A carport can be structurally finished and still feel years away from done. In my case, postponing the finishing work created a more serious problem than an untidy to-do list: when I finally hired help, I remembered the wiring incorrectly. Testing showed that the eight flush-mount lights were not controlled the way I thought, so the crew revised the connections and put the lights, ceiling fan, and rear flood light on one switch.

The practical lesson is broader than this one carport: if a project may sit through several seasons, write down what each wire, switch, box, and unfinished task is supposed to do. Keep those notes where the next person can find them. This account is based on Kristi Linauer’s October 13, 2023 post, “A Lesson In Waiting Years To Finish A Project, Carport Edition.”

The project timeline
| Stage | What happened | Why it mattered later |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | I began the carport project and planned to handle several finishing jobs myself. | The wiring plan was familiar enough that I assumed I would remember it. |
| Years of delay | The remaining work stayed on my list while I put it off because the job felt substantial. | My recollection of which wire went to which switch became unreliable. |
| 2023 | I hired a crew to finish the ceiling, caulking, painting, lighting, and fan installation. | Testing exposed a mismatch between my memory and the actual circuit arrangement. |
| After testing | The crew adjusted the wiring so the eight flush-mount lights joined the switched line. | The lights, fan, and rear flood light ended up operating from one switch. |
The table separates what I intended from what the crew later found. That distinction is important: the original plan was based on my recollection, while the final arrangement followed testing at the carport.

What part did I want to do myself?
I had not intended to leave the entire carport to someone else. My plan was to complete the visible finishing work after the larger construction was in place. That list included the lighting, ceiling, post trim, caulking, and painting.
Those tasks sound manageable when listed individually. Together, they meant preparing surfaces, working overhead, fitting trim, sealing joints, and coordinating several jobs in the right order. I kept telling myself I would return to them, but the unfinished portion was large enough that I did not want to take it on.
That is how a project can become psychologically harder even when no single task changes. Every time I looked at the carport, I saw the accumulated list rather than one next action. The delay was not caused by a new design decision; it came from repeatedly deferring work I had originally expected to do myself.

Leaving a project open for years creates two kinds of uncertainty. The first is practical: materials, access, and the sequence of work may change. The second is personal: the owner’s memory of hidden details fades while confidence in that memory can remain high.
I remembered the wiring as if I had labeled it recently. I knew there were two wires at the carport and believed I could describe the role of each one. Because that recollection had been formed during the original work, I treated it as a reliable record. It was not.

The lesson is not that a long project is automatically unsafe or that every delayed renovation will develop a wiring fault. The lesson is that memory is a poor substitute for documentation when walls, ceilings, or attic spaces may be opened again years later.
Bringing in help to finish the carport
A few weeks before the account was published, I hired people to complete the outstanding work. Their scope included installing the ceiling, caulking, and painting, along with installing the lighting and fan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHaving a crew on site forced the hidden questions back into the open. The lighting could not simply be treated as a cosmetic installation because the workers needed to know which conductors were intended to control which fixtures. That was when my old mental map of the carport was tested against the actual behavior of the circuits.
This is a useful handoff point for any long-running project. The person who started the work may remember the design intent, while the person finishing it needs evidence of what is physically present. Those are not always the same thing.
What did I remember about the wiring?
I expected one wire to power eight daisy-chained flush-mount lights. I expected a second wire to power the ceiling fan and the rear flood light. The switches for the carport were inside the studio, so my understanding depended on how those two runs connected back to the interior controls.

That expected arrangement was neat and intuitive: one control for the group of lights, another for the fan and flood light. It was also wrong in the way that matters most during a handoff. I had remembered the intended result, not a verified map of the connections.

The crew tested the wires rather than relying on my explanation. One circuit energized the lights, fan, and flood light. The fan and rear flood light responded to the interior switch, but the eight flush-mount lights did not.
From those observations, I concluded that the light run was bypassing the switch and had been joined to the switched line somewhere else in the attic. That is my explanation of this particular installation, not a general description of how every carport circuit is wired. The important fact is the observed behavior: the fixtures did not respond as my remembered plan predicted.
The testing also answered why two lines could appear to behave as one circuit from the breaker while still producing different switch results. The crew was tracing how the conductors were actually connected, not simply counting the number of cables visible at the carport. The attic connection explained the mismatch between the apparent runs and the controls I expected to operate them.
How the crew changed the arrangement
The crew changed the wiring so the eight flush-mount lights were fed from the switched line. To reach the relevant connection, they removed one partial piece of beadboard. A junction box was to be added to cover the unused live wire.

After the change, all eight lights, the ceiling fan, and the rear flood light operated from one switch. That was not the two-switch layout I had originally expected, but it avoided the more frustrating outcome of leaving the flush-mount lights permanently on.
This is where the account should stop being treated as a do-it-yourself wiring diagram. The details describe what the crew found and changed in one existing installation. They do not provide a universal procedure for identifying conductors, relocating connections, or covering an unused live wire. Those decisions belong to a qualified electrician who can inspect the actual circuit, enclosure, and local requirements.
What the one-switch result solved—and what it limited
The single-switch arrangement solved the immediate control problem: the flush-mount lights were no longer stuck outside the switch behavior I wanted. It also gave me a simpler operating pattern for the carport, because one switch now controlled the complete group of fixtures and the fan.
There was a trade-off. With the fan on the same circuit, I said I could not put the flush-mount lights on a dimmer in this arrangement. That is a description of my installation and its controls, not a universal rule about every fan-and-light combination. A different design, equipment selection, or wiring arrangement may have different options, and those choices should be evaluated for the specific installation.

The documentation lesson I should have followed from the start
My main mistake was relying on a five-year-old memory instead of notes. A short record made when the wires were accessible would have been more useful than a confident explanation years later.

Record the design intent
Write down what each run is supposed to serve, which switch is intended to control it, and whether the plan is temporary or final. Use plain labels such as “flush-mount lights,” “fan,” and “rear flood light,” rather than relying on a color code that may be unclear to someone else.
Record what was actually found
If the physical installation differs from the plan, record the difference immediately. Note which fixtures responded during testing and which did not. A dated note that says “observed during test” is more valuable than an undated assumption about what a wire should do.
Photograph before surfaces are closed
Take wide and close photographs of accessible boxes, cable routes, and junction locations before beadboard, drywall, or trim hides them. Include a ruler or other fixed reference when scale matters, and save the original files rather than only compressed copies in a messaging app.
Keep the record where the next worker will look
Store the notes and photographs in more than one accessible place: a project folder, a labeled cloud directory, or a printed sheet kept with the home’s maintenance records. The point is not sophisticated software. The point is that a future helper should not have to guess which folder contains the information.
A simple long-running project record
| Record item | What to include | How it helps after a delay |
|---|---|---|
| Project dates | Start date, pauses, major work sessions, and completion date. | Shows how old the information is and when it should be rechecked. |
| Fixture map | Names and locations of lights, fans, outlets, and controls. | Gives a finisher a shared vocabulary for the space. |
| Switch behavior | What each switch is intended to control and what it actually controlled during testing. | Separates design intent from observed operation. |
| Hidden connections | Photographs and notes for accessible junctions or attic routes. | Reduces destructive searching when surfaces are closed. |
| Open questions | Anything not verified, including an unused or unexplained wire. | Prevents an assumption from being mistaken for a confirmed fact. |
| Handoff notes | Names of contractors, dates of changes, and the location of supporting photos. | Lets the next person understand who changed what and when. |
For electrical work, the record is supplementary, not a substitute for inspection. A note can preserve history, but it cannot confirm that an installation is safe, code-compliant, or suitable for a new fixture.
If you reopen a project after years
- Start with the record, not your memory. Gather plans, photographs, invoices, labels, and any notes made when the work was fresh.
- List assumptions separately from observations. Mark each item as planned, verified, or unknown so a helper can see where confirmation is needed.
- Explain the intended end state. Describe which fixtures and controls you want without telling a professional that a hidden connection “must” be a certain way.
- Have qualified help test concealed systems. Wiring, structural connections, and other hidden work can require site-specific inspection and local-code knowledge.
- Update the record after every change. Add the date, the person who performed the work, photographs of newly accessible areas, and the resulting control behavior.
- Close the project with a handoff packet. Keep the final fixture map and photographs with the home’s permanent maintenance information, not only in a temporary renovation notebook.
What this carport taught me
Finishing a delayed project is not only about finding time for the remaining labor. It is also about rebuilding a trustworthy picture of work that may be hidden behind a ceiling or inside an attic. My remembered wiring plan sounded coherent until the crew tested it. The test results, not my confidence, determined what needed to change.
The carport now has a workable one-switch arrangement for its eight flush-mount lights, fan, and rear flood light. The more durable improvement is the habit I should have adopted at the beginning: write clear notes, label the intended function, capture what testing shows, and store the record where someone can find it years later.
