Can a LoRA Put Greg Rutkowski’s Style Back Into Stable Diffusion?

A user-created LoRA brought prompts for Greg Rutkowski’s style back into reach for some Stable Diffusion users—but it was not a change to Stability AI’s original training data.

Yes—but the 2023 incident was not Stability AI putting Greg Rutkowski or his paintings back into its original training data. A Stable Diffusion user known as Lykon made a separate LoRA intended to imitate the fantasy artist’s style and shared it through Civitai. That distinction matters: changing how a base model responds to prompts is different from removing training material, and both are different from distributing a user-created adaptation.

What happened in the Rutkowski dispute?

In 2023, Greg Rutkowski and other artists asked Stability AI to remove their work from its models, according to Futurism’s August 2, 2023 report. The company later changed its product so users could not as readily request images in the style of specific artists. Futurism stressed that this change to prompt behavior was not the same as removing material from training data.

Separately, a Civitai user known as Lykon created a LoRA—a small model adaptation used with a base image-generation model—intended to reproduce Rutkowski’s style. Decrypt’s report, first published July 29, 2023 and displayed as updated September 29, 2023, and Futurism both described the adaptation as available through Civitai. Lykon said, “If he contacts me asking for removal, I’ll remove this.” That was an offer by the creator, not evidence that Rutkowski asked for removal or that the LoRA was taken down.

Decrypt also reported that Rutkowski’s name had been used in prompts more than 400,000 times, more than Picasso’s or Leonardo da Vinci’s. Decrypt did not establish the measurement method in the account, so the figure should be understood as its reported count, not an independently audited total.

How could an artist’s style be prompted again?

A base model and a LoRA are distinct components. A company can restrict how its own product responds to a prompt naming an artist without removing training material or preventing separately made adaptations from being distributed. A LoRA can modify a compatible base model’s output behavior; sharing one is therefore a different route from changing the base model itself.

Action What it changes What it does not establish
Restricting artist-name prompts in a product How that product responds to specified prompts. That the artist’s works have been removed from training data.
Removing training material The material used to train a model, if removal is carried out. That all existing model copies or adaptations have changed.
Sharing a user-created LoRA A separate adaptation that can influence outputs when used with a compatible model. That the base model’s training set or every version has changed.

The 2023 reporting supports these distinctions, but does not document every model version, dataset, or copy of the LoRA. “Put back into Stable Diffusion” is therefore shorthand for making a separate artist-style adaptation available—not proof that Rutkowski’s work was reinserted into Stability AI’s original training corpus.

What did Rutkowski say, and what does the reporting prove?

Futurism reported Rutkowski’s concern, quoting him from an earlier MIT Technology Review interview: “I probably won’t be able to find my work out there because [the internet] will be flooded with AI art,” followed by “That’s concerning.” Futurism also quoted him from the BBC saying, “All that we’ve been working on for so many years” “has been taken from us so easily with AI.” These are quotations as reproduced by Futurism, not independently verified here against the original interviews.

The reports establish that Rutkowski objected to AI use of artists’ work and that Lykon expressed willingness to remove the LoRA if asked. They do not establish that Rutkowski made that request, that the LoRA was removed, or that a court resolved this specific incident. Nor do these facts by themselves decide whether training on particular works or imitating an artistic style is lawful.

What is known about the model’s status now?

Civitai announced on May 22, 2025 that it would remove models and images depicting real-world individuals. The announcement does not confirm whether the Rutkowski-style LoRA is currently available, or whether a model imitating an artist’s style falls within the policy’s meaning of depicting that person. Stability AI’s 2025 terms address LoRAs shared through Brand Studio: they make trainers responsible for those resources and their outputs, and say shared LoRAs may be removed by the trainer or Stability AI. Those provisions apply to that service; they do not establish the rules for every Stable Diffusion model or independent host, and they do not settle the 2023 dispute. The Stability AI terms also do not answer the copyright questions raised by the incident.
