Yes—but not every old suitcase is suitable. It needs room for the speakers, amplifier, battery and wiring, and its shell must be strong enough to carry them. Mock up the layout and check speaker depth, lid clearance and component placement before cutting. Reinforce a weak case rather than trusting its walls to hold heavy drivers.
Choose a suitcase that can carry the whole system
Plan around the case and the components together. A roomy interior is not enough if the speaker magnets, amplifier or battery prevent the lid from closing, or if hinges and latches leave no safe route for the wiring.
- Measure the interior and note the locations of hinges, latches and handles.
- Make paper templates for the speaker openings and controls. Check the drivers’ mounting depth and the space behind them, not just the visible diameter.
- Mock up the amplifier, battery, crossovers and wiring. Confirm the lid closes without pinching cables and that controls and charging connections remain accessible.
- Check whether the shell can support the drivers and hardware. Plan a rigid backing board if it cannot.
In a 2013 suitcase-boombox project, Analog Devices engineer Patrick Gallagher wrote that the suitcase walls could not support the weight of all the drivers, so he added plywood backing. The lesson is practical: test the case’s strength before committing to cutouts.
Choose a simple or elaborate speaker layout
A basic build can use a stereo amplifier and two appropriately matched speakers. It takes less space and is simpler to lay out and wire than a multi-driver system. More drivers do not automatically mean better sound; the result depends on the drivers, their placement, the enclosure and how they are divided across the audio range.

For comparison, Gallagher’s 2013 project used two 8-inch woofers, two 3-inch full-range drivers, four 2-inch tweeters and passive crossovers. Make: also covered an elaborate eight-driver, bi-amplified version. Those are historical examples, not a required parts list or a current recommendation.
When combining different types of drivers, choose a crossover arrangement appropriate to the drivers and their configuration. A passive crossover was part of the documented multi-driver design; a simpler pair of speakers avoids much of that layout complexity. Before buying parts, confirm that the amplifier supports the speakers’ impedance and that its power supply is compatible with the amplifier’s specified voltage range.
Match the amplifier, battery and charger
Treat the amplifier, speakers and power source as one system. Do not copy voltage or battery figures from an older project without checking the specifications of the components you are actually using.

The Analog Devices build used a MAX98400A dual-amplifier evaluation kit. Its 2013 project description specifies 20 W per channel in stereo or 40 W in mono for that configuration. The article says that amplifier’s absolute maximum supply voltage was 28 V and that the build used 24 V. These figures describe that particular amplifier and project; they are not general targets for a suitcase boombox.
That build used two 12 V UPS lead-acid batteries and a 24 V charger. For a different build, select the battery chemistry, voltage, capacity, protection and compatible charger as a matched set. Secure the battery so it cannot shift when the suitcase is carried. Gallagher placed the battery low and toward the back to counterbalance the speakers, and made a plywood-and-pipe-strap holster to restrain it.
The same author reported about five hours of playback at maximum volume from that particular 24 V lead-acid setup, with longer runtime at more moderate listening levels. Treat that as a report about one build, not a runtime estimate for other batteries, amplifiers or listening conditions.

Reinforce the case and secure the components
Use a stiff backing board where the suitcase shell is too flexible to carry a speaker or other heavy hardware. Mount the amplifier and any crossover boards securely, and restrain the battery mechanically. Route and secure cables so they cannot snag, rattle or get caught by the lid. Leave access to the controls, charger connection and any joints that might need service.

Connect the audio input to the amplifier and the amplifier outputs to the intended speakers. Keep positive and negative speaker connections consistent. Adafruit’s 2014 portable-boombox assembly guide illustrates matching speaker leads and using heat-shrink over soldered connections; it is a useful basic wiring reference, not a power specification for a high-output suitcase build.

- Choose the fuse, wire gauge, switch ratings and battery protection for the actual components and current draw. The cited projects do not establish universal values for these parts.
- Protect exposed or soldered connections, and secure wiring against movement.
- Test the system with the case open. Check for loose connections, rattles and unexpected movement before closing it.
- Move the lid through its full range and confirm that it does not pinch cables or interfere with controls.
Decide how to connect a phone or other audio source
A wired 3.5 mm input was used in the Analog Devices project. Its author reported that one phone played unusually quietly because of the phone’s headphone-jack detection behavior, and described a 32 Ω resistor to ground at the amplifier input as a workaround for that setup. That is a project-specific account, not a universal fix; diagnose the source and amplifier combination before copying it.
Bluetooth was mentioned in the 2013 article as a possible future addition, not as a feature of the documented build. To add wireless playback, use a suitable Bluetooth receiver or an amplifier with that feature, and check its power and signal connections against the rest of the system.
