A distinctive semi-flush ceiling light does not require copying a catalog fixture. Kristi Linauer’s 2016 music-room project built an approximately 18-by-18-inch decorative box from casing moulding, lattice, trim, a glass diffuser and four standard lamp sockets. The design was inspired by Coleen & Company’s Daphne Semi Flush, but the build substituted woodworking and lamp hardware for a finished $2,800 fixture Linauer did not want to buy. This first part explains how the box and socket-support assembly were made, what changed during construction, and where electrical work must be handed to a qualified person.
What this project is—and what it is not
Linauer published the build on February 1, 2016, after searching for months for a light she liked in her price range. Her answer was a square, decorative semi-flush fixture with four bulbs behind a diffuser. The widest point measures about 18 by 18 inches in her finished version.

This is a historical, project-specific account rather than a tested lighting plan or a universal structural specification. The dimensions, four-socket arrangement and materials describe her fixture. A different ceiling box, diffuser, bulb type, room size or local electrical code may require different parts and engineering. Treat the measurements as a way to understand the design’s scale, not as a prescription for every music room.
How the design is arranged
- A moulding frame forms the visible perimeter.
- Scrap MDF and later real wood create corner support pieces.
- Lattice supports the glass diffuser.
- Scalloped and cabinet trim add the layered, furniture-like profile.
- A central threaded nipple and drilled wood block carry the socket assembly.
- Four keyless sockets hold the bulbs.
The result is closer to a shallow architectural ceiling box than to a conventional metal light fixture. That distinction matters when you plan weight, access for bulb changes and attachment to the ceiling.

Materials and tools used in the documented build
The following list reflects Linauer’s account. It is not a bill of materials for a new code-compliant fixture; verify current ratings, dimensions and compatibility before buying anything.

Step 1: Cut and assemble the square frame
Begin with four equal lengths of casing moulding. Linauer cut each piece to 18 inches and mitered the ends so the four sides could meet as a square. Dry-fit the pieces on a flat surface before applying adhesive. The miters need to close cleanly at all four corners; a small error at each joint becomes obvious once the frame is painted.

An 18-gauge nail gun adds temporary and long-term mechanical fastening while the glue cures. Sink nails where later trim or filler can hide them. Keep the frame flat while it sets so it does not twist into a parallelogram.
Why the frame size is useful
The four 18-inch pieces do not mean the finished fixture has only an 18-inch outside dimension. Added trim makes the widest finished point approximately 18 by 18 inches in Linauer’s version, so account for the moulding and decorative layers when marking the ceiling. Make a full-size cardboard outline if you need to check sightlines from a piano, mixing desk or listening chair.

Step 2: Build the corner supports—and reinforce them
Small corner pieces were cut from scrap MDF to support the decorative structure and provide places for screw hooks. During assembly, Linauer discovered that MDF by itself was not strong enough to hold the light’s weight. She added real wood behind the MDF before attaching the hooks.
That discovery is an important construction lesson, not a structural rating. MDF varies in thickness and density, and the actual load includes the frame, trim, diffuser, sockets, bulbs and ceiling hardware. For a new build, design a continuous load path from the fixture to the ceiling junction box or other approved support. Do not assume that glue, trim or a small MDF block can carry an overhead fixture.
Practical checks before closing the box
- Confirm that every hook or fastener enters solid material rather than only a thin decorative layer.
- Lift the partially assembled box with the diffuser removed and inspect for flex or separation.
- Leave access for the central hardware and for any future inspection permitted by your local rules.
- Keep the glass out of the assembly until the structure and ceiling attachment have been proven stable.
Step 3: Add the diffuser support and decorative trim
Lattice was installed to support a glass diffuser inside the frame. The lattice gives the diffuser a ledge while keeping the outer edge visually light. Scalloped trim and cabinet trim were then layered onto the frame to create the ornate, furniture-inspired appearance that motivated the project.
Work from the structural inside toward the visible outside: establish the diffuser ledge, secure the frame, then add decorative strips. This order keeps trim from blocking the glass or the socket block. High-temperature hot glue was used for much of the assembly, alongside wood glue. Use hot glue only where its temperature rating and long-term behavior suit the location; it should not be the sole support for a heavy overhead component.

Step 4: Prepare the central socket-support block
The center of the fixture uses a drilled wood block and a threaded nipple. Linauer drilled the block for the hardware that would hold the sockets. She used a 3/8-inch drill bit and later observed that a drill press would have helped produce a straighter central hole.
A straight hole is more than a cosmetic concern. If the nipple sits at an angle, the socket block can twist, the bulbs may not align with the diffuser and the load can pull unevenly on the surrounding wood. Clamp the block securely, mark the center from both faces and check alignment before enlarging or cleaning the hole. The documented project used a handheld drill, but a drill press is the more controllable option when available.
Step 5: Assemble the four-socket hardware
The project uses four keyless sockets. Linauer fitted them with threaded nipples, nuts, washers and 1/8-IP hickeys. In her arrangement, the hickey allowed the wires to exit through a gap instead of passing through the nipple. That is a feature of her particular hardware layout, not a wiring method to copy without checking the parts’ instructions and approvals.
Before buying replacement parts, compare thread standards, socket ratings, conductor space, bulb clearance and the weight each component is expected to carry. “Keyless” describes the socket’s switchless form; it does not by itself establish that a socket is suitable for every bulb, enclosure or ceiling application. Select bulbs whose wattage, heat output, base and dimming behavior match the socket and any control system.

Check the fit with the diffuser
Temporarily position the socket block and diffuser before final fastening. The four bulbs should sit inside the intended illuminated area without touching the glass or trim. Leave room to remove the diffuser or reach the bulbs. Linauer reported that the glass could be removed for bulb changes, but she found reaching over the top easier and less likely to result in dropping the glass. That is her handling preference, not a substitute for a safe access plan in another room.

The companion installment describes the cosmetic work that followed the structural assembly. Linauer applied wood filler, sanded the surface, caulked seams, painted the fixture white, added gold leaf and protected the finish with a clear sealer. The ceiling canopy was made from 1/2-inch plywood, and decorative chain was incorporated into the hanging detail. A glass diffuser completed the lower face.

Electrical work: stop at the boundary of the woodworking
Linauer described an unusual wiring sequence and an improvised PVC junction tube in the continuation. Those details belong to her 2016 account and should not be treated as electrical code guidance. She explicitly wrote, “If you’re not familiar with wiring, then you really need to leave this part to someone else.”

The Home Depot general installation guide, updated September 7, 2023, advises switching off the room’s circuit breaker before beginning, following the fixture instructions for ground, neutral and live connections, and consulting local electrical code when grounding questions arise. Requirements vary by location, ceiling box, fixture listing and jurisdiction.
Use this safety boundary
- Finish and inspect the woodworking with the power off and the fixture disconnected.
- Have a qualified electrician verify the ceiling box, support, grounding method and conductor compatibility.
- Use only sockets, wire, junction components and bulbs with current ratings suitable for the completed fixture.
- Follow the supplied fixture instructions and local code rather than reproducing a historical blog sequence.
- Do not energize the light until the electrician has checked strain relief, enclosure, clearances and connections.
DIY construction versus buying the inspiration style
Linauer chose to build because the finished fixture that inspired her cost $2,800 at the time, a historical figure from 2016 rather than a current quote. The comparison below identifies the decision factors without implying a present-day saving or confirming current availability.

What to verify before making your own version
- Measure the room and ceiling height so an 18-inch-wide box will not interfere with doors, tall furniture or sightlines.
- Confirm the ceiling junction box is listed and supported for the completed fixture’s actual weight.
- Choose a diffuser material and thickness that can be supported securely and removed without chipping.
- Check every socket, nipple, hickey, washer, nut, wire and bulb for matching thread, temperature and electrical ratings.
- Plan how bulbs will be replaced without putting hands or weight on the glass.
- Use real wood or another suitable structural material where hooks and fasteners carry load; do not rely on MDF simply because it is convenient.
- Ask a qualified electrician to handle all line-voltage connections and to resolve grounding questions.
As a build account, this project is most valuable for its design logic: a shallow custom box can combine ordinary moulding and lamp hardware into a room-specific centerpiece. Its most important caution is equally practical: decorative woodworking and safe electrical installation are separate jobs. Recreate the proportions and finish only after adapting the support and electrical details to your ceiling, components and local requirements.
