Canva says the core Affinity application is now free for everyone, forever. The announcement, made on October 30, 2025, also introduced Canva’s broader “Creative Operating System”: an ecosystem linking professional desktop design with Canva’s AI, collaboration, branding, marketing, publishing, and business tools.
The important catch is that free Affinity does not make every Canva service free. Canva AI inside Affinity requires a Canva premium account, while premium content, collaboration, and business features may remain plan-dependent.

Canva described the launch as its biggest product launch to date. That is Canva’s characterization, not an independently measured claim. The announcement is best understood as two related moves: making Affinity a free professional-design tool and expanding Canva into a connected system for taking work from idea to publication and performance measurement.

What “Creative Operating System” means
Despite the name, this is not a technical operating system like Windows or macOS. It is Canva’s product and positioning umbrella for a connected creative ecosystem.

That ecosystem includes Canva’s Visual Suite, Canva AI, Affinity, brand-management tools, marketing and campaign features, Canva Sheets, Forms, Canva Code, collaboration, publishing, and business workflows. Canva’s stated goal is to connect idea generation, design, teamwork, distribution, and measurement rather than treating each as a separate application.
In practical terms, Canva is positioning Affinity as the precision layer and Canva as the easier collaboration, publishing, and business-distribution layer.
What changed in Affinity?
The redesigned Affinity brings photo editing, vector design, and page layout into one application. That replaces the previous separation among Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher.

Those are product-description claims from Canva; they should not be confused with independent testing or proof of parity with Adobe’s full professional ecosystem.
The price change is nevertheless significant. Canva says the core Affinity application is free “for everyone, forever.” The safest interpretation is that the central photo, vector, and layout tools are free under Canva’s stated policy. It does not mean every Canva feature is free, nor does “forever” constitute an independently enforceable guarantee.
What is free—and what may still cost money?

Canva says it intends to monetize premium content, collaboration, and AI-powered tools rather than charge for the core Affinity design application. That makes Affinity a potentially powerful entry point into Canva’s ecosystem—and possibly a funnel toward paid services.
How Affinity connects to Canva
Canva says users can design and refine work in Affinity, then bring it into Canva for collaboration, publishing, and scaling. That creates a useful division of labor:

However, the announcement does not establish how completely files transfer between the two products. Before relying on the connection for client work, test whether layers, masks, effects, fonts, linked assets, editable vectors, color profiles, and text remain intact. Also check whether imported work remains fully editable or becomes a flattened or partially supported representation.
The AI layer
Canva’s announcement describes an expanded AI layer across its ecosystem, including:
- Ask Canva for contextual feedback, suggestions, and edits.
- Magic Video, which Canva says can create a video from uploaded clips and a prompt.
- Canva AI Studio inside Affinity for premium-account users.
- Brand-aware generation connected to Brand Kits or Canva’s newer brand system.
Canva later described a “Canva Design Model” intended to understand layout, hierarchy, and brand logic. That is Canva’s product claim, not independent proof that it is superior to competing systems. Availability can also vary by country, platform, account, plan, and product surface.
The business side of the launch
This is not only a desktop-design announcement. Canva also introduced or highlighted business-oriented tools such as:
- Canva Grow for creating on-brand campaigns, publishing to platforms such as Meta, and tracking performance with AI.
- A new Brand system for organizing brand assets, guidelines, and contextual guidance.
- HTML design capabilities for email.
- Forms with responses flowing into Canva Sheets.
- Canva Sheets integration with Canva Code for data-powered widgets such as dashboards and calculators.
This explains why the “Creative Operating System” framing matters. Canva is trying to connect professional creation with the operational work that follows: approvals, campaigns, publishing, and measurement.
Does this replace Adobe?
Not completely—but it could replace selected Adobe workflows for some users.
Affinity now overlaps with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign in broad categories: photo editing, vector work, and page layout. That does not establish parity with Adobe’s file interchange, plugins, scripting, color-management, automation, video, motion, PDF, asset-management, or enterprise workflows.

The strategic challenge to Adobe comes from two directions. Affinity lowers the cost of professional desktop creation, while Canva targets collaboration, brand management, marketing, and publishing. Adobe remains the safer choice for teams whose work depends on Adobe-native files, plugins, advanced production, or established client and printer pipelines.

What existing Affinity customers need to know
Canva’s free-forever announcement answers the future price of the core product, but it does not by itself answer every legacy-customer question.
Existing owners should verify:
- Whether previously purchased licenses continue to activate and work.
- Whether any credit, refund, or upgrade treatment applies.
- Whether the older applications remain available and supported.
- Whether files from earlier versions open unchanged.
- Whether shortcuts, panels, file handling, or workflows change in the unified app.
- Whether future features are divided between the free application and Canva premium plans.
Do not assume that a free replacement automatically means an identical free upgrade, indefinite support for older applications, or preservation of every established workflow.
Privacy, local files, and account concerns
Canva says Affinity work is stored locally and that Affinity content is not used to train or develop Canva AI. Those are company claims and should be read alongside Canva’s current privacy policy and terms.
Local storage does not automatically answer questions about activation, telemetry, account data, cloud imports, collaboration links, optional AI features, or third-party integrations. Nor should readers assume Affinity is entirely account-free or entirely cloud-independent without checking current support documentation.
If local control matters, test the actual workflow:
- Install Affinity on a clean machine and record whether a Canva account is required.
- Disconnect from the internet after activation.
- Open, edit, save, and export a representative file.
- Check which AI and Canva-connected functions stop working offline.
- Reconnect and confirm that the file remains intact.
Who should consider switching?
Students, educators, and freelancers
Affinity’s free core removes a major upfront barrier to professional photo, vector, and layout work. It is especially attractive for static design and print-oriented projects where Adobe-specific interchange is not essential.

Canva users and small businesses
The combination can be compelling: use Affinity for precise production and Canva for quick reuse, collaboration, brand controls, publishing, and campaign work. The trade-off is greater dependence on Canva’s account and paid ecosystem for advanced connected features.
Professional designers and agencies
Try Affinity alongside Adobe before migrating. Check typography, color management, prepress, automation, plugins, client interchange, accessibility, and round-tripping. A free application is not free if migration errors consume production time or damage a client deliverable.
AI-averse creatives
The free core Affinity application and optional AI services should be treated as separate questions. You may be able to use Affinity without Canva AI, but verify account, activation, telemetry, and integration behavior against current documentation and settings.
A practical migration test
Before moving a production workflow, test five representative projects:
- A photo composite with masks, adjustments, and linked images.
- A logo or illustration using editable vectors, effects, and custom fonts.
- A multi-page document with bleeds, master elements, and placed graphics.
- A client file exchanged with Adobe software.
- A print-ready PDF checked for fonts, color profiles, bleeds, and output quality.
Keep the original files and compare exports, text editability, layer structure, fonts, color, and print output. If Canva is part of the workflow, test import, editing, sharing, and export in both directions before making it the source of truth.
The bottom line
Canva has made entry into professional desktop design dramatically cheaper by making the core Affinity application free, according to its stated policy. Its larger ambition is broader: connect precision design to AI, collaboration, branding, marketing, publishing, and measurement.
