Cabinet Hardware Installation Cost: What to Budget When You Hire a Pro

Hiring someone to install cabinet knobs and pulls typically costs $5–$30 per piece, while Angi’s U.S. cost guide updated July 15, 2026, puts the average project at about $300. Those are planning estimates, not a guaranteed local quote. Your final price depends mainly on the number of pieces, whether the installer charges per piece or by the hour, whether existing holes can be reused, and whether the cabinets need repairs or finish work.

What the installation price usually covers

A basic cabinet-hardware job means positioning knobs or pulls, drilling or reusing holes, fastening each piece, and checking that doors and drawers operate normally. The labor estimate generally does not include the price of the knobs, pulls, screws, specialty fasteners, shipping, cabinet repairs, sanding, repainting, or refinishing unless the written quote specifically lists those items.

Angi’s figures are for the U.S. market and are secondary-source estimates. They are useful for setting a budget before you call local professionals, but they are not government statistics or a substitute for a site-specific estimate.

How the main cost estimates compare

Pricing basis Figure reported by Angi How to interpret it
Professional installation $5–$30 per piece A planning range for labor; the exact rate can vary with the trade, design, access, and scope.
Average project About $300 An average-project estimate, not a guaranteed minimum, maximum, or local quote.
Handyperson labor $50–$100 per hour Useful when a contractor bills time rather than each knob or pull.
Average installation duration About three hours A guide estimate; your job can take less or more time depending on layout and extra work.

Do not add the per-piece figure, hourly figure, and average-project figure together. They describe different ways an installer may price the same type of work.

How many pieces are you actually paying for?

Count every knob and every pull separately. A drawer with one pull is one piece; a door with one knob is another. Count pantry doors, appliance panels, island storage, bathroom vanities, and any tall cabinet doors that are part of the same request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Angi describes 20–40 pieces as a typical estimate for an average-size kitchen, but a kitchen’s size does not determine your count. Measure your own doors and drawer fronts instead of using that range as a substitute for an inventory.

Piece count Illustrative labor at $5 per piece Illustrative labor at $30 per piece
12 pieces $60 $360
20 pieces $100 $600
30 pieces $150 $900
40 pieces $200 $1,200

The table is simple multiplication of Angi’s planning range, not a quotation for any particular home. A contractor may use a minimum charge, an hourly rate, or a different per-piece price, so ask which method applies before comparing totals.

What can move your quote up or down?

Piece count and minimum charges

More pieces usually mean more measuring, drilling, fastening, and alignment checks. A small job may still carry a service minimum, travel charge, or minimum number of billable hours. Ask whether the estimate is based on the count you supplied or on a minimum charge.

Hourly billing versus per-piece billing

A handyperson may quote time at the hourly range reported by Angi, while a remodeling professional may quote each piece. Per-piece pricing can make a large, repetitive installation easier to compare. Hourly pricing may make more sense when the work includes removal, hole filling, repairs, or several different cabinet layouts. Neither model is automatically cheaper; the scope determines the result.

Existing hole spacing

If new pulls match the center-to-center spacing of the existing holes, an installer may be able to remove the old hardware and use those holes. A layout change can require new drilling and may leave old holes visible. Ask whether filling, sanding, patching, color matching, or painting those holes is included or priced separately.

Hardware design and material

The number, shape, material, finish, and ornamentation of the pieces affect both the hardware purchase and the effort needed to install them. Long pulls, delicate finishes, unusual fasteners, or custom pieces may require more careful handling. Keep the hardware purchase separate from labor when you compare bids.

Cabinet condition and finish work

Loose hinges, split wood, swollen particleboard, damaged laminate, chipped paint, and uneven surfaces can turn a straightforward installation into a repair project. Sanding, repainting, refinishing, or refacing should appear as separate line items so you can decide whether to authorize them.

Sourcing, delivery, and shipping

Clarify who purchases the hardware. If the installer sources specialty or custom pieces, ask whether shipping, delivery, taxes, returns, and missing parts are included. If you supply the hardware, confirm the quantity and screw lengths before the appointment.

  • Your preferred timing and whether the cabinets will be empty and accessible.

Tell each professional whether removal and disposal of old hardware are required. Written details prevent one quote from covering installation only while another quietly includes repairs or painting.

How to compare written estimates fairly

Request at least three local estimates, as Angi recommends, and give every bidder the same photos, count, hardware information, and requested finish. Put the proposals next to each other and compare the scope rather than only the bottom-line number.

Quote item Question to ask
Labor method Is the price per piece, hourly, or subject to a minimum?
Piece count How many knobs and pulls did you include?
Removal Will you remove old hardware and dispose of it?
Hole layout Are existing holes being reused, or are new holes included?
Old-hole treatment Are filling, sanding, patching, color matching, and painting listed separately?
Cabinet repairs What happens if the wood, laminate, or substrate will not hold a screw?
Hardware supply Who buys the pieces, screws, templates, and specialty fasteners?
Delivery and travel Are shipping, delivery, parking, or travel charges included?
Changes How will additional damage or a change in layout be approved and priced?
Completion standard What alignment, cleanup, and final inspection are included?

Ask the contractor to identify assumptions in writing. “Install cabinet hardware” can mean a very different amount of work when a home has existing holes, painted doors, or damaged cabinet fronts.

Hiring process: from first call to finished cabinets

  1. Inventory the job. Count each piece, photograph the cabinets, and record existing hole spacing.
  2. Separate installation from restoration. List removal, drilling, hole filling, repairs, sanding, painting, and refinishing as distinct tasks.
  3. Choose the hardware. Confirm dimensions, center-to-center spacing, finish, screw length, and quantity before asking for a final price.
  4. Request multiple written estimates. Send identical information to several local professionals and ask each to state the labor model and exclusions.
  5. Check the scope together. Review a sample door or drawer, especially where a new hole pattern is planned.
  6. Approve changes in writing. If a cabinet is damaged or a hole must move, obtain the added price before work continues.
  7. Inspect before final payment. Check alignment, tightness, finish damage, drawer clearance, and cleanup on every cabinet group.

Why hole spacing deserves special attention

Pulls are measured by the distance between screw centers, commonly called center-to-center spacing. A replacement pull that matches the existing spacing can cover the old holes and avoid extra patching. A different spacing creates a layout decision: keep the old holes and choose compatible hardware, or move the pull and repair the old holes.

Before drilling, have the installer mark a consistent reference point on a sample door and let you approve it. Check that the proposed position clears rails, decorative edges, neighboring doors, and drawer contents. Once several doors are drilled, correcting a visual mismatch can require filling and repainting multiple fronts.

Painting and cabinet-finish implications

New holes expose unfinished material inside the cabinet front. On painted cabinets, filled holes may need primer and a color-matched topcoat; on stained or clear-finished wood, a patch may remain visible even after careful work. Laminate and thermofoil fronts can chip if drilled with the wrong bit or excessive pressure.

When hiring help makes more sense than DIY

Hiring is sensible when you have a large piece count, expensive or delicate hardware, unfamiliar cabinet materials, a new layout, or little tolerance for visible mistakes. It can also be practical when the project includes repairs or finish work that requires separate skills.

DIY may be reasonable for a small, accessible set of cabinets with a confirmed hole pattern and inexpensive hardware. The risk is not just drilling a hole in the wrong place; it is creating a misaligned row, chipping a finish, splitting a door, or discovering that the supplied screws are the wrong length.

A drilling jig as a DIY aid

Kreg’s official listing for its Cabinet Hardware Jig Pro describes movable drill guides and a stated 1¾–12-inch center-to-center pull range. That makes a jig a relevant option when you are installing multiple knobs or pulls, but it is not a guarantee against mistakes and not necessary for every job. You still need to measure, mark, protect the finish, verify the sample location, and use the correct bit and screw length.

Common quote surprises and how to prevent them

“The price did not include my hardware.”

Ask for two totals when appropriate: labor and hardware supplied by the contractor. If you buy the pieces yourself, provide them before installation and confirm that all required screws and backplates are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The old holes cannot be reused.”

Have the installer measure the existing spacing before ordering replacement pulls. If the new design differs, request a written price for filling and finishing the old holes before drilling.

“The cabinet needs repair first.”

Ask whether the screw can hold securely in the existing material. Obtain a separate repair line item rather than allowing an open-ended hourly addition.

“Painting was assumed, but not included.”

List touch-ups, repainting, refinishing, or refacing explicitly. Confirm who supplies matching paint or stain and whether a separate visit is required.

“The job took longer than the estimate.”

Ask how the contractor handles discoveries such as hidden damage, missing fasteners, or inaccessible cabinets. Agree on an approval process for additional hours before work proceeds.

Illustrative planning scenarios

Small replacement with matching holes

A homeowner replacing 12 pulls with the same center-to-center spacing may have a comparatively simple removal-and-replacement scope. The estimate should still state whether old hardware disposal, new screws, and alignment checks are included. No drilling or painting allowance should be assumed unless written.

Typical kitchen with a new layout

A kitchen with roughly 20–40 pieces may require more planning when the new pulls do not match the old spacing. The quote should separate installation, old-hole treatment, and any cabinet-front touch-up so you can approve the visual result and the added work independently.

Damaged or previously altered cabinets

Cabinets with split edges, loose substrate, several old hole patterns, or peeling finish need a condition assessment before final pricing. A cabinetmaker or remodeling professional may be more appropriate than a basic installation-only service when the repair work is substantial.

Questions to ask before the appointment

  • What is the exact piece count in your estimate?
  • Which labor model applies, and is there a minimum charge?
  • Are removal, disposal, drilling, and cleanup included?
  • Will you reuse existing holes, and how will you handle holes that do not match?
  • Are repairs, sanding, painting, refinishing, or refacing excluded or itemized?
  • Who supplies the hardware and verifies screw lengths?
  • Are shipping, delivery, parking, or travel charges included?
  • How do you approve extra work discovered after removal?
  • What alignment and finish checks will you perform before completion?

Availability and local-rate limitations

Service availability and pricing depend on your location, the professional’s trade, access to the cabinets, and the condition of the work area. The Home Depot Pro Referral page lists cabinet hardware installation as a service category, but that listing does not establish availability in every location or a universal rate. Use local written estimates to replace national planning figures with a decision you can rely on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision guide

Use the per-piece and average-project figures as an initial budget, then replace them with bids based on your own count and cabinet condition. The best estimate is the one that clearly states the labor method, hole layout, hardware responsibility, repair and painting exclusions, and process for approving changes. If those details are missing, a low headline price can become expensive once drilling, patching, or finish work begins.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
