Canva announced its acquisition of Leonardo.Ai in July 2024 to strengthen its visual-AI capabilities, citing Leonardo’s foundational-model work and specialist team. Leonardo’s web platform continued as a separate service, while Canva later launched Dream Lab, powered by Leonardo’s Phoenix model, and in September 2026 positioned Leonardo within its connected ProSuite.
The deal linked a specialist AI-creation platform with Canva’s broader design workflow. The public announcements document that integration and positioning, but do not independently establish improved model performance, user outcomes, or financial returns.
What Canva acquired
Canva announced the acquisition on July 30, 2024, saying Leonardo had a team of 120 researchers, engineers, and designers. The companies did not disclose the financial terms. TechCrunch reported a cash-and-stock mix, citing Canva co-founder Cameron Adams; that is reported information, not a disclosed purchase price.

Canva’s announcement also cited more than 19 million Leonardo users, 190 million people supported by Canva, more than 7 billion uses of Magic Studio, and a 40% increase in monthly users of Canva AI tools that year. These are company-reported figures from 2024, not independently verified or current totals. Canva’s acquisition announcement described the deal as a way to strengthen visual-AI products and research.

Leonardo offered a web platform for creating images and videos, with model and creation controls. Canva said it would support the platform with its resources, expertise, and licensed content from Canva Creators. Those statements describe the companies’ plans, not independently measured post-acquisition results.
What changed after Canva bought Leonardo.Ai?
The clearest documented product integration was Dream Lab. In October 2024, Canva announced the text-to-image tool as powered by Leonardo’s Phoenix model, with controls for image creation and a workflow into Canva’s editor. This is a specific example of Leonardo technology reaching Canva users; it does not show that every Canva AI feature uses Leonardo or Phoenix.
In September 2026, Canva presented Leonardo as part of its connected ProSuite, alongside Affinity, Cavalry, and Flourish. Canva described a professional creative portfolio with work that can be handed off to Canva teams. This is Canva’s current public positioning, rather than evidence that all products or accounts have merged.

What Phoenix contributed
Leonardo’s Phoenix foundation model became the basis for Canva’s Dream Lab announcement. Canva described Dream Lab as a way to generate images and bring them into the design editor. The documented connection is useful to understand the acquisition’s product impact: Leonardo’s model technology supported a Canva creation workflow.
The announcements do not establish comparative model quality, productivity gains, or user satisfaction. Nor do they show that Phoenix is the only model available through Leonardo or that all Canva-generated images use it.
Will Leonardo.Ai still be separate from Canva?
Yes, the acquisition-era announcements said the Leonardo web platform would continue. Canva said Leonardo would keep developing its platform, including for business users. Leonardo also said it would remain an independent platform and that its tools, plans, and pricing would stay the same at that time. That was a July 2024 statement, not a promise about current prices or terms.

How to think about the two creative workflows
The platforms serve related but distinct parts of a creator’s work. Compare them by where creation happens, how the work moves into a finished design, and whether the task calls for specialist generation or collaborative design.
| Question | Leonardo web platform | Canva with Dream Lab |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you work? | In Leonardo’s standalone web platform | In Canva’s design environment |
| What is the documented workflow? | Specialist creation on Leonardo’s platform | Generate in Dream Lab, then continue in Canva’s editor |
| What is the likely fit? | Creators focused on a generation-first workspace | Creators who want to move generated imagery into collaborative design work |
| What should you verify? | Current tools, access, plans, and pricing | Current Dream Lab availability and Canva plan terms |
Choose based on the actual task and current product terms, rather than assuming acquisition-era plans or a particular subscription entitlement still apply.

Why the acquisition mattered to Canva
Canva’s stated rationale centered on visual-AI products and research. Leonardo brought a specialist team and foundational-model expertise, while Canva offered a broad design environment in which image-generation tools could be used as part of a larger workflow. Dream Lab is the clearest public example of that connection.
Canva’s September 2026 ProSuite announcement placed Leonardo alongside other creative products. Duncan Clark, Canva’s Managing Director EMEA and CEO Pro Design, said: “Every one of today’s launches exists because we asked professionals what they needed.” This is Canva’s stated product-development rationale, not independent evidence of user endorsement.
What to check before choosing a platform
- Start with the deliverable. If the task is to generate and explore images, review Leonardo’s current platform. If you need to turn images into layouts or collaborative design work, review Canva’s current workflow.
- Confirm current access and pricing. Do not rely on July 2024 statements about plans and pricing or assume a particular Canva subscription includes a Leonardo entitlement.
- Review current terms for your use. Check the applicable product terms, privacy information, and any rules relevant to commercial work before relying on generated content.
- Separate company claims from evidence. The announcements establish what the companies said and launched, not independent measures of performance or business impact.

Bottom line

Phoenix-powered Dream Lab shows a concrete product integration, while Leonardo’s web platform continued and Canva’s 2026 ProSuite announcement placed it in a connected creative portfolio. Treat the deal as a documented product and portfolio connection—not proof that the services are identical or that every expected benefit has been achieved.
