How to generate an image from a text prompt in Photoshop
To create a new image, start with a new, empty document or an empty or transparent layer.
- Create or open an empty Photoshop document.
- If needed, show the task bar with Window > Contextual Task Bar.
- Choose Generate Image.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Select an available model, if the model picker is shown.
- Choose Generate and review the result.
- Choose a variation to continue working with it in Photoshop.
You can use a reference image or style settings to guide the result where those options are available. Treat generated output as material to review and refine: check details, composition, lighting, and subject accuracy before using it.

- Open an image and select the area you want to change.
- Choose Generative Fill.
- Enter a prompt describing what to add or change, or leave it blank to fill the selection using surrounding pixels.
- Generate and review the variations.
Use a selection when the edit should be limited to a specific part of the image. Options for reference images and how they guide the result may depend on the workflow.
How to write better Photoshop prompts
A useful starting structure is:
Subject + setting or action + composition + lighting + visual style + important constraints
Describe the subject and setting, then add framing, lighting, and the intended appearance. You can also use a reference image or style settings when available. Iterate on the result rather than expecting one prompt to settle every detail.

For a particular layout, describe the viewpoint and placement, such as “front-facing” or “subject on the left.” Such instructions guide the image but do not guarantee exact placement.

Which AI models are available in Photoshop?
Photoshop offers model choices, but the list depends on the feature and release. Adobe’s October 2026 Prompt to edit documentation lists Firefly Image 5 and partner options including FLUX.2 pro, FLUX Kontext pro, Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro, and GPT Image 2. The Generate Image model list is separate and may differ.
Check the model picker in your Photoshop installation for the current options. Do not assume a model listed for one feature is available for another or that a particular model will produce better results.
Which Photoshop version do you need?
Adobe’s September 2026 desktop release information identifies Photoshop version 27.11 and notes GPT Image 2 support for generating images and making prompt-based edits. Features and model availability can change with releases, so check Adobe’s current release information and your in-app controls if an option is missing.

Is Photoshop’s AI safe for commercial use?
Adobe’s Firefly FAQ says outputs from Firefly features without a beta label can be used in commercial projects. It also says beta-feature outputs can be used commercially unless the product explicitly states otherwise. This is Adobe’s guidance for Firefly; do not assume it applies to partner models or replaces a review of the terms for your specific workflow.
For important commercial work, verify which model and feature created the image, review the applicable terms, and check the result for rights, brand, privacy, and accuracy concerns.
Can Photoshop generate readable text inside an image?
Generated lettering may not be reliable enough to use as final copy. For signs, labels, logos, or marketing graphics, generate the image without essential wording and add the text with Photoshop’s Type tools. Check spelling and legibility manually.

- Check your Photoshop version and update if needed.
- Open an empty document or use an empty or transparent layer.
