A practical tabletop booth is an open-front enclosure with replaceable overspray filter media, a fan on the extraction side, and ducting that carries the exhaust to an appropriate exterior outlet. Build around the size of your models and the coating’s hazards, but do not treat a homemade arrangement as certified or proven to meet a workplace airflow requirement.
What the booth is—and what it is not
The booth’s first job is to confine overspray so it can be captured before it spreads through the room. A filter can collect paint particles, but it does not automatically remove every hazardous airborne substance, especially solvent vapor. The Paasche HSSB-22-16 manual states: “It will not remove all hazardous material from the air so caution should be taken when spraying materials that have strong vapors or harmful chemicals.” Read the coating label and safety data sheet before spraying, and follow their ventilation and respiratory-protection instructions. Paasche HSSB-22-16 manual
This project is therefore a compact overspray-control concept for hobby work, not proof that a fan, filter, or enclosure is safe for every paint, lacquer, enamel, primer, or cleaning solvent.

- Open-front enclosure: Make the interior large enough for the largest miniature or small model you will actually paint, with room to move the airbrush without striking the sides.
- Filter plane: Put replaceable spray-booth filter material between the workpiece and the extraction side. The filter should be accessible so you can inspect and replace it.
- Collection space: Leave an air-collection space or plenum behind the filter if the selected fan or booth design calls for one. Avoid blocking the entire filter face with a frame or object.
- Fan and duct: Mount the fan downstream of the filter and connect compatible ducting. Plan where the duct terminates before assembling the enclosure.
- Stable base and lighting: Keep the booth level and resistant to tipping. Use lighting that remains outside the spray path and does not introduce an ignition hazard for the materials being sprayed.

A simple build approach
1. Define the work and the exhaust route
Measure the models, turntables, and airbrush movement you need to accommodate. Then identify an exhaust destination that will not send contaminated air back through a window, door, air intake, or occupied space. If outdoor ducting is not feasible, pause and check the coating manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements rather than assuming recirculation is adequate.
2. Choose an enclosure material
Foam board is inexpensive and easy to cut, while printed brackets or adapters can help hold filters and ducting. Use a rigid, stable arrangement and protect joints from overspray. Do not copy a dimension or fan size from another design unless it matches your workpiece clearance, filter area, duct path, and chosen coating.

- Built-In Ventilation for Cleaner Air – Special vents allow connection to fans or exhaust systems, reducing paint fumes and keeping indoor spaces safe.
- Durable, Stable & Windproof Design – Includes 6 stakes and hooks for secure setup indoors or outdoors; curved 3-side design maximizes spray area.
- Pop-Up & Foldable for Easy Storage – Opens instantly without tools; folds compactly for cabinets or shelves; instructional video included for hassle-free use.
- Indoor & Outdoor Multi-Use – Perfect for miniatures, wood projects, furniture parts, art, and home DIY; efficiently contains overspray for clean painting sessions.
3. Fit the filter for replacement
Use filter media intended for spray-booth overspray capture and size it so air cannot simply bypass around the edges. Keep spare media on hand. OSHA’s ventilation guidance notes that filters load with material and that cleaning or replacement should be based on manufacturer data and signs such as increased pressure drop or reduced booth-face airflow. OSHA 1910.94 — Ventilation
4. Mount the fan after the filter
Place the fan on the clean-air side of the filter where practical, then connect ducting without sharp bends or crushed sections. A fan’s advertised free-air rating is not the airflow you will necessarily get through a loaded filter and duct. Select by usable airflow with the complete system installed, not by a bare number on a box.

- Size: The spray paint tent fully expanded size is 37.5"(L) x 29.5"(W) x 39"(H)/95cm(L) x 75cm(W) x 100cm(H), with ample interior space for painting most small to medium sized projects such as stools, crafts, small furniture, etc. At the same time, it folds down to just 13" (L) x 13" (W) x 2.2" (H) / 33cm (L) x 33cm (W) x 5.5cm (H), when you're not using it, you can place it in a warehouse or cupboard without taking up much space.
- Unique Design: The front of paint booth adopts a unique open/closed switchable design. The open mode is more convenient to operate. The closed mode ensures that the paint can only be discharged from the back vent and not from the front. You can operate through the operation port and observe the progress of your work through the visualization window. You can choose different operating modes according to your needs.
- Material: This portable paint booth adopts a 3-sided arc and back ventilation window design. This design can maintain air circulation and prevent over-spraying. The whole thing is made of 210T Polyester Cloth + TPU Transparent Polyester + 60# Galvanized Steel Wire. This material has waterproof properties and is not easy to deform or crack. It can still maintain its shape even after long time use. The good light transmittance ensures sufficient light inside the tent.
- Easy to Use: You will receive a spray paint tent, a storage bag, and a turntable. The paint booth is very easy to use, just take it out of the storage bag and it will pop-up automatically without any additional operations. After use, just fold it and put it into the storage bag for easy storage or carry. At the same time, the hooks on the top of the tent and the turntable can help you complete the spraying work better.
- Wide Application: The portable paint booth is very suitable for furniture painting and DIY projects. It can protects the surroundings from spills, residue or splashes whether you are doing your spraying job on the patio, garage, table top, lawn or floor. The ventilation window on the back ensures air circulation inside the tent and solves the problem of overspray. You can also further speed up air circulation by adding additional air filtration devices to the ventilation window.
5. Check operation before spraying
With the booth empty, confirm that the fan runs steadily, the filter is held securely, air is not escaping through large gaps, and the duct outlet does not discharge toward people or building air intakes. A strip of lightweight tissue can provide a rough visual indication of draw at the opening; it is not a compliance test or a coating-exposure measurement.
How to choose the fan, filter, and duct
| Component | Selection questions | What the available evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Inline or extraction fan | What airflow remains after the filter and duct are installed? Is the fan suitable for the coating and location? Can you tolerate its noise and footprint? | A generic consumer fan is not shown to meet any OSHA spray-booth requirement. |
| Overspray filter media | Is it intended for paint overspray, available in the required size, and affordable to replace? How will you detect loading? | A particle filter is not established to remove all solvent vapor or other hazardous material. |
| Ducting | Does its diameter match the fan connection? Can it reach an exterior outlet without leaks, crushing, or excessive bends? | The Paasche unit’s 4-inch adapter is a specification for that model, not a universal DIY recommendation. |
| Enclosure | Does it provide workpiece clearance, a stable base, an unobstructed filter face, and an accessible filter change? | No generic enclosure dimension guarantees adequate capture. |
For reference only, the Paasche HSSB-22-16 manual lists a 4-inch dryer-duct adapter and a 235 CFM rating for that named booth. Those values cannot simply be transferred to a homemade design because filter resistance, duct length, openings, and fan characteristics differ. Paasche HSSB-22-16 manual

Cost: what “cheap” really means
3D Venting LLC advertises a foam-board and 3D-printed miniature booth “for as little as $25 USD.” That is a vendor estimate dependent on local sourcing, printed parts, fans, filter media, ducting, and what you already own; it is not an independently priced complete bill of materials. 3D Venting LLC booth plans
Budget for recurring filter replacement, duct adapters, seals, and disposal as well as the enclosure and fan. A lower purchase price is not a saving if the booth cannot be exhausted outdoors or if its filter becomes too expensive to replace.

Exhaust and workplace rules
OSHA defines a spray booth as a power-ventilated structure that confines spray, vapor, and residue and directs them to an exhaust system. For covered conventional dry booths, OSHA specifies an average open-face velocity of at least 100 linear feet per minute. That is a workplace regulatory figure, not a tested target for this homemade tabletop design, and it does not make a generic fan compliant. OSHA 1910.107 — Spray finishing using flammable and combustible materials
The same standard addresses ventilation while spraying, continued exhaust long enough to clear drying emissions, and independent exhaust ducting that discharges outdoors for the relevant operations. Treat those provisions as safety context; whether they apply to your activity depends on your location, workplace, equipment, and materials.
Match controls to the coating
Water-based paint can reduce some solvent concerns, but “water-based” does not mean harmless aerosol. WorkSafe Queensland’s spray-painting guidance recommends local exhaust capture, fresh air, and suitable respiratory protection in workplace contexts, and lists water-based paint as one hazard-control option. Applicability and legal duties depend on the product and jurisdiction. WorkSafe Queensland: Spray painting and powder coating
- Read the product label and safety data sheet before setup.
- Do not spray flammable materials in or around an ignition source; the Paasche manual warns against explosive atmospheres and flammable materials.
- Use the ventilation and respiratory protection specified for the coating, not merely what the booth can physically capture.
- Keep the fan and electrical parts appropriate for the environment and coating; do not assume an ordinary motor is suitable for flammable vapors.
- Allow ventilation to continue for the period required by the coating instructions after spraying.
- Replace loaded filters promptly and handle paint-contaminated waste according to the product instructions and local rules.
When to choose a different solution
A DIY tabletop booth is most defensible for small, infrequent projects where the coating instructions permit the arrangement and a suitable exhaust route is available. Reconsider it when you need to spray large workpieces, high volumes, strong-solvent products, two-component coatings, or materials with flammable-vapor warnings. In those cases, use equipment and facilities designed for the hazard, or obtain advice from a qualified safety professional and the coating manufacturer.
