Ordinary curtains do not automatically make you sick. The more accurate concern is what may collect on or around them: settled dust and dust-mite material can aggravate allergies or asthma in susceptible people, while dampness, visible mould, mould odour, condensation or water damage around a window are stronger signs of a real indoor-air problem. Simply touching, opening or owning a curtain is not established as a cause of illness.

The direct answer: the curtain is usually not the cause
If “doing this” means keeping curtains in a room, opening them every day or touching dusty fabric, there is no established basis for saying that action itself makes everyone sick. Curtains are one of many soft furnishings where dust and dust mites may accumulate, alongside bedding, carpets and upholstered furniture. That makes them a possible source of allergen exposure, not an inherently infectious object.
The risk changes when a curtain is visibly dirty, repeatedly sheds dust, or stays damp because of condensation, a leak or another moisture problem. Dust mites and other indoor allergens can trigger symptoms in people who are sensitive to them. Persistent dampness and microbial growth are associated with respiratory and allergic effects and deserve priority over simply replacing a fabric panel.

There is no universal curtain-washing interval supported by the guidance cited here, and no clinical study establishing that ordinary curtains themselves cause a measurable illness rate. Cleaning should therefore be proportionate to the room, the fabric-care label, visible soiling and the health needs of the people using the space.
What can collect on curtains?
Dust and dust-mite material
The U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) lists curtains among places where dust mites can live. Dust mites are microscopic organisms whose body fragments and droppings can become allergens. A curtain in a bedroom may collect these materials because it is close to bedding, flooring and upholstered furniture, but its presence does not prove that a harmful concentration is present.
Household dust can also contain pollen, mould spores, pet dander and other biological particles. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes these as possible components of indoor dust, not a test result for any particular curtain. Dry handling or aggressive vacuuming can temporarily stir settled particles into the air, which is why a controlled cleaning method matters.
Who is most likely to notice symptoms?
People with allergic rhinitis, dust sensitivity or asthma may react to allergens that do not bother other occupants. Possible symptoms include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes, cough, wheeze or chest tightness. These symptoms are nonspecific: they can have many causes, and a curtain cannot diagnose the source.

A person without an allergy can handle the same fabric without developing an illness. Do not interpret a symptom that appears after opening curtains as proof that the curtain caused it; look for a repeatable pattern, other exposures and visible moisture or mould in the room.
Why dampness and mould deserve more attention
A damp or mouldy curtain is a sign to investigate the room, not merely a reason to run the fabric through a wash. Condensation on the glass, a wet sill, a plumbing or roof leak, water staining, a persistent musty smell, visible mould or fabric that never dries indicate that moisture is being added faster than it is removed.
The World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Europe states in its WHO guidelines for indoor air quality: dampness and mould (2009): “The most important means for avoiding adverse health effects is the prevention (or minimization) of persistent dampness and microbial growth on interior surfaces and in building structures.” In practical terms, laundering a curtain without fixing a leak or recurring condensation leaves the underlying exposure in place.

Putting the “34%” figure in context
The UK Health Security Agency and Centre for Climate and Health Security stated in 2025 England guidance on indoor airborne allergens that indoor bioaerosols can account for up to 34% of indoor air pollution. This is a broad statement about indoor biological particles, not a measurement of curtains, dust mites or an individual home. It should not be converted into a percentage risk from a set of drapes.
A quick inspection before you clean
Use the following checks to decide whether you are dealing with ordinary dust or a moisture problem:
- Look at the fabric and lining: note visible dust, staining, spotting, fuzzy growth or fabric that feels cool and damp.
- Inspect the window area: check the sill, frame, wall, floor and radiator for condensation, peeling paint, staining or water damage.
- Check for odour: a persistent musty smell, especially when the curtains are closed, supports investigating moisture.
- Consider the room: bedrooms and rooms with upholstered furniture can hold more soft-surface dust than a sparsely furnished space.
- Track symptoms without self-diagnosing: record when symptoms occur and whether they improve away from the room, then discuss persistent problems with a clinician.
If there is no dampness, mould or unusual odour, treat the curtains as one dust-management task rather than an emergency health hazard.
How to clean curtains without creating a bigger dust cloud
1. Read the care label first
Fabric, lining, coating, pleats and thermal backing can shrink, bleed colour or lose their finish. Follow the manufacturer’s label before washing, steaming, spot-treating or removing a lining. The available public-health guidance does not establish one washing temperature, detergent or schedule that is safe for every curtain.

2. Control dust during removal
Move slowly and avoid snapping or shaking the fabric indoors. If possible, close the room door and keep people with asthma or strong allergies out while dusty curtains are being handled. Place removable panels directly into a laundry bag or sealed container rather than carrying them through the home while loose dust is falling.
3. Use damp dusting on nearby hard surfaces
NIEHS and EPA support damp dusting for general dust control. Wipe the sill, frame, blinds, curtain rod and nearby furniture with a slightly damp cloth, rinsing it as it loads with dust. Dry dusting can redistribute particles into the air. Damp wiping is for settled dust on surfaces; it is not a treatment for mould inside building materials.
4. Vacuum with HEPA filtration
NIEHS lists a HEPA-filter vacuum as one option for reducing dust-mite exposure. Use the machine according to its instructions, keep the filter and dust container maintained, and work methodically over accessible fabric and surrounding floors. A HEPA vacuum can capture particles; it does not prove that illness will be prevented and cannot correct a leak or ongoing condensation.

Washable curtains can be cleaned according to their label. Delicate, lined, coated or permanently installed curtains may need professional cleaning or a different approach. Do not improvise with bleach, high heat or aggressive scrubbing: damage can make the fabric hold moisture or release more fibres. Cleaning removes some dust; it does not guarantee complete elimination of dust mites, which NIEHS says cannot be completely eradicated.

6. Keep humidity under control when dust mites are a concern
NIEHS lists maintaining indoor relative humidity at or below 50% with a dehumidifier or air conditioner as a general dust-mite reduction step. Use a hygrometer if you need to verify the level. Humidity control is useful only when the equipment is operated and maintained correctly; it is not a substitute for repairing a leak, drying a wet wall or remediating established mould.
7. Consider removing bedroom fabric when exposure remains troublesome
NIEHS includes removing fabric curtains and upholstered furniture from bedrooms, when possible, among dust-mite reduction options. This is an option for a household managing persistent allergy or asthma symptoms, not a requirement for every home. Smooth, washable window coverings may reduce the amount of soft material, but changing coverings alone will not solve dampness around the window.

What to do when mould is on or near the curtains
Start with the source: improve ventilation where appropriate, reduce recurring condensation, repair plumbing or roof leaks, and keep wet materials from remaining against walls or floors. If mould is on a wall, window reveal, ceiling or other building surface, the repair must address that surface and the moisture pathway. A dehumidifier can help lower humidity while repairs are arranged, but it cannot replace them.
For a small, clearly defined area, follow local public-health or housing guidance and the product instructions for any cleaning agent. Protect occupants from unnecessary exposure, especially anyone with asthma or a weakened immune system. Extensive growth, repeated return, water damage, hidden dampness or uncertainty about the source warrants qualified building or remediation advice. Avoid assuming that a musty curtain is safe because it looks clean after laundering.
When symptoms warrant medical advice
Seek medical advice for persistent cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, recurring asthma flare-ups, ongoing nasal or eye symptoms, or symptoms that interfere with sleep and normal activity. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, bluish lips or rapidly worsening symptoms. A clinician can assess asthma, allergy, infection and other possible causes; do not self-diagnose “mould illness” from a curtain.
People at higher risk from damp environments may include those with asthma or allergies and other vulnerable groups identified in local health guidance. If someone in the household is pregnant, very young, older, immunocompromised or has chronic lung disease, use a lower threshold for seeking professional advice about persistent dampness and symptoms.
Mistakes that make curtain cleaning less useful
- Shaking curtains indoors: this can redistribute settled dust instead of removing it.
- Dry-dusting a mouldy area: disturbing growth can spread particles; fix moisture and follow appropriate remediation guidance.
- Ignoring the window: a clean curtain cannot compensate for a wet sill, leaking frame or damp wall.
- Using a dehumidifier as the whole solution: humidity control does not repair structural water entry.
- Assuming every symptom is from curtains: respiratory and allergy symptoms have many possible causes.
- Using a “one-size-fits-all” wash routine: the care label and fabric construction determine what treatment is safe.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Public-health agencies support reducing dust and controlling dampness, but the guidance is general household advice rather than a curtain-specific clinical trial. It does not provide a proven curtain-washing interval, a comparative illness risk for different curtain fabrics, or a test that can tell whether one household’s curtains caused symptoms. The defensible conclusion is narrower: curtains can hold dust-mite and other allergen material, susceptible people may react to those allergens, and persistent dampness or mould around a window should be corrected promptly. In a dry, clean room, ordinary curtains are not established as a health hazard simply because they are present.
