Yes, colour can influence performance on some creative tasks—but no single colour is proven to reliably make people or teams more creative or innovative. Studies have found benefits from blue, green and coloured accent lighting under different conditions. Those findings concern specific tasks and experimental setups, not a universal formula for choosing paint. If you are wondering which colour helps you think creatively, the most accurate answer is: it depends on the task, the way colour is presented and the surrounding environment.
What colour studies can—and cannot—tell us
Researchers generally measure creativity through performance on a defined task, such as generating ideas or completing a creative assessment. That is not the same as demonstrating sustained workplace innovation: developing and implementing useful new ideas in a real organization.
Colour studies also test distinct conditions. A brief glimpse of green, a blue or red accent light, a coloured surface and an unconventional room are not interchangeable interventions. Results from one cannot establish what will happen after painting an entire office or living room.
What the evidence says about colour and creative tasks
Blue and red: effects varied by task
In controlled experiments, Ravi Mehta and Rui Juliet Zhu found that red improved performance on a detail-oriented task, while blue improved performance on a creative task. Their product-design experiment included 42 participants. The authors proposed that colour influenced motivational orientation, but the result does not show that a blue room universally improves creativity. Read the study record.

Green: a brief cue before the task
Across four experiments, Stephanie Lichtenfeld, Andrew J. Elliot, Markus A. Maier and Reinhard Pekrun reported that a brief glimpse of green before a creativity task improved creative performance. The researchers used picture- and word-based assessments and matched contrast colours on properties other than hue. Participants’ self-reported mood and positive activation did not change. This is evidence about a brief visual cue, not proof that green walls have a lasting effect. Read the study record.
Coloured accent lighting: presentation matters
Olga Kombeiz and Anna Steidle studied blue and red accent lighting in work and learning areas. Among 146 participants, both colours increased strategic approach motivation compared with white accent lighting; that motivation indirectly improved creative performance. This supports the idea that context and presentation matter, but it does not prescribe a particular lamp or establish a lasting benefit in ordinary offices. Read the study record.

Colour temperature is different from hue
A 2026 study in Building and Environment examined ten correlated colour temperature (CCT) levels, from 2,000 K to 20,000 K. In its controlled experiment, the relationship between CCT and creative-task performance was nonlinear and M-shaped, with moderate settings performing better than the extremes. The authors also reported that neural data explained 85.5% of variance in creative performance in their study model. That figure describes the study’s specific sample, task and analysis; it is not a consumer-lighting accuracy rate or a result to expect in the general population. The study does not establish a universally best lamp setting. Read the study.

Colour is only one part of a workspace. In four experiments involving 1,133 participants, Manuel Sosa and co-authors found that unconventional workspaces did not always improve divergent thinking—the process of generating many distinct ideas. They could hinder it when workspace features readily suggested task solutions, consistent with cognitive anchoring. A positive effect appeared when likely solutions were unrelated to those environmental features.

How to apply the findings to a painted room
The studies do not provide a dependable paint-colour prescription. If you want to experiment with your own workspace, treat it as a personal trial rather than a proven creativity intervention:

- Choose the task first. Idea generation, design work and detail checking are different activities; do not assume one colour will suit them all.
- Change one condition at a time. If you are exploring colour, avoid simultaneously changing the lighting, room layout and task.
- Compare a limited work period under each condition. Keep the task and other surroundings as steady as practical, and note what you produce rather than relying only on how creative the room feels.
- Use reversible changes before repainting. A sample, movable colour cue or adjustable light can help you explore a condition without treating a brief study exposure as evidence for an entire painted room.
- Look for distracting or answer-revealing cues. Decor and visual features that point toward likely solutions may narrow idea generation for some tasks.
An adjustable-colour lamp can make it easier to vary visible light, but the cited studies do not validate any particular consumer product or guarantee an outcome. Paint and lighting are also different: hue on a surface is not the same intervention as coloured accent light or a change in CCT.

Blue, green, red accent lighting and different colour temperatures have each appeared in positive findings, but they were tested in different experiments. They cannot be ranked as if they were competing paint swatches in one direct comparison. The 2014 review by Andrew J. Elliot and Markus A. Maier described colour psychology as a developing field and identified boundary conditions, moderators and real-world generalizability as areas needing more work before strong practical recommendations could be made.
