Yes—but “one stroke” describes the way you load and move the brush, not a way to finish an entire fish in a single mark. Double-load a flat brush with two colors to make a curved, shaded body stroke or a flowing fin mark; then add separate strokes for the silhouette, eye, scales, and fin details.
What one-stroke painting can—and cannot—do for a fish
In one-stroke painting, you load opposite edges of a flat brush with different colors. As the brush moves, both colors appear in the same mark, with a soft transition between them. For a decorative fish, that can create a curved two-color body stroke or a flowing fin stroke.

A recognizable goldfish usually needs multiple marks. The brush technique gives a stroke its color transition; it does not automatically create the fish’s anatomy or fine details. Treat a one-stroke fish as a simplified adaptation, not a promise to paint the whole picture in one pass.
What you need to get started
Use a flat acrylic brush for side-by-side color loading, two paint colors, a palette, and a scrap or practice surface. For a layered goldfish, a white base coat helps orange and yellow appear bright. A sample tutorial also uses a #12 bright brush for broader areas and a #4 round brush for details; those sizes are examples, not requirements. Acrylics, canvas, and colors such as white, orange, yellow, blue, and dark brown or black are common choices, but you can adapt the palette to your design.

How to paint a goldfish with a double-loaded brush
- Practice the load. Place two colors in neighboring puddles. Touch one edge of the flat brush into the first color and the opposite edge into the second. Walk the brush gently on the palette until the colors meet in a soft seam, then try a curved stroke on scrap paper or another practice surface.
- Sketch the fish. Draw or transfer a simple fish outline onto your painting surface. A clear silhouette makes it easier to keep body strokes and fins pointed in the right direction.
- Paint a light base. Fill the body area with white and let it dry according to your paint’s directions. This underpainting helps orange and yellow read brightly.
- Build the body with curved strokes. Follow the fish’s body shape rather than pulling a straight line across it. Try orange along an edge and yellow toward the center, keeping the color transition visible instead of overworking it. Adjust the curve and width of each stroke to suit the silhouette; several strokes may be needed.
- Shape the fins lightly. Use a sparse load and let the brush skim in the direction each fin flows. Leave some of the white base showing for a translucent impression. Use longer, flowing marks for the tail.
- Add the details separately. Use a smaller round brush for the eye and scales, and thin curved marks for fin rays. These finishing strokes are part of the full fish design, not the one-stroke mark-making technique.

Choose between a quick decorative fish and a layered goldfish
