Buddhist Lent, more commonly called Vassa or the Rains Retreat, is a roughly three-month observance rooted in the rainy season. In the Theravada Vinaya tradition, its central monastic practice is a commitment to reside in one place during the rains—not a universal fast or a Buddhist equivalent of Christian Lent. Lay practices and local customs vary.

What is Buddhist Lent?

Vassa means the rains retreat or rains residence. It is associated with the monsoon season in South and Southeast Asia, when travel could be difficult or hazardous. During this period, monastics traditionally stay in a designated place for study, meditation, and reflection. Nalanda Buddhist Society also describes Vassa as a three-month Theravada monastic observance (Nalanda Buddhist Society).

The Thailand Foundation describes the observance as having continued for over 2,500 years; this is its historical longevity claim, not a survey measurement (Thailand Foundation, July 17, 2024). Vassa is particularly associated with Theravada communities. Related retreats and practices elsewhere should not be assumed to follow the same calendar or rules.

When does Buddhist Lent start and end?

The Vinaya describes two possible beginnings for the rains residence. In Thanissaro Bhikkhu’s translation of the Vinaya Piṭaka, Mahāvagga, the rule says: “There are these two beginnings for the Rains: the earlier and the later. The earlier is to be entered the day after (the full moon of ) Asāḷhi, the later is to be entered a month after (the full moon of) Asāḷhi. These are the two beginnings for the Rains.” (The Buddhist Monastic Code, “Rains-residence”.)

Those are monastic calendar rules, not fixed Gregorian dates. The date shifts with the lunar calendar and local observance. For example, the Thailand Foundation’s dates of July 21 to October 17 refer specifically to 2024; they should not be reused for another year. To find dates for a particular place and year, check a local monastery or authoritative local Buddhist calendar.

What do monastics do during Vassa?

The defining commitment in the Vinaya account is residence through the rains. The commentary describes lodging arrangements and restrictions on going on tour, while also recognizing specified exceptions. It does not mean a monk can never leave under any circumstances, nor does it require that every monastic stay in a monastery if suitable lodging and the relevant communal arrangements are available (The Buddhist Monastic Code, “Rains-residence”).

How is Vassa observed in different regions?

Local names and customs make Vassa visible in different ways. In Thailand it is called Khao Phansa. The Thailand Foundation overview describes merit-making, lent candles, temporary ordination, the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, and a floral alms-offering tradition at Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi. It also identifies Waso in Myanmar, Boun Khao Phansa in Laos, and Chol Vossa in Cambodia. Theravada communities in countries including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Germany, and the United States also observe the period, though local dates and practices differ (Thailand Foundation, July 17, 2024).

These examples are an orientation, not a complete account of every community. A festival or custom associated with one region should not be treated as universal Vassa practice. When comparing observances, distinguish the local lunar-calendar dates, whether the practice concerns monastics or lay followers, the regional name and ceremonies, and the Vinaya residence commitment versus voluntary lay observance.
