Yes. You can wear a suit in a U.S. passport photo, but it is optional—not a Department of State requirement and not a guarantee that the photo will be accepted. The main clothing restriction is that you cannot wear a uniform, clothing that looks like a uniform, or camouflage.
What to wear for a U.S. passport photo
Ordinary clothing is allowed under the U.S. Department of State’s paper-photo guidance. A suit or plain blazer is a reasonable choice if you want a polished appearance, but the State Department does not require formal clothing or prescribe a suit color.

- Choose clothing that does not block your face. For online renewal, the State Department’s digital photo instructions explain the applicable clothing and accessory restrictions.
- Do not use an AI suit overlay or other edits to change what you are wearing in the image. Paper-photo instructions require an unaltered photo, and online renewal requires an original, unedited image.
Meet the photo rules for your application route
Clothing is only one part of acceptance. Paper applications and online renewal have different photo-preparation instructions, so use the requirements for the route you are taking.
Paper passport application
For a paper application, the State Department requires a recent color photo with a clear, full-face image and a plain white or off-white background without shadows or texture. The printed photo must be 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), and the head must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm) from chin to crown. Do not alter the image with a computer, phone app, filter, or AI.

No. These instructions are for U.S. passports, and photo rules can differ by issuing country and application route. If you are applying for a passport from another country, check that country’s official passport authority rather than assuming the U.S. requirements apply.
