Celestarium is Audry Nicklin’s circular knitted “pi shawl,” charting the night sky as viewed from the North Pole. Eyelets and beads represent stars, while the bead at the center marks Polaris. It combines a precise astronomical concept with a practical, center-out construction and a knitted-on garter-stitch border.
What the Celestarium Shawl represents
The design is an accurate North-Pole sky map translated into knitted fabric. The center bead is Polaris, the North Star; surrounding eyelets and beads place the remaining stars across the circular shawl. Because the viewpoint is the North Pole, the design depicts the northern celestial region rather than a generic all-sky constellation chart.
Nicklin’s pattern was published in November 2012. Ravelry describes Celestarium as the sister shawl to Southern Skies and the cousin of Equatorial Nights, an infinity scarf centered on the celestial equator. Celestarium has also been highlighted among science-themed knitting patterns by Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Biomedical Odyssey, making it a natural project for knitters interested in astronomy.

Finished size and materials
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Finished dimensions | Approximately 46 in / 117 cm in diameter |
| Yarn | Fingering weight, approximately 1,200 yd / 1,097 m |
| Suggested yarn | Blue Moon Fiber Arts Seduction, as listed by Ravelry |
| Needles | US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles |
| Beads | Seed beads; an Atelier Yarns kit specifies 370 size 6/0 beads |
| Other tools | Small crochet hook (the kit lists 0.75 mm), stitch markers and a method for holding or prestringing the first bead |
Yardage is an approximate requirement, so swatch and consider your own gauge, fiber choice and blocking tension before committing to a colorway. A smooth fingering yarn makes the eyelets legible; a lightly contrasting bead color helps the star field remain visible without overwhelming the fabric.

How the construction works
Center-out pi-shawl shaping
Work begins at the center and expands outward through successive increases. This construction produces the circular “pi” geometry and lets the star map grow in concentric areas.
Bead placement
The first bead is prestrung. Later beads are attached as you knit with a small crochet hook, allowing them to be positioned at the eyelets specified by the chart. The center bead is not merely decorative: it identifies Polaris in the finished map.

Markers and stitch management
Once the round exceeds 72 stitches, place stitch markers every 72 stitches. These divisions make long rounds easier to count and help locate chart errors before they spread across the growing shawl.
Knitted-on edging
The outer border is a knitted-on garter-stitch edging. It is worked separately from the main circular fabric as the shawl’s final perimeter, giving the edge a defined, textured finish.

What knitting the pattern demands
- Comfort with circular knitting: rounds become progressively longer, so consistent tension and reliable counting matter.
- Chart discipline: the design encodes a sky map, making accurate eyelet and bead placement more important than improvisation.
- Bead handling: prestringing and crochet-hook application are different techniques; practice both on a small swatch if they are new to you.
- Blocking space: a 46-inch / 117-cm circle needs a large, clean surface and enough pins or wires to open the eyelets evenly.
Choosing yarn, beads and needles
Yarn
Plan on about 1,200 yards / 1,097 metres of fingering-weight yarn. Blue Moon Fiber Arts Seduction is the yarn named in the Ravelry listing, but an equivalent fingering yarn can be selected by fiber, color and drape. A darker or graduated color can suggest a night sky; a solid or gently tonal shade generally keeps the charted structure easiest to read.
Beads
Size 6/0 seed beads are the quantity and size documented for the Atelier Yarns kit, which lists 370 beads. Confirm the pattern’s current bead instructions before purchasing, because substitutions in size, hole diameter or finish can change how easily a bead passes over the yarn and how heavily it sits on the fabric.

Needles and hook
Use US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles for the shawl. As the circumference grows, a longer cable can make the stitches less crowded. A 0.75 mm crochet hook is the size recorded in the kit listing; choose a hook that fits through your beads and can safely lift a stitch without splitting the yarn.

Buying the pattern and a kit
Ravelry lists the paid Celestarium pattern by Audry Nicklin. Price and digital availability can change, so check the live listing when you are ready to buy.
Best Value
Atelier Yarns documented a kit containing three 400-yard skeins of Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere (70% superwash merino, 20% cashmere and 10% nylon), 370 size 6/0 seed beads, US 4 circular needles, a 0.75 mm crochet hook and stitch markers. That listing states that the pattern is not included and was marked sold out. Treat it as a materials reference rather than an assurance that the kit is currently obtainable.
How Celestarium relates to the companion designs
| Design | Sky region | Form | Published details in the available descriptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celestarium | North-Pole sky | Circular knitted shawl | 46 in / 117 cm diameter; fingering yarn; beaded eyelet star map |
| Southern Skies | Southern sky | Not stated in the available description | Named by Ravelry as Celestarium’s sister shawl |
| Equatorial Nights | Celestial equator | Infinity scarf | Named by Ravelry as Celestarium’s cousin; dimensions and complete materials are not stated |
The available descriptions do not establish a standardized difficulty ranking among the three designs. Compare the actual pattern pages for their current charts, dimensions, yarn quantities and bead instructions rather than assuming that the family relationship means identical construction or skill requirements.
Quick Recap
A practical project plan
- Confirm the live pattern listing: check the current Ravelry page, price and file format before buying supplies.
- Swatch the fabric: test the specified needle size with your chosen fingering yarn, including at least one eyelet and bead technique.
- Gather and count materials: secure approximately 1,200 yards of yarn, compatible seed beads, a small crochet hook and enough markers for 72-stitch divisions.
- Set up the center: follow the pattern’s cast-on and prestring the first bead exactly as directed.
- Track each expanding round: use the 72-stitch markers once required and record completed chart sections.
- Attach beads as you work: use the crochet hook for later beads and check that each one sits at the intended eyelet.
- Finish and block: work the knitted-on garter edging, then wet-block the circle gradually to open the eyelets and even the circumference.
