A durable timber-and-gravel garden path comes from four things done in the right order: mark a route that suits the garden, excavate and compact the ground, anchor treated timber rails with stakes, and install a gravel build-up suited to foot traffic. Timber edging keeps loose stone from spreading into lawns and beds. For a pedestrian path, a compacted crushed-stone sub-base topped with 25–40 mm of angular gravel is a robust approach described by Pavingexpert; a separate landscape-fabric-and-pea-gravel method is also documented by This Old House. Choose one complete method rather than mixing layer depths from both.
The instructions below are for a garden footpath, not a driveway or vehicle-bearing pavement. Exact excavation, drainage and timber dimensions must follow your soil, slope, climate and the products available locally.

What a timber-and-gravel path does
Gravel provides a permeable, repairable walking surface, while timber rails create a physical boundary that contains it. Without restraint, loose aggregate gradually migrates onto grass, into planting beds and around gates. Treated rails fixed to stakes give the gravel a defined edge and make future raking and topping-up manageable.
Pavingexpert’s timber-edging guidance treats timber as suitable mainly for garden and access paths. It is not the right assumption for a route carrying cars or other regular vehicle loads. If vehicles will use the route, use an engineered paving or kerb detail designed for that loading instead.

Plan the route before moving soil
Set the destination and width
Decide where the path needs to lead, how people will approach it, and where water should go. A three-foot-wide path is the example used in This Old House’s gravel-path guide; it is an example, not a universal minimum. Make the finished width large enough for the people, wheelbarrows or garden equipment that will use it, then add both timber rails within that overall layout.
Test curves with a hose
Lay a garden hose on the ground to experiment with curves, widening or tightening the line until the route feels natural. Use a taut string line for a straight run. This approach also exposes tree roots, low spots, steps and narrow pinch points before excavation. Roger Cook’s design advice in the same guide is that “A garden path should take advantage of your environment”; he suggests routing past a natural focal point such as a tree or boulder rather than treating the path as an arbitrary line.
Mark both edges and check levels
Mark both sides of the proposed path with paint, pegs or string. Walk the route in both directions. Check that doors, gates and paving transitions will still open freely after the gravel and edging are installed. Identify where runoff can leave the path, because water held against timber accelerates deterioration.
Choose one construction build-up
Published methods use different excavation depths and surface materials. The dimensions below belong to their respective methods; they are not interchangeable specifications.
| Method | Ground preparation | Base and surface | When it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compacted sub-base method | Pavingexpert describes digging off for the path and preparing a firm formation; its guide refers to about 100 mm of excavation for this type of construction. | Use 75–100 mm of well-graded crushed stone, compacted to about 75 mm, then a 25–40 mm gravel surface. Its pedestrian guidance gives a 6–15 mm particle range. | A more structured footpath where a stable aggregate foundation is wanted. | These are dimensions from Pavingexpert’s method, whose page has no clear publication date. Adjust for site levels and the selected aggregate. |
| Landscape-fabric and pea-gravel method | This Old House’s guide, updated June 4, 2026, describes removing 4–6 inches of topsoil and compacting the remaining soil. | Lay landscape fabric over the compacted soil and place 4–6 inches of pea gravel. | A straightforward example for a light garden path where rounded pea gravel is the chosen finish. | The excavation and gravel depths are specific to that example. Do not add the sub-base dimensions from the other method unless you redesign the whole build-up. |
For most timber-edged pedestrian paths, select the first method when you want a compacted foundation and a relatively thin finish layer. Select the second only when its fabric-and-deep-peagravel arrangement suits your site and walking expectations.

Materials and tools
Core materials
- Treated timber rails or gravel boards rated for the intended ground-contact exposure.
- Treated timber stakes, with additional stakes at board joints and closer support where curves place more stress on the edging.
- Exterior-grade fixings compatible with the timber and local conditions, following the product instructions.
- Well-graded crushed-stone sub-base and path gravel if using the compacted-base method.
- Landscape fabric and pea gravel only if using the separate fabric method.
Useful tools
- Shovel, lawn edger, tape measure, hammer, garden rake and handsaw, all included in the tool list for the This Old House example.
- String line, pegs or marking paint for setting the rails.
- Hand tamper or hired plate compactor for the prepared soil and crushed-stone base. Compaction equipment is particularly relevant to the sub-base method.
- Wheelbarrow, buckets and a straight board or screed for moving and checking aggregate.
How to build the path, step by step
1. Set out the finished edges
Put the hose or string line back on the approved route and mark both edges. Measure the width at several points, including curves, so the path does not accidentally narrow. Keep the guide line visible while digging and again while fixing the timber.

Cut the lawn cleanly with a spade or edger, then remove sod, roots, weeds and other organic matter. Organic material decomposes and leaves voids that become settlement. For the compacted-base approach, excavate to the depth needed for the selected compacted sub-base and surface while preserving a sensible relationship to surrounding ground. Pavingexpert’s example refers to digging off to about 100 mm. For the separate This Old House method, the stated excavation is 4–6 inches of topsoil.
Do not bury excavated roots or sod beneath the path. If you uncover soft, wet or unusually disturbed ground, remove the weak material and replace it with suitable compactable aggregate rather than assuming the nominal depth will be enough.
3. Prepare a firm formation and drainage route
Rake the exposed soil to the intended falls and compact it. The surface should not contain hollows that can hold water against the timber. There is no single drainage detail that suits every garden: clay, sand, slope, rainfall and nearby paving all change the correct solution. Aim for a route where water can disperse without washing gravel into beds or toward a building.
4. Install the timber rails and stakes
Set a taut line along each marked edge and place the treated rails against it. Rails may be gravel boards or another appropriately sized timber section; match the section to the path width, expected edge pressure and local conditions rather than assuming one board size fits every site.

Drive treated stakes on the outside of the path and fix the rails securely. Provide support at board joints so a joint cannot spring apart when the gravel is raked against it. Curves generally need closer staking than straight runs because the rail is being held in a bend. Use exterior-grade fixings and follow the timber and fastener manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the rails aligned and at a consistent finished height, allowing enough containment for the chosen gravel layer.
5. Compact the selected base
For the Pavingexpert-style build-up, spread well-graded crushed stone in manageable lifts and compact it thoroughly. The guide describes 75–100 mm of sub-base material compacted to about 75 mm. Check the compacted level against the rails before adding the finish; correcting a low or high edge now is easier than rebuilding a gravel surface.
If you selected the This Old House method instead, compact the remaining soil, lay the landscape fabric over it, and do not insert the crushed-stone layer described above unless you have deliberately redesigned the section.
6. Place and level the gravel
Spread 25–40 mm of path gravel over the compacted sub-base when using the Pavingexpert method. A 6–15 mm particle range is its guidance for pedestrian traffic. Rake the material evenly between the rails, then walk the path and inspect for thin spots, ridges and exposed base.
For the alternative fabric method, place the 4–6-inch pea-gravel layer specified by This Old House. Because this is a separate, deeper surface treatment, check door thresholds, steps and transitions before committing to it.

7. Finish transitions and clean the edges
Rake gravel away from doorways, drains and planting crowns. At a gate or paved landing, make the transition level enough to avoid a trip while retaining the edge restraint. Remove surplus stone from lawns and beds so the first rainfall cannot carry it into planting areas.
Select gravel for stability and comfort
Angular versus rounded stone
Angular particles have faces that interlock when compacted and are generally more stable underfoot than rounded gravel, according to Pavingexpert. Rounded pea gravel can roll and shift more readily, although it is the finish used in the separate This Old House example. Choose based on the walking feel you want, how much movement users can tolerate, and whether the complete build-up has been designed for that material.
Particle size
The 6–15 mm range is Pavingexpert’s pedestrian-path guidance, not an absolute rule for every aggregate or accessibility need. Very large pieces can be awkward under shoes and wheels; very small loose particles can move more readily or behave like grit. Order a sample or inspect the actual aggregate before buying enough for the route, and consider the footwear, wheelbarrows or mobility aids that will use it.
Choose and protect the timber
Use treated rails and stakes intended for exterior or ground-contact exposure, and verify that the treatment and section are suitable for the conditions where the timber will sit. The Engineer Fix installation guide, published November 21, 2025, also emphasizes ground-contact timber, appropriate stakes and exterior-grade fixings.
Timber life is variable rather than guaranteed by a single number. Pavingexpert reports that many timber edgings last about 5–10 years, while some treated timbers carry guarantees of up to 25 years. Those are source-reported ranges, not a promise for a particular board: prolonged wetness, soil contact, treatment quality, drainage and physical knocks all affect replacement timing. Keep the top and sides visible enough to inspect, and avoid designing a detail that traps standing water against the rail.

Drainage and difficult site conditions
Before spreading gravel, identify where surface water will go during heavy rain. The guidance from Pavingexpert, This Old House and Engineer Fix all point to sound preparation and avoiding prolonged pooling, but none provides a site-specific drainage design. On a flat or clay-heavy garden, you may need to alter the route, improve the formation or provide a controlled outlet; on a sloping site, prevent runoff from scouring the gravel at the low end. Do not direct water toward a building simply because that is the easiest edge to excavate.
Maintenance and repairs
Routine checks
- Rake shallow depressions and redistribute stone that has collected at bends, gates or the bottom of a slope.
- Top up areas where the gravel layer has become thin. Loose gravel naturally spreads and may require periodic topping-up, as noted by Pavingexpert.
- Pull weeds before their roots become established in the aggregate, and clear leaves so organic matter does not build up.
- Check rails, joints and stakes for movement, rot or lifted fixings after wet weather and frost.
Fix a displaced edge
Remove enough gravel to expose the rail and stake, realign the section to the guide line, replace or add a suitable stake, and refix it with an exterior-grade fastener. Refill and rake the gravel only after the edge is stable. If a rail repeatedly moves, the cause may be inadequate support on a curve, a soft formation or water pressure; adding gravel alone will not solve it.
Correct settlement
Where a hollow forms, take out the loose gravel, investigate the layer below, compact the exposed area and replace the gravel to the selected depth. Settlement caused by buried sod or uncompacted soil will recur unless the organic or weak material is removed. Keep the repair consistent with the original construction method rather than introducing a different layer system in one small patch.
When timber edging is the wrong choice
Use a different engineered edge when the route carries vehicles, must resist repeated impact from machinery, or has drainage forces that timber cannot safely contain. Timber is most defensible for a garden footpath with manageable runoff and access for periodic inspection. If the path must meet a particular accessibility performance, verify the finished surface and aggregate choice against the needs of its users rather than relying only on a generic particle-size range.
Quick Recap
Final decision checklist
- The route has been walked, measured and checked against gates, doors, trees and drainage.
- Both edges are marked, and the chosen finished width includes the timber rails.
- Sod, roots and organic soil have been removed; the formation is firm and compacted.
- You have selected either the compacted crushed-stone method or the landscape-fabric-and-pea-gravel method, not a hybrid of their uncoordinated depths.
- Treated rails, stakes and exterior-grade fixings suit ground contact and the site’s curves.
- The gravel type, shape and depth match the intended pedestrian use.
- Water will not remain pooled against the timber, and the route has a practical maintenance plan.
