Cave paintings reported at Brazil’s Itatiaia National Park may be 2,000–3,000 years old, but that is a preliminary estimate—not a confirmed date. Reported motifs include geometric designs and animal figures. The find documents a new site for investigation; the evidence available so far does not show that it changes everything about Brazilian archaeology.
Where were the cave paintings found?
The paintings are in a cave within Itatiaia National Park, in the Serra da Mantiqueira near the Rio de Janeiro–Minas Gerais border. Reports describe the site as being at high elevation. The precise location has not been provided for visitors, and it should not be sought out independently.
Are the paintings really 3,000 years old?
Not as an established fact. In April 2025, archaeologist MaDu Gaspar described an age of 2,000–3,000 years as a possibility and said the research was still at an early stage. The estimate was reported by Arkeonews, which attributed the remarks to an interview with Agência Brasil. The available reports do not provide a published dating result, so “possibly 2,000–3,000 years old” is more accurate than calling the paintings definitively 3,000 years old.
Who discovered the cave?
Park operational supervisor Andres Conquista reportedly encountered it during a climbing trip in 2023. He had headed toward an area with red lilies and initially wondered whether the marks on the rock were graffiti. After photographing them, he alerted park staff. The discovery was not publicized immediately; reports say protective measures were being prepared first.

What do the paintings show?
Reports describe mostly geometric designs alongside some animal figures, including a lizard depicted from above. Researchers were reported to be surveying the surrounding landscape and exploring possible connections with other archaeological sites in the region. Those investigations do not establish who made the paintings or prove a particular cultural tradition, migration, or link to another site.
Can visitors see the Itatiaia cave paintings?
Reporting in April 2025 said the area had been secured, monitored with cameras, and closed to visitors while protection and research continued; it gave no reopening date. That report is not a current official access notice. Check with Itatiaia National Park authorities for present conditions, and do not attempt to locate or enter the cave.

What does this discovery change?
The find adds a newly documented place for archaeologists to study and may draw attention to rock art beyond areas that have received more archaeological investigation. But the available reporting does not establish its regional significance or support the claim that it overturns what is known about Brazilian archaeology. That judgment depends on further fieldwork, dating, and published analysis.
