Paint, wallpaper, shelves and thoughtful wall displays can make a room feel more personal without a full renovation. The best project depends on the surface, the look you want and how permanent the change should be: a painted accent wall makes a strong statement, while a small wallpaper detail or picture arrangement is easier to keep contained.
There isn’t a verified, definitive list of 27 projects behind this title. The ideas below focus on supported project types and practical variations, with guidance for choosing and carrying them out safely. Costs and material availability vary by market, so measure first and check current product instructions rather than relying on a universal budget estimate.
Choose a project by the change you want
Start with the surface and the scale of the update. A single wall or piece of furniture takes less preparation than changing an entire room. For a more architectural result, consider shelves; for a display-led update, arrange objects or artwork on the wall.
- For a bold color change: paint an accent wall or refresh a suitable piece of furniture.
- For pattern without a full-room commitment: use peel-and-stick wallpaper on a compatible surface, such as a small wall area or a flat furniture or decor surface.
- For useful display or storage: plan floating shelves around the items they will hold.
- For a low-material wall update: arrange pictures, decorative plates or shadow boxes into a deliberate display.

Paint: make a wall or furniture feel intentional
Paint an accent wall
A single painted wall can give a room a clear focal point without requiring a whole-room repaint. Choose the wall based on what you want to draw attention to, then follow the paint label for surface preparation, application and drying. Protect adjacent surfaces and use painter’s tape where a clean boundary is needed. The Home Depot’s affordable decor guide says one gallon of interior paint can cover up to 400 square feet; that is a guide estimate, not a guaranteed yield. Actual coverage depends on the product and surface, so follow the label and calculate from your measurements.
Refresh a piece of furniture
Painting suitable furniture can carry a room’s color scheme beyond the walls. Check that the paint is appropriate for the item’s material and intended use, and follow its surface-preparation instructions. The Home Depot includes painted furniture among its affordable decor ideas; the finish and durability depend on the surface and the coating selected.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper: use pattern in a contained area
Wallpaper can add a pattern behind shelves or to a smaller decor surface, but peel-and-stick products are not suitable for every wall or finish. Read the specific product information before buying and follow its instructions. Neither damage-free removal nor compatibility with every painted surface can be assumed.
Plan and apply carefully
- Check compatibility: confirm the product is intended for the surface you plan to cover. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for wall condition and preparation.
- Clean and measure: prepare the surface as directed, measure the application area and plan where seams and pattern repeats will fall.
- Set a straight starting line: lay out the first strip carefully so the pattern does not drift across the wall.
- Apply and smooth: work according to the product directions, using a smoother to press out bubbles as you go.
- Trim with care: use a suitable utility knife and take care around edges and corners.
Lowe’s covers surface checks, cleaning, measuring and application in its peel-and-stick wallpaper instructions. The Home Depot also notes that wallpaper suitability and removal depend on the product and surface in its peel-and-stick wallpaper ideas.

Floating shelves: add display space with a plan
Floating shelves can make a wall both more useful and more custom-looking, but placement and attachment matter. Decide what the shelves will hold, measure the wall and plan spacing before drilling. A shelf intended for storage needs hardware suited to both the wall and the load; do not assume that any anchor or bracket will work in every wall.
- Mark the planned shelf positions and check that the spacing suits the items you want to display or store.
- Use a stud finder to locate studs and a level to keep the layout straight.
- Fasten brackets into studs where the layout permits. If studs cannot be reached, select anchors rated and suited to the wall and intended load.
- Install the shelf following the hardware and shelf instructions, then load it only within the stated limits.
The Home Depot’s small closet makeover guide uses a stud finder and level and describes fastening brackets to studs or using anchors when studs are inaccessible. Lowe’s floating shelf guide provides a materials direction; check the specific shelf and fastener instructions for your wall and load.

Wall displays: make existing objects look composed
Pictures, decorative plates and shadow boxes can create a custom focal point without adding wallpaper or painting a whole wall. The Home Depot lists these as decor approaches in its affordable home decor guide. Before hanging, arrange the pieces on the floor or mark a paper template on the wall to test spacing and overall shape. Choose hanging hardware appropriate to each object and the wall.
Plan materials and time before you start
Build a project-specific materials list after measuring. A paint update may call for interior paint, painter’s tape and rollers; wallpaper may require peel-and-stick material, a smoother and a utility knife; shelving may need boards, brackets, a level, stud finder, screws and suitable anchors. The right quantities and hardware depend on the project and surface, so use product instructions rather than a generic shopping list.

The Home Depot’s wallpaper guide describes wallpapering as beginner difficulty and gives a general duration estimate of 2–4 hours. That estimate is not a promise for a particular room: area, pattern matching and preparation can change the time considerably. Match the update to the surface and commitment
For the most contained change, use a wall display or a small, compatible wallpaper application. Choose paint when you want a color change and are prepared to follow the coating’s surface requirements. Choose shelves when you need display or storage space and can plan secure attachment. In each case, the finish depends on preparation, product suitability and the condition of the surface—not simply on how inexpensive the materials seem.
