Neither a mirror nor a camera shows an absolute, context-free “truth.” A conventional mirror gives you a live, three-dimensional, laterally reversed view. A photograph gives you a fixed, two-dimensional projection from a camera’s position, normally stored unreversed. If you mean “How do other people see me facing them?”, an unreversed photograph taken from ordinary conversational distance is usually the closer match in orientation and viewpoint. If you mean “What do I look like while I move and inspect myself live?”, the mirror is closer.
What “accurate” can mean
The answer changes with the criterion you care about. You might be asking about left-right orientation, facial proportions, depth and movement, color and lighting, or resemblance to the view another person gets. Each medium preserves some information and changes other information.
- Orientation: whether the image has the same left-right arrangement other people normally see.
- Perspective: how near and far facial features relate from a particular viewing position.
- Depth and time: whether you see a moving, depth-rich subject or one frozen instant on a flat surface.
- Appearance under conditions: the effects of light, expression, angle, lens, distance and image processing.

Why the mirror looks reversed
A conventional flat mirror forms an image behind its surface. The view is reversed relative to the orientation an observer expects when looking at you, which is why a part in your hair or an asymmetrical feature can appear on the opposite side from a standard photograph. It is more precise to describe this as a reversed view relative to the observer than to say a mirror performs a simple physical “left-right swap.”
You also see your mirror image repeatedly. That familiarity makes it feel like the normal version of your face. Seeing an unreversed photograph can therefore seem strange even when the photograph is closer to the orientation other people see. Kim Penberthy, a professor of research in psychiatric medicine at the University of Virginia, describes the distinction this way: “In a mirror, people see a reversed, live, 3D version of themselves, and in a photo, they see a fixed, unreversed 2D snapshot.”

Why a photograph can look unlike your mirror image
A camera records one viewpoint
A camera records light through an optical system onto a sensor, then the device or app may process the result. It does not capture an unmediated view from everywhere at once. The camera’s height, horizontal angle, tilt and distance all affect the image.
Distance changes facial perspective
When a camera is very close, the nose and other nearer features occupy a larger angular relationship to the lens than the ears or sides of the head farther away. This can make a close selfie look unlike a view from normal social distance. Moving the camera back reduces that perspective difference.

Focal length and distance must be considered together. Focal length controls field of view and how much of the scene fits in the frame; changing focal length while changing camera distance to keep similar framing changes the viewpoint and therefore the perspective relationships. A longer focal length is not a distortion cure by itself—the more distant viewpoint is the important change.

A photograph freezes one fraction of a second. A blink, half-smile, head turn or unusual posture can dominate the result even though it was not your typical live appearance. Lighting direction, exposure, color rendering, sharpening, noise reduction and other phone processing can also alter the recorded look. A mirror has its own lighting and surface imperfections, but it is not subject to a camera’s single-frame timing or computational rendering.

Is a mirror a more faithful three-dimensional view?
For live self-observation, generally yes. You can move your head, change expression and use the two eyes and motion cues available in ordinary viewing. A photograph collapses that experience into one flat projection. However, a mirror still shows only the view available from its position and lighting; it is not a complete record of how you look from every angle.
Which is closer to how other people see you?
Use an unreversed photograph made from a sensible distance and angle. Ask someone else to take it, or place the camera farther away and reframe rather than holding a wide-angle phone camera close to your face. Keep the camera near eye level for a neutral face view and use ordinary social distance when that is the comparison you want.

- Move the camera farther from your face.
- Choose a framing that leaves room to crop instead of filling the frame at arm’s length.
- Keep the lens near eye height and avoid strong upward or downward tilt.
- Use even, familiar lighting and a relaxed expression.
- Check whether the app mirrors only the preview or also flips the saved image.
These steps make the camera’s viewpoint more comparable to another person’s, but they do not create a universally “true” image. A real observer moves, sees depth and encounters you under changing light.
What an “I don’t photograph well” reaction means
Feeling that you look worse in photographs is common. The unfamiliar orientation of an unreversed image can make small asymmetries stand out because you are accustomed to the mirror version. That reaction reflects familiarity and perception; it is not proof that the photograph has exposed a hidden defect or that the mirror is physically more accurate.

The University of Virginia interview that discusses this issue presents familiarity as an explanation, not a diagnosis or a rule that applies identically to everyone. Camera distance, lens choice, lighting, expression and timing remain practical reasons a particular picture may be unflattering.
Limits of both systems
- Neither is optically perfect: the basic comparison assumes an ordinary flat mirror and a functioning camera, while real mirrors and lenses have small imperfections.
- There is no single “human-eye lens” answer: human vision uses two eyes, movement, accommodation, attention and neural processing, whereas a camera makes one projection.
- Focal length alone is not a distortion switch: perspective primarily follows viewpoint and distance, with focal length determining framing and field of view.
- Color is conditional: the light source, mirror surroundings, camera exposure and image processing can all change apparent color and contrast.
- A photograph is not automatically more objective: it can be accurate for its chosen instant and viewpoint while still being unrepresentative of your moving, three-dimensional appearance.
A practical choice by purpose
For grooming or checking a live expression
Use a mirror. It gives immediate feedback as you move and preserves the familiar orientation you use for self-recognition.
For predicting how others see your orientation
Use an unreversed image taken from ordinary viewing distance. Compare several relaxed frames rather than treating one dramatic snapshot as a definitive portrait.

Use a camera, because a photograph preserves a selected instant. Record the camera distance, angle and lighting when consistency matters.
The bottom line
A mirror is the better match for a live, depth-rich experience of yourself; a normally stored photograph from a reasonable distance is the better match for the unreversed viewpoint other people generally have. Neither medium is a complete or universally superior truth. Accuracy depends on the question, the viewpoint and the conditions under which the image was made.
