Canva relaunched Affinity on October 30, 2025, as one desktop app combining vector design, photo editing, and page layout. Its core tools are free on macOS and Windows, but downloading requires a free Canva account, and selected Canva AI features require an eligible premium plan.
The app brings the former Designer, Photo, and Publisher workflows together as Vector, Pixel, and Layout studios. It is a capable option for many desktop design jobs, but it is not a universal Adobe replacement: account requirements, file compatibility, and missing specialist tools may matter.
What the new Affinity app is
Canva’s relaunch consolidates the main workflows of Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher in one application. Users can switch between three studios or customize their workspace:

This is a combined workflow and interface, not simply a free bundle of the three older applications. The app supports multi-page documents, master pages, shared text styles, advanced typographic controls, and formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML, according to Canva’s announcement. Format support does not guarantee that every font, linked asset, effect, mask, blend mode, or document structure will transfer perfectly.

Is Affinity really free?
Canva says the full core Affinity toolset is free “forever.” That is Canva’s product promise, not an independently guaranteed permanent policy. The practical distinction is between the free core application and optional Canva services:

Platforms and download steps
Canva launched the new desktop app for macOS and Windows on October 30, 2025. Its announcement described an iPad version as forthcoming, but does not establish a current release date or feature parity.

- Choose the download for your desktop operating system.
- Sign in with an existing Canva account or create a free one.
- Install the app and select Vector, Pixel, or Layout.
- Open an existing project or create a new document.
TechRadar’s review found that the installed app could be used offline after initial sign-in. Treat that as a finding from testing, not a guarantee for every feature: activation, downloads, updates, Canva collaboration, and AI services may require an internet connection.
What happens to existing Affinity apps and files?
The old Designer, Photo, and Publisher concepts are represented by studios in the new app. Existing users should expect a changed interface and combined workflow, even though Canva says the underlying tools and precision workflows remain familiar. Back up original files before changing an established production setup.

Supported formats can be brought into Affinity, but users migrating from Adobe or older Affinity projects should test representative documents before relying on the new app. Check:
- Fonts and text wrapping.
- Linked images and missing assets.
- Masks, transparency, effects, and blend modes.
- Color profiles and print output.
- Complex layouts and imported Adobe structures.
Keep source files and export a proof PDF before committing an important job. TechRadar’s testing found that Adobe imports generally worked, but complex projects could contain flaws.

Can it replace Adobe?
Affinity is a credible alternative for desktop work centered on image editing, vector illustration, marketing graphics, brochures, reports, posters, and other page-based documents. It may suit freelancers, students, illustrators, and publishers who want capable tools without a recurring Affinity subscription.
It is not a universal one-for-one Adobe replacement. Adobe may remain the better fit when a workflow depends on:
- Exact Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign compatibility.
- Adobe plug-ins, scripts, automation, or enterprise processes.
- Lightroom-style photo cataloging and asset management.
- Premiere Pro, After Effects, or other Adobe production tools.
- Specialized collaboration systems already built around Creative Cloud.
TechRadar describes Affinity’s Pixel studio as closer to Photoshop than Lightroom: it is primarily an image editor, not a full photo-library catalog. Photographers needing organization and raw-processing workflows may want a dedicated tool such as Capture One alongside Affinity.

How Canva integration changes the proposition
The app connects to Canva in two key ways: premium Canva users can access selected AI tools through Canva AI Studio, and Affinity projects can be exported to Canva for collaboration, scaling, or publishing. The integration gives Canva a route to connect desktop users with its wider account and collaboration tools; that is an inference from the product features, not a stated revenue forecast.
An April 2026 update from Affinity described additions beyond the original relaunch:
- Canva Brand System integration for approved colors, fonts, imagery, and brand voice.
- Capture One workflows that can open layered .af files.
- DaVinci Resolve support for native Affinity files, with automatic refresh when a file is edited.
- An Affinity AI Connector for Claude, free during its beta.
- Free access to Cavalry motion-design and 2D-animation software through a Canva account.
These later integrations extend the product, but beta features can change in availability, limits, or pricing. For video production, DaVinci Resolve is a specialized platform, not a substitute for Affinity’s vector, pixel, or layout tools.
Who should use Affinity?
Choose Affinity if you want professional desktop design tools without a recurring Affinity payment, need vector, raster, and layout capabilities in one app, work mainly on Mac or Windows, and are comfortable with a Canva account and some workflow differences from Adobe.

Be cautious if your organization prohibits third-party accounts, you need exact Adobe file fidelity, depend on plug-ins or scripts, require a mature photo catalog, or want video, motion, and 3D production in the same primary suite.
The core app costs nothing, so a low-risk approach is to install it alongside your existing software, open real projects, compare exports, and switch only after the files and workflow meet your needs.
