Calvinball is a fictional game in Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes comic strip whose players invent and change the rules during play. Its defining joke is that it cannot be played the same way twice, so there is no canonical rulebook you can follow from beginning to end. The Oxford English Dictionary entry describes the rules as made up by the players and changed ad hoc.

What is Calvinball?
Calvinball is Calvin and Hobbes’s answer to organized sport. Calvin and his tiger companion Hobbes turn an ordinary outdoor game into an improvisation in which the boundaries, objectives and penalties can change whenever one of them announces a new rule.
The humor comes from the conflict between a game’s usual promise of order and Calvin’s need to control the situation through imagination. A rule can be invented to gain an advantage, then replaced when the other player finds a way around it. The result is not a defective version of baseball, soccer or another real sport; it is a parody of rule systems themselves.
#1 Best Overall
In a 1990 strip cited by the dictionary entry, Hobbes says, “No sport is less organized than Calvinball!” Calvin answers, “New Rule!” Those lines capture the game’s operating principle: the rules exist only as long as the players accept them.
What are the rules of Calvinball?
There is no permanent, comprehensive set of official Calvinball rules. The closest thing to a universal rule is Calvin’s statement: “The only permanent rule in Calvinball is that you can’t play it the same way twice!” This is dialogue from the comic, not a verified interview statement by Watterson.
Rules are invented during the game
A Calvinball match may involve a ball, a goal, a scoring system, masks, made-up penalties or an entirely new objective. None of those elements is guaranteed to return in the next strip. Players can announce a condition, reinterpret what just happened or replace the framework altogether.

Why a fixed rulebook would miss the joke
A single official playbook would make Calvinball reproducible. Reproducibility is exactly what the comic rejects. Lists that claim to let everyone play an identical version can be entertaining, but they are adaptations rather than comic canon.

Yes—if you treat the comic’s premise as a design brief rather than a sports regulation. Before starting, agree on ordinary safety limits and a way to resolve disputes. Then let players create temporary objectives and rules, with the understanding that the game should remain different from the previous round.
- Use any harmless play area and equipment the group already has; no special Calvinball product is canonically required.
- Let players propose rules openly instead of pretending that a hidden official rulebook exists.
- Set boundaries that cannot be changed mid-game, such as no dangerous contact or entering restricted areas.
- Keep the improvisation central: changing the objective is part of the experience, not cheating.
This produces a Calvinball-inspired activity, not a reconstruction of every strip. The comics intentionally leave enough ambiguity for each group to invent its own version.
What do online “official” rules mean?
The site calvinball.org labels its page “The Official Unofficial Rules of Calvinball.” It also says the rules change each time the page loads. That makes it a playful fan-maintained adaptation: useful if you want a ready-made prompt for a real-world game, but not an authoritative publication by Bill Watterson or a definitive account of the strips.
Where does Calvinball appear?
Calvinball is a recurring idea in Calvin and Hobbes, rather than a separately published game manual. The publisher’s catalog for The Complete Calvin and Hobbes specifically says the collection includes Calvinball. Simon & Schuster’s listing for Yukon Ho! calls out early appearances.
| Source | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Andrews McMeel: The Complete Calvin and Hobbes | The complete collection includes Calvinball material. |
| Simon & Schuster: Yukon Ho! | The collection features early Calvinball appearances. |
Those listings establish collection content, not an exact debut date. A dictionary citation of a 1990 strip should not be treated as proof that Calvinball first appeared that year.

Why Calvinball matters to the strip
Calvinball turns Calvin’s imagination into a shared contest. Calvin wants freedom from adult rules, while Hobbes is willing to participate but can challenge Calvin’s authority. Their arguments over what counts as a valid move dramatize friendship, negotiation and power without turning either character into a conventional athlete.
The game also lets Watterson satirize the language of organized competition. Scores, uniforms, penalties and strategy appear just long enough to be subverted. Because the rules are unstable, the strip can make a fresh visual joke each time instead of repeating a standard match.

Be cautious with products marketed as official Calvinball or Calvin and Hobbes merchandise. TIME reported in 2015 that Watterson refused to license the strip for merchandise, quoting his explanation from The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book: “My strip is about private realities, the magic of imagination, and the specialness of certain friendships. Who would believe in the innocence of a little kid and his tiger if they cashed in on their popularity to sell overpriced knickknacks that nobody needs?”

For the comic itself, an official collection is the reliable way to read the strips in context. Current formats and availability can change, so check the publisher’s listing before following a retail link.
Bottom line
Calvinball is a fictional, deliberately unstable game: players make up rules, change them during play and never repeat exactly the same game. Fan rule lists can help people improvise their own versions, but no fixed list can be the definitive rules of Calvinball.
