent test of durability, electrical performance or compatibility, and the company’s description should be read as design positioning.

Livinglight: extending the Living platform

Livinglight, dated to 2011 in BTicino’s history, continues the Living family. The supplied official material does not establish a universal list of finishes, controls or countries where every Livinglight variant remains sold. For a renovation, identify the exact local catalogue number and mounting system rather than relying on the family name alone.

Living Now: the cover plate becomes a connected interface

BTicino describes Living Now, launched in 2018, as a connected cover-plate range. This is a significant conceptual shift: the plate is still an interior finish, but it also fronts connected control functions. “Connected” does not by itself specify a single wireless protocol, app, hub or wiring arrangement. Those details vary by model and region, so consult the technical sheet before combining a Living Now control with existing wiring or a third-party smart-home platform.

Light Now: a bridge between conventional and smart installations

Light Now, introduced in 2024, is described by BTicino as compatible with traditional installation systems and newer smart-home solutions. That statement makes it the clearest example in this timeline of BTicino trying to serve two renovation realities at once: an installer may need to preserve a familiar electrical system, while a homeowner may want connected control. “Compatible” is a manufacturer description, not proof that every Light Now product works with every older box, mechanism or smart-home ecosystem. Verify the regional installation guide and device list first.

What “where architecture and technology meet” means in a room

A switch occupies little area, but it sits at eye and hand level, repeats across a room and often remains visible after larger furnishings change. BTicino’s architecture-and-technology framing treats that repetition as an opportunity for coordination. A plate can echo a wall colour, door hardware or metal trim; a consistent control layout can reduce visual noise; and a connected function can be added without making the wall look like a separate electronic device.

BTicino’s manifesto supplies the principle that technology should integrate naturally into architecture. The company’s design book develops the same idea in the language of need and usability. CEO Franco Villani writes that “The roots of design at BTicino were shaped by this combination of industrial demand and Italian culture.” The book also says BTicino has “always interpreted and anticipated what people really need by designing products that offer beauty and style as well as functionality and innovation.” These are statements from BTicino’s 2025 design book, so they should be understood as the company’s interpretation of its own design practice, not as independently verified historical conclusions. Recognition reported by BTicino

On its current Italian Design page, BTicino reports the following awards and design references:

  • Three Compasso d’Oro awards, including the 1989 award for the Living residential solution and the 2001 award for the MyHome home-automation system.
  • Three iF Awards.
  • Two Red Dot Awards.
  • One CES Award.
  • A mention in the ADI Design Index.

These counts and examples are self-reported by BTicino on an undated page accessed in 2026. They indicate the kinds of design and technology recognition the company associates with its history, but they are not independent market statistics or a ranking of current switch ranges. BTicino’s Italian Design page is the source for the list.

How to evaluate BTicino switches for a real interior

If you are selecting a BTicino light switch for a renovation or new room, start with the installation rather than the finish. A beautiful plate is only useful if its mechanism, box, wiring and accessories are suitable for the building and country where it will be installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the region and electrical standard. Product names can cover different local catalogues. Use the documentation for your country and identify the rated voltage, frequency, device type and required installation box.
  2. Identify the existing system. Record the current mechanism, number of modules, box dimensions and wiring arrangement. Do not assume Magic, Living, Axolute, Livinglight, Living Now and Light Now components are interchangeable simply because they are BTicino ranges.
  3. Decide whether you need conventional or connected control. A standard switch may be the simplest replacement. A connected Living Now or Light Now configuration may require a specific mechanism, neutral-wire arrangement, gateway or compatible control ecosystem; the product sheet, not the range name, determines the requirement.
  4. Choose the visible language. Compare the plate geometry, control layout, material and finish against the room’s architecture. Treat the faceplate as a repeated interior detail, not an isolated accessory.
  5. Check the complete assembly. Confirm that mechanisms, supports, plates, covers and smart modules are listed together for the same regional system. Ask a qualified electrician to resolve uncertainty about wiring, protection and local code.
  6. Verify availability before specifying. BTicino’s official pages do not establish that every historical range is sold in every market today. Use a current local catalogue or authorized electrical distributor and match the exact model number.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The official sources establish BTicino’s Milan origin, its product milestones, its stated design philosophy, its manifesto language and its company-reported awards. They do not provide independent architectural case studies proving that BTicino shaped Italian architecture, nor do they supply market-wide sales, adoption or market-size figures. They also do not establish universal compatibility among the named ranges or current availability in every country.

That distinction is useful when reading the Italian-design claim. BTicino clearly has a documented Italian history and a long sequence of ranges that bring appearance and technology into the switch-and-socket category. Whether a particular plate is right for a project still depends on local electrical requirements, the existing installation system, the desired smart-home functions and the exact product documentation.

Why the story still matters to interior design

BTicino’s evolution shows how an ordinary electrical fitting can become part of an interior’s visual and technological system. The company’s timeline moves from the 1962 modular Magic offer through Living-family platforms, Axolute’s explicit emphasis on shapes and materials, and the connected ambitions of Living Now and Light Now. The recurring idea is not that one range suits every room. It is that the wall control can be designed as architecture: coordinated in appearance, deliberate in placement and capable of adding technology without overwhelming the space.
