The best burgundy paint is the one whose undertone, light response and finish suit your room—not simply the shade with the most attention online. The 12-color shortlist below comes from Caro Davies’s roundup for The Listed Home. It spans wine reds, plum-violets and brown-leaning reds, so compare physical samples before ordering enough paint for a room.

“Trending” here means recent editorial and designer attention, not a verified sales ranking. Burgundy appeared in 2025 color coverage, but no published market statistic establishes one universally popular burgundy in October 2026.

The 12 burgundy paint colors to shortlist

These are the twelve alternatives named by Caro Davies at The Listed Home. Exact color appearance, finish availability and surface suitability can vary by country and product line. Treat the list as a set of candidates to sample, not as interchangeable names.

Color Brand What to verify before buying
Arras Little Greene Whether the sample reads red-wine, plum or brown in your room’s light.
Etruscan Red Farrow & Ball How much warmth appears beside your floor, trim and upholstery.
Red 06 Lick Whether the depth is suitable for walls or better reserved for a smaller surface.
Tyrian Plum Annie Sloan Its blue-violet balance and the finish offered for your intended surface.
New London Burgundy Benjamin Moore The exact regional formula, sheen and coverage guidance.
Divine Damson Graham & Brown How it shifts between daylight and artificial light.
Rhubarb Paint & Paper Library Whether it harmonizes with existing pinks, greens or natural wood.
Deep Mulberry Dunelm Current availability and whether the product is intended for walls, furniture or both.
Rooibos M476 Tikkurila The market-specific color card and the finish available where you live.
Borscht Sherwin-Williams Its red-versus-brown balance on the actual wall.
Highland Peat Fenwick & Tilbrook Whether the earthy cast works with your fixed materials.
Refectory Red deVOL Current catalog status and the recommended preparation for your surface.

An indexed result for a separate Bless’er House article visibly names Benjamin Moore Bewitched and Farrow & Ball Brinjal. The complete twelve-name list on that page could not be verified, so those two names are not presented as additional entries in the table above.

What burgundy paint actually includes

Burgundy is a family rather than one fixed hue. One swatch can look like a warm wine red; another can move toward cool plum or violet; a third can contain enough brown to resemble chocolate or dried earth. Two paints called burgundy can therefore produce very different rooms.

Warm red and wine undertones

Warm burgundies carry red and often yellow or earthy notes. They tend to feel enveloping beside cream, warm white, tan leather, oak and other natural materials. In a north-facing or dim room, that warmth can prevent the color from looking icy, but too much red may feel intense across every wall.

Cool blue-violet and plum undertones

Cooler burgundies contain blue notes. They can read more like plum, aubergine or berry, especially under cool LED bulbs. They often sit comfortably with gray, charcoal, blue, crisp white and some pinks. Test carefully if your room already has purple-leaning fabrics, because the combination can become visually heavy.

Brown and chocolate undertones

Brown-leaning reds are quieter and more grounded. They can bridge burgundy with terracotta, walnut, olive or other earthy neutrals. In a room with little daylight, however, a very dark brown-red may lose its red character and appear nearly brown or black.

How do I choose the best burgundy paint colours for my home?

1. Start with undertone, not the color name

Hold candidate cards beside the room’s permanent elements: flooring, stone, cabinetry, sofa fabric, curtains and metal finishes. First decide whether you want a warm red-wine effect, a cooler plum effect or a brown-earth effect. Names such as “plum,” “red” or “peat” are useful clues, not guarantees.

2. Read the room’s orientation and light

Look at the candidate on each wall in morning, afternoon and evening light. A north-facing room commonly makes colors feel cooler and darker; strong southern light can reveal more red and make a saturated shade appear brighter. Warm incandescent or warm-white LED bulbs can pull a burgundy toward red or brown, while cooler bulbs can emphasize blue-violet notes.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

3. Match the color to the visual job

  • All four walls: Choose a shade whose depth remains comfortable when repeated across a large area. Balance it with lighter ceiling and trim colors if the room is compact.
  • One feature wall: You can use a more saturated or darker burgundy, provided adjacent walls and furnishings give the eye somewhere to rest.
  • Cabinetry or furniture: Confirm that the specific paint is formulated for the material, preparation and wear level. A wall finish is not automatically suitable for doors, shelves or frequently handled furniture.
  • Small architectural details: A deep red can emphasize a fireplace, reading nook, stair risers or built-in joinery without dominating the entire room.

4. Decide the mood before narrowing the shade

Burgundy can make a room feel intimate, theatrical and historic, but the effect depends on context. Cream and soft white create contrast; blush or dusty pink can make a red feel layered; sage and olive add an earthy counterpoint; charcoal and black produce a dramatic scheme; brass or gold accents increase the sense of richness. Use the undertone to choose the pairing: a blue-violet burgundy usually benefits from cooler companions, while a warm or brown burgundy is easier to combine with warm neutrals and wood.

What Is The Most Popular Shade of Burgundy Paint?

There is no defensible single answer. The reviewed sources do not provide a sales table, survey percentage or other independent statistic that ranks burgundy shades. Benjamin Moore’s official US burgundy page highlights Dark Burgundy 2075-10, Cranberry Cocktail 2083-20 and Bordeaux Red 1365, while explaining that burgundies can be warm with red or yellow undertones or cooler with blue notes. Those are manufacturer examples and guidance, not an independent popularity ranking.

How to sample burgundy before committing

Dark colors are especially sensitive to surrounding light and neighboring colors. Benjamin Moore recommends testing dark burgundy at home with liquid samples, peel-and-stick swatches or color chips. Use this process for any brand:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the exact product. Write down the brand, full shade name or code, country market and intended finish. Similar names are not interchangeable.
  2. Obtain a generous sample. A small chip can hide how a deep color behaves over a broad area. Use a manufacturer sample, a peel-and-stick panel or a primed sample board.
  3. Place it on more than one wall. Include the wall that receives the least light and the wall seen beside your main furniture. Keep the sample vertical; horizontal placement can reflect light differently.
  4. Observe several times. Check morning daylight, afternoon light, evening lamps and the lighting you actually use. Note whether the paint turns redder, purpler, browner or almost black.
  5. View it with fixed finishes. Put the sample beside flooring, worktops, tile, curtains and metal hardware. A burgundy that looks balanced alone may clash with a green undertone in stone or upholstery.
  6. Test the finish if sheen matters. Eggshell, satin, matt and furniture finishes reflect different amounts of light. Confirm the maker’s available sheen for the exact product rather than assuming every shade comes in every finish.
  7. Buy full quantities only after approval. Keep the sample until the project is complete so you can check that delivered tins match the selected color and finish.

Where each type of burgundy works best

Project Selection priority Useful checks
Bedroom Comfortable depth and low-glare finish View under bedside lighting; compare with bedding and wood tones.
Dining room Drama without making the room feel smaller Check the shade with daylight and pendant lighting; test against table and flooring.
Living room Compatibility with large upholstery and art Sample behind the sofa and beside the largest patterned textile.
Kitchen cabinetry Durability, cleanability and accurate sheen Verify the product’s cabinet suitability, preparation steps and recoat time.
Bathroom Response to artificial light and surrounding tile Check the color under the room’s actual bulbs and against grout and metalwork.
Furniture or built-ins Adhesion and wear resistance Confirm the substrate, primer and topcoat requirements before painting.

Why the “trend” label needs a date

The Listed Home described burgundy as a key 2025 color trend and discussed Benjamin Moore’s 2025 Cinnamon Slate announcement. A separate Homes & Gardens report described Behr’s 2025 Color of the Year, Rumors, as a burgundy favorite among designers. These are dated editorial signals, not evidence that burgundy is the top-selling color in 2026.

Patrick O’Donnell, Brand Ambassador at Farrow & Ball, told Homes & Gardens: “Reds, once the doyenne of 1980s decorating, have somewhat fallen from grace in recent years,” he says. He adds: “However, when used judiciously, they can add drama and intrigue to many interiors.” The practical lesson is to use burgundy deliberately—through the right undertone, scale and lighting—rather than treating a trend label as a substitute for testing.

Common burgundy-paint mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing from a phone screen: Digital displays vary. Fix this by using a physical sample in the room.
  • Ignoring the bulb temperature: A shade can change dramatically at night. Fix this by testing under the installed lamps.
  • Assuming every “burgundy” is equally warm: Compare a red-wine, blue-plum and brown-red sample side by side.
  • Using wall paint on cabinetry: Check the manufacturer’s surface and finish instructions first.
  • Buying by a similar name: Bewitched, Brinjal, Bordeaux Red and other names refer to specific formulas. Record the exact brand and code.
  • Painting the whole room before sampling: Dark color is expensive to correct. Sample, live with it and then calculate the quantity.

A practical decision rule

Keep a burgundy candidate only if it passes four tests: its undertone suits the room’s fixed finishes, its value remains attractive in both daylight and artificial light, the product is approved for the intended surface, and the sampled finish delivers the mood you want. If one test fails, move to the next candidate rather than trying to rescue the color with accessories.
