A Ballard-inspired spool table is a round wood top and base joined by a rope-wrapped cylindrical center. The documented DIY version uses a cut concrete tube form, plywood inserts and sisal rope; its top lifts away so the hollow center can store small pillows or folded blankets.
Follow the dimensions as a starting point, not a universal cut list. Tube diameters vary, rope coverage depends on how tightly you wrap, and the original maker’s “approximately $50” spend was a historical personal estimate rather than a current project budget.

The silhouette copies an industrial cable spool: two circular wood surfaces are separated by a narrower drum. In this version, the drum is concealed beneath closely butted turns of sisal rope. A concrete tube form supplies the cylindrical shell, while plywood inserts create broad attachment points for the top and base.
The result is best treated as an indoor side table or occasional table. The source tutorial does not publish a tested load rating, safety certification or engineering calculation, so do not use it as a seat, step stool or stand for unusually heavy equipment.

Materials and starting dimensions
The following list reflects the Domestically Designed tutorial. Buy the tube and plywood before cutting the inserts, because the source specifically advises measuring the actual inside diameter and test-fitting the circles.
| Material | Documented quantity or size | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Wood rounds | Two, 17-3/4-inch diameter | Top and bottom surfaces |
| Concrete tube form | One, 12-inch form; cut to 18 inches tall in the tutorial | Central drum |
| Plywood | Two 13-inch square pieces, cut into circles that fit the tube | Upper and lower internal inserts |
| Structural screws | Eight 1-1/2-inch screws | Securing inserts to the wood rounds |
| Adhesives | Wood glue and two tubes of Liquid Nails | Wood joints and rope/tube assembly |
| Rope | Four rolls of 3/8-inch by 50-foot sisal rope | Wrapping the tube |
| Fasteners | 1-inch staples or 3/4-inch screws | Holding the tube assembly in place, according to the tutorial’s options |
| Finish | Stain and sealer | Finishing the wood rounds |
| Feet | Four nail-on furniture glides | Protecting the floor and raising the base slightly |
| Tube-color coat | Spray paint | Reducing the visibility of gaps beneath the rope |
| Optional decoration | Stencil and craft paint | Adding a pattern or lettering to the top |
Rope consumption is not guaranteed by the roll count. A wider tube, a taller drum, looser turns or a different rope diameter can change the amount required, so purchase enough for your measured circumference and keep the turns tightly butted.

- Jigsaw for cutting plywood circles.
- Drill with a Phillips bit for the screws.
- Pneumatic stapler and compressor if you choose staples.
- Caulking gun for construction adhesive.
- A flat assembly surface, measuring tape, pencil, clamps and a sanding block are practical additions for accurate fitting and cleanup.
Work in a ventilated area when spraying the tube, applying stain or using construction adhesive. Protect the floor from overspray and drips, and allow every coating to dry according to its label before the next operation.
Build the table step by step
1. Set the finished height and cut the tube
The tutorial cuts its tube to 18 inches. Mark that height around the circumference, check the line from several positions, and cut squarely. A slanted cut will make the top rock and will create uneven rope courses. Lightly smooth the cut edge so it cannot tear the rope or catch on the plywood insert.
2. Paint the tube before wrapping
Apply spray paint to the tube in a color close to the rope or the intended finish. This coat is camouflage, not the visible decorative finish: tiny gaps can appear as you wrap, especially around a seam or where the tube is not perfectly round. Let the paint dry fully before adhesive touches it.

3. Measure and make the plywood inserts
Measure the tube’s inside diameter at more than one point. Cut each 13-inch square into a circle sized for a snug, sliding fit inside the actual tube. Test-fit both pieces. They should sit level without forcing the tube out of round; sand the edge gradually rather than removing too much material at once.

4. Attach the inserts to the wood rounds
Center one plywood circle on the underside of each 17-3/4-inch wood round. Mark the center and the screw locations, spread wood glue between mating surfaces, then drive the specified 1-1/2-inch screws. Keep screw heads below the surface so the rounds can sit flat. Wipe squeeze-out and allow the glue to cure.
5. Stain, seal and add the glides
Sand the visible faces and edges of the rounds until they are even. Apply stain in thin, consistent coats, wiping off excess as directed by the product. Seal after the stain has dried. Installing the four furniture glides on the underside of the base at evenly spaced positions helps prevent scuffs and compensates for small floor irregularities.
6. Fix the lower tube connection
Set the painted tube over the lower plywood insert and verify that it is centered on the round. Fasten the tube to the lower assembly using the tutorial’s staple or 3/4-inch screw option, taking care that fasteners do not protrude through the wood or tube wall. Check the assembly for wobble before proceeding.
7. Apply adhesive and wrap the rope
Run a manageable bead of construction adhesive on the tube, beginning near the lower edge. Press the rope into the adhesive and work around the cylinder, keeping every turn tight against the preceding turn with no intentional gaps. Continue in short sections so the adhesive does not skin over before the rope is seated. At the end of a roll, make a neat joint and start the next roll where it will be least visible.

8. Fit the upper round as a lift-off lid
After the wrapped tube and adhesive have cured, place the upper round over the top insert. The fit should be stable while remaining removable; do not permanently glue the lid if you want the storage function. Check that the rope does not push the lid off level and trim stray fibers with sharp scissors.
9. Add optional top decoration
A stencil and craft paint can personalize the top. Practice on scrap wood, mask the surrounding area and use a nearly dry brush or sponge to prevent paint bleeding beneath the stencil. Protect the completed design with a compatible clear coat if the finish manufacturer permits it.
Painting and finishing choices
Choosing the tube color
For natural sisal, a warm white, tan or muted gray spray coat disappears behind the fibers. A darker coat can create a deliberate shadow line, but it will show more strongly through any loose wrap. Use a coating labeled for the tube material and apply several light passes rather than one heavy pass that can run.
Getting an even wood finish
Wood rounds can absorb stain unevenly, particularly across end grain. Sand consistently, remove dust and test the stain on an offcut or the underside. Keep the sealer off the plywood-to-round bonding surfaces until after assembly if the adhesive instructions require bare wood for maximum grip.

Sisal has a textured, absorbent surface. Keep the finished table away from standing water and muddy footwear. A clear coating may change the rope’s color and hand, so test compatibility and appearance on a spare length before treating the entire drum.

Using the hidden storage
Lift the top straight up rather than twisting it against the rope. The cavity is suited to lightweight items such as a couple of afghans or small pillows, the use described by the tutorial. Keep contents below the insert and distribute them so the lid seats evenly. Do not store damp textiles, solvents or heat-producing devices in the enclosed space.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Indoor design versus the patio-style inspiration
A separate design roundup shows a patio-table variation with dark stain, two rope colors and a glass cover. It is an inspiration reference rather than a complete construction plan. The available descriptions support these distinctions:
| Feature | Documented rope-wrapped side table | Patio-style variation in the roundup |
|---|---|---|
| Primary setting | Presented as a side table for indoor use | Presented as a patio-table idea |
| Top surface | Round wood top that lifts off | Glass cover is mentioned |
| Rope and color treatment | 3/8-inch sisal rope with a stained and sealed wood finish | Two rope colors with dark stain |
| Storage access | Removable top exposes the hollow center | Not stated in the roundup |
| Construction details | Tube, inserts, fasteners and wrapping sequence are described | Not stated in the roundup |
| Outdoor durability or load rating | No test or rating is reported | No outdoor-exposure test or load rating is reported |
A glass cover and darker finish do not by themselves make a rope table weatherproof. If you adapt the idea outdoors, select products rated for exterior exposure, protect every wood edge and rope end, and treat the result as an untested custom piece.

Cost, fit and safety limits
The tutorial’s maker reported spending approximately $50 on her version. That amount reflects her historical purchase prices, chosen materials and build dimensions; current prices for rope, rounds, tube forms, adhesives and finishes can be substantially different. The source also notes that thicker rope was too expensive for her selected build, so changing diameter affects both appearance and budget.
- Measure the actual tube before cutting inserts; nominal dimensions are not a guarantee of fit.
- Dry-fit the top and base before adhesive work so you can correct a crooked tube early.
- Keep rope turns butted together to avoid visible tube gaps and weak spots.
- Let glue, adhesive, stain and sealer cure fully before loading the table.
- Because no tested capacity is provided, keep loads moderate and stable, and never climb or sit on the table.
Troubleshooting common build problems
The lid will not sit flat
Check for a high plywood insert, a tube cut that is not square or a rope turn that rides above its neighbors. Remove the obstruction, sand the insert edge or trim the offending fibers, then test the lid again without forcing it.

The tube shows through the rope
Small gaps usually come from loose tension or an uneven tube. Press each new course firmly against the previous one and use the pre-applied tube color to disguise pinholes. If a gap is wide, lift the affected turns while the adhesive is workable and rewrap that section.
The table rocks
Set the table on a known-flat surface and identify whether the base, glides or tube is out of square. Adjust a glide position or add a thin, inconspicuous leveling pad; do not compensate by forcing the removable top.

Cut cleanly, secure the final turn with adhesive and tuck the end where it is hidden. Allow the bond to cure before handling the wrap. A small amount of compatible clear finish on the cut end can reduce fuzz, but test it first because it may darken sisal.
What you will have when it is finished
The completed piece combines a painted, concealed tube, a tightly wrapped sisal drum and stained wood rounds with a removable top. Its practical advantage is the otherwise wasted hollow center, while its visual character comes from the rope texture and the finish choices. Build it to your measured materials, keep the lid removable, and regard the documented dimensions and cost as a starting point rather than a guaranteed specification.
