Bunting flags are decorative shapes joined along a line to dress an event space. You can buy a ready-made garland or make paper bunting with a printer, paper or light card, string or ribbon, and basic cutting tools. For a small event, the key choices are whether to make or buy, the strand’s size and pattern, and where it will hang.
What are bunting flags?
Bunting flags are individual flags or shapes spaced along string or ribbon to form a decorative strand. They are used as event decorations; the NSW Government’s Office of Sport, for example, provides a printable paper-bunting activity for an event.

“Bunting flags” can describe many patterns and materials, not just patriotic decorations. A strand in red, white, and blue is not itself the U.S. flag. U.S. flag guidance treats bunting and the flag as separate things.

How to make paper bunting
The NSW Government Office of Sport’s 2025 guide uses a printable flag template. Follow its measurements for that design rather than treating them as standard dimensions for all bunting.

- Gather supplies: paper or light card, a printer, string or ribbon, scissors or a craft knife and ruler, and a stapler.
- Print the template at actual size. Scaling the page may change the flag dimensions.
- Cut out the flags along their outlines.
- Cut the string or ribbon to the length you need; the guide suggests allowing it to dip slightly in the middle when hung.
- Arrange and attach the flags: space them along the line, then staple them in place as shown in the guide.
- Leave room at both ends to tie the strand up. For its printable design, the guide recommends approximately 30 cm at each end.
For that specific template, three flags arranged end to end measure approximately 42 cm. Flag size and spacing vary by design, so measure your intended display rather than using that figure as a general rule.

Choosing a strand for your display
- Measure the space: check the run between fixing points and allow for the strand to dip if that suits the display.
- Check the product dimensions: flag size, spacing, and total length determine how much wall or room the garland covers.
- Match the pattern to the event: compare colors and shapes with the surrounding decorations.
- Consider the setting: choose a strand intended for the place it will hang. The available official sources do not establish that a particular bunting product is weatherproof or suitable for outdoor use.
Patriotic bunting and the U.S. flag
In the United States, 4 U.S.C. § 8(d) says that blue, white, and red bunting used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping a platform front, or decoration generally should have blue above white above red. The same section says the U.S. flag should not be used as drapery. These are U.S.-specific statements about flag respect; they do not make every decorative bunting strand a U.S. flag or establish rules for other countries.

Hanging bunting safely indoors
For workplaces in England and Wales, the responsible person should consider decorations as part of the premises’ fire-risk assessment. UK Government offices-and-shops guidance advises considering fire-resistant display materials where possible and checking that display lighting does not introduce an ignition source. This is setting-specific fire-safety guidance, not a universal certification requirement for household bunting.
