Canva’s Visual Suite 2.0 expansion adds far more than an image generator. Canva AI can create design drafts, images, copy, and documents from a prompt; Canva Code can build interactive experiences without conventional coding; Canva Sheets adds AI-assisted spreadsheets and charts; and Magic Studio can produce branded content in bulk.
The announcement dates to Canva Create 2025, so “getting” is now outdated wording. The important question is what these tools actually do—and where they help or create risks for painters and other visual artists.
What Canva announced
At Canva Create 2025, Canva announced Visual Suite 2.0: a major expansion that combines conversational AI, image generation, no-code interactive experiences, spreadsheets, data visualization, bulk content creation, and AI photo editing in the same design workspace. The announcement was made on April 10, 2025, so these tools are no longer merely a future promise; however, access and feature availability can still vary by account, plan, region, and rollout stage.

The larger change is strategic. Canva is moving beyond being primarily a place to arrange text, photographs, and templates. It wants one workflow in which a user can describe an idea, generate visual material, analyze information, create an interactive tool, and publish the result without moving between several specialist applications.

Canva’s launch overview describes the new tools as part of an “AI-fueled, human-led” approach: AI accelerates the first draft and repetitive work, while the user remains responsible for editing, judgment, and the final result.
Canva AI: start with an idea instead of a blank page
The centrepiece is Canva AI, a conversational assistant available from Canva’s homepage. Users can type or speak a request and ask it to create design drafts, images, copy, documents, moodboards, or campaign concepts. Canva says the assistant combines its own models with Leonardo.Ai’s Phoenix image-generation model, partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic, and Canva’s template and content library.
For a painter, that could mean beginning with a brief such as:
Create a quiet exhibition announcement for a six-piece landscape series. Use muted ochre, indigo, and warm grey, leave generous space for the title and dates, and produce square, portrait, and widescreen versions.The result is a starting point, not a finished art direction decision. The useful part is that the draft can be opened in Canva’s normal editor, where the artist can replace generated material with photographs of actual paintings, apply a Brand Kit, correct typography, and adjust the composition manually.
Canva AI’s “Design for me” workflow is aimed at producing editable designs. Its “Create an image” workflow uses Dream Lab to generate images in different styles and aspect ratios, with uploaded style references available to guide the result. Its document workflow can generate formatted copy with visuals and banners. These capabilities are explained in Canva’s official AI launch announcement.
AI image generation is part of a broader image workflow
Canva was already offering text-to-image generation through Magic Media. The 2025 expansion is significant because image generation is being folded into the same conversational workflow as layouts, documents, and campaign production.
That matters in practice. A user does not have to generate an image in one application, download it, remove its background somewhere else, resize it in a third tool, and then assemble the final post. Canva’s stated workflow is to generate an image, edit it, place it into a design, and publish it from the same platform.

The image tools are useful for:
- rough moodboards and colour explorations;
- backgrounds for promotional photographs;
- concept art before a painting begins;
- visual references for social posts and newsletters;
- temporary artwork for testing a layout;
- illustrative assets where a suitable stock image does not exist.
They should not be treated as a substitute for documenting or presenting the artist’s actual work. AI-generated images may contain incorrect details, inconsistent hands or objects, misleading textures, unwanted visual clichés, or accidental similarities to existing work. A painter using them commercially should review the output, check Canva’s current terms and the terms of any underlying image-generation service, and avoid presenting generated material as an original hand-painted work.
Canva Code turns prompts into interactive content
Canva Code is the most consequential addition for users who previously thought of Canva as a static design tool. Describe an experience—such as a quiz, pricing calculator, interactive map, mini-game, or personalised tool—and Canva Code generates it without requiring the user to write code manually.
Canva says these interactive creations can be published as shareable links or embedded into Canva Websites, Presentations, Docs, and other designs. The launch announcement says Canva Code was built with Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet model.
For an artist or gallery, possible uses include:
- a commission-price calculator based on canvas size, medium, framing, and shipping;
- a quiz that helps visitors find which collection suits their taste;
- an interactive map showing studios, galleries, or exhibition venues;
- a simple artwork catalogue with filters for medium, size, year, and availability;
- a presentation where viewers reveal details about a painting by clicking different areas.
There is an important distinction between “no-code interactive content” and a fully engineered application. Generated code can misunderstand requirements, mishandle edge cases, expose incorrect calculations, or behave poorly on mobile screens. Test every button, formula, input field, and published link before using it with customers. Canva Code is especially attractive for prototypes, presentations, educational material, and lightweight public-facing experiences; it should not automatically be assumed to replace a secure, database-backed product.

Canva Sheets brings spreadsheets into the design system
Canva Sheets is Canva’s answer to the gap between data work and visual communication. It is designed to organise information, analyse results, create charts, and connect spreadsheet content with the rest of Canva’s Visual Suite.

Useful columns might include artwork title, medium, dimensions, year, location, asking price, gallery status, image link, exhibition history, and buyer enquiry status. A second sheet could track social content, while a third could drive versions of a catalogue or exhibition campaign.

The connection between Canva Sheets and Magic Studio is one of the most practical parts of the announcement. Instead of editing a single design at a time, users can use spreadsheet rows to generate multiple personalised outputs.
Canva highlights bulk use of Magic Write, Translate, Bulk Create, and Magic Resize. For example, an artist could maintain one row per artwork and generate a set of branded assets containing the correct title, dimensions, price, description, and image for each piece. A gallery could create a product catalogue, social calendar, email series, or multilingual campaign from the same underlying data.
This is where Canva’s AI expansion becomes more than a collection of creative tricks. A structured sheet becomes the source for a repeatable publishing pipeline. The trade-off is that automation amplifies bad source data: a spelling mistake, wrong price, outdated availability flag, or missing image can be reproduced across dozens of designs. Review the sheet before running a bulk operation, then sample-check the generated outputs.
The photo editor gets point-and-click AI editing
Visual Suite 2.0 also adds a substantially upgraded AI Photo Editor. Canva describes tools for generating backgrounds, removing or replacing objects, recolouring elements, resizing objects, and blending a subject into a new scene with more natural lighting and mood.

This could help an artist create a quick promotional photograph or place a work in a mock exhibition setting. It can also help with routine production tasks such as cleaning up a background, preparing a social crop, or creating a consistent series of promotional images.
For artwork documentation, caution is essential. Do not let an AI background generator alter the colour, edges, texture, or proportions of the painting itself. A promotional mock-up can be labelled as a mock-up; the archival photograph of the artwork should remain an accurate record.
What has changed since the original 2025 announcement?
The original story described Canva as “getting” these capabilities. That wording is now dated. Canva’s 2025 announcement presented Canva AI, Canva Code, Canva Sheets, Magic Studio at scale, and the upgraded Photo Editor as Visual Suite 2.0 launches.

- Write the brief first. Define the audience, purpose, format, colours, dimensions, and the facts that must not change.
- Use Canva AI for options. Generate several layouts or moodboards, but treat them as creative direction rather than final artwork.
- Replace placeholders with real work. Upload accurate photographs or scans of the paintings and check colour, cropping, and sharpness.
- Use AI editing selectively. Generate promotional backgrounds or remove distractions, but preserve unaltered documentation for the artwork record.
- Keep structured data in Sheets. Store titles, prices, dimensions, descriptions, links, and availability in one controlled source.
- Automate only after checking the data. Use Bulk Create, Translate, and Magic Resize when the source rows are complete and consistent.
- Test interactive work. Check Canva Code projects on desktop and mobile, test calculations with edge cases, and confirm that every published link works.
- Make the final creative decision yourself. AI can widen the field of possibilities; it cannot decide what is truthful, original, or artistically right for your practice.
The real significance
Canva is not simply adding another image generator. It is trying to make the entire path from idea to public-facing communication conversational: generate the visual, write the copy, organise the data, create the interactive component, adapt the formats, and publish.
For non-designers, that could remove technical barriers. For professional designers and painters, it may reduce repetitive production work and make prototyping faster. It also creates new responsibilities around attribution, consent, originality, accuracy, accessibility, and quality control.
