A cellulosic fire is an exposure associated with ordinary building combustibles such as wood, paper and other cellulose-based contents. In fire-protection practice, the term also means the standardized time–temperature exposure used to compare how building elements withstand a conventional building fire. That laboratory curve is not a prediction of every fire in a room. It is a controlled benchmark, and the resulting rating applies only within the tested construction, loading and acceptance criteria.
For a building project, the correct question is not simply “How many minutes of fire resistance is required?” It is “Which jurisdictionally adopted test, fire exposure, assembly and rating method applies to this element?” A cellulosic test cannot be substituted for a hydrocarbon pool-fire test, and a rating from one tested assembly does not automatically transfer to another.

The word cellulosic refers to the fuel analogy: the fire load is made up largely of ordinary building materials and contents, especially wood and paper. A compartment containing furniture, finishes, documents and timber products is the familiar setting behind the conventional building-fire exposure.
In engineering specifications, however, “cellulosic fire” usually identifies a standardized furnace exposure, not a unique natural-fire shape. The furnace follows a prescribed temperature–time curve so that walls, partitions, columns, beams, floors, roofs and other elements can be compared under repeatable conditions. The test asks how long the specimen contains fire, retains structural integrity, or does both.

This distinction matters. ASTM International states in ASTM E119-26, section 4.2, that the exposure “is not representative of all fire conditions because conditions vary with changes in the amount, nature and distribution of fire loading, ventilation, compartment size and configuration, and heat sink characteristics of the compartment.” The same section says the test provides “a relative measure of the fire-test-response of comparable building elements under these fire exposure conditions.” A rating is therefore evidence about a tested configuration, not a guarantee that an identical time will occur in every real building fire.
How the standard cellulosic curve works
A furnace temperature is increased according to a defined curve rather than according to the temperature history of one particular room. The curve gives laboratories a common heating regime, while the specimen is observed for the required performance criteria. The duration—30, 60, 90, 120 minutes and so on—is meaningful only together with the standard, specimen construction, applied load and pass/fail rules.

They are standard-curve temperatures, not measurements or predictions for a particular building fire:
| Elapsed exposure | ASTM E119 curve | ISO 834 curve |
|---|---|---|
| 5 minutes | 538°C | 576°C |
| 60 minutes | 927°C | 945°C |
| 240 minutes | 1093°C | 1153°C |
These curves are close enough to be discussed together as conventional building-fire exposures, but their labels are not interchangeable. A specification that names ASTM E119 is not automatically satisfied by a result obtained under ISO 834, or vice versa, unless the governing code or approval explicitly permits that substitution.
NIST gives the ISO 834 relationship as T = 345 log10(8t + 1) + T0, where t is time in minutes and T0 is the ambient temperature. The equation describes the furnace curve; it does not describe the full thermal history of a real compartment.

A real compartment fire is not the test curve
Actual fires can include an ignition and growth period, a fully developed phase and a decay phase. The path depends on the amount and arrangement of fuel, ventilation openings, room geometry, compartment size, construction materials and available heat sinks. A fuel-rich, well-ventilated room may develop differently from a lightly loaded or ventilation-limited room.

That makes results comparable, but it also limits what the result can prove. A 60-minute rating means the tested element met the specified criteria for the 60-minute exposure in the tested setup. It does not mean the element will remain intact for exactly 60 minutes in every fire, nor that an untested change in board type, joint detail, support condition, load or coating will preserve the rating.
Cellulosic versus hydrocarbon fire exposure
A hydrocarbon pool fire represents a different hazard: a structural member engulfed by flames from a large pool of burning hydrocarbons. NIST describes that hydrocarbon design curve as rising much faster than the ordinary standard building exposure and approaching approximately 1080°C above ambient as time increases. The asymptotic value belongs to the curve equation; it is not a universal peak temperature for every hydrocarbon incident.
| Comparison point | Cellulosic / standard building exposure | Hydrocarbon pool-fire exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel scenario represented | Ordinary cellulose-based building fuels such as wood and paper | Flames from a large pool of burning hydrocarbons engulfing a member |
| Heating behaviour | Conventional standard time–temperature furnace curve | Much more rapid rise than the ordinary building-fire curve |
| Typical use | Comparative fire-resistance testing of building elements | Design exposure for members subject to severe hydrocarbon pool-fire engulfment |
| Interchangeability | Does not establish performance for a hydrocarbon exposure | Does not become a cellulosic rating merely because the duration is the same |
Comparing only nominal durations is unsafe. A “60-minute” result under one exposure may involve a very different heat-up rate and thermal demand from a “60-minute” result under another. The fuel scenario, curve, test standard, assembly and acceptance criteria all have to match the design case.
Other exposures that should not be conflated
External fire exposure
NIST also describes a lower design curve for structural members outside a burning compartment. Such members are exposed to heat from the fire but are not engulfed in the same way as a member inside a pool of flames. An external-fire curve is therefore a separate design condition, not a reduced version of a cellulosic interior rating.

Jet fire
A jet fire is a pressurized hydrocarbon release forming a high-velocity flame. It is distinct from a pool fire because the release mechanism, flame impingement and thermal demands differ. An ordinary cellulosic rating should never be presented as proof of jet-fire performance, and a pool-fire result should not be assumed to cover a jet-fire scenario. The applicable project standard must identify the exposure explicitly.
What ASTM E119-26 covers
ASTM E119-26 is listed as active, with a last-update date of January 29, 2026. ASTM describes it as a method for evaluating the duration for which building elements contain fire, retain structural integrity, or both, under a controlled standard exposure. Its scope includes walls, partitions, columns, beams, slabs, and floor or roof assemblies.
The standard is a test method, not a universal design rating detached from construction details. The report belongs to the specimen that was tested: its materials, dimensions, joints, supports, reinforcement, loading and protective layers. If a design changes one of those features, the designer needs an approved extension, engineering analysis permitted by the code, or a new test rather than an assumption that the original minutes still apply.
Where ISO 834 fits
ISO 834-1:2025 specifies fire-resistance testing for construction elements under standardized time–temperature curves. The exact requirements and the way a country adopts them must be checked in the applicable national code or certification scheme. NIST’s comparison shows that the ISO 834 and ASTM E119 curves have different listed temperatures at the same elapsed times, so a project specification should name the adopted regime precisely.
ISO 3941:2026, published in January 2026, is a current fuel-based categorization of fire types. Its public summary does not provide the complete category definitions. Use the full standard and the local code before assigning letter classes or treating a category as equivalent to a particular resistance test.

How to choose the test for a building element
Use this sequence before selecting a coating, board system, enclosure or structural protection:
- Identify the design fire scenario. Decide whether the element is inside an ordinary building compartment, outside a burning compartment, exposed to a hydrocarbon pool fire, or subject to another defined hazard such as a jet fire.
- Confirm the governing jurisdiction. Codes adopt and modify test standards differently. Record the edition and national adoption that the authority having jurisdiction, building control body or contract specification requires.
- Name the element and its function. A load-bearing column, a separating wall and a floor assembly can have different performance criteria even when the requested duration is identical.
- Check the complete tested assembly. Match the substrate, framing, boards, insulation, fasteners, joints, penetrations, supports and applied load to the listed or certified construction. A decorative finish or protective coating is part of the fire system only when the evidence covers it.
- Verify the acceptance criteria. Determine whether the requirement is containment, structural integrity, insulation, or a combination. Confirm how openings, joints and service penetrations are addressed.
- Document the result with its exposure and standard. State the test method, edition, duration, specimen description and any field limitations. Do not write only “fire-rated” or “60 minutes” without those qualifiers.
Implications for architectural finishes and painting
Paint colour, sheen and ordinary decorative paint do not create a fire-resistance rating by themselves. If a project uses an intumescent coating or another protective finish, its permitted substrate, dry-film thickness, preparation, primer, topcoat, application conditions and inspection requirements must come from the tested or assessed system. Changing a product, thickness or layer order can invalidate the evidence even when the finished appearance is unchanged.
Coordinate the finish schedule with the fire strategy and the tested assembly before work starts. Keep records of product identification, batch information, applied thickness and areas where the system is interrupted by repairs, penetrations or later refurbishment. Those records help demonstrate that the installed work corresponds to the construction that achieved the stated result.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling the curve a prediction
Standard temperatures are often quoted as though they were the temperature a particular room will reach. Label them as furnace-curve values and explain that real fires vary with fuel, ventilation and configuration.
Using “cellulosic” as a universal fire class
The term describes a fuel analogy and a family of standard exposures. It does not replace the jurisdiction’s formal test designation or the assembly’s certification.

Substituting a hydrocarbon result
A faster-rising hydrocarbon exposure imposes a different thermal demand. A cellulosic rating cannot be used for a hydrocarbon hazard unless the governing approval specifically demonstrates that performance.
Transferring a rating to an altered assembly
Removing a layer, changing a joint, adding a penetration or using a different support can change heat transfer and structural behaviour. Check the exact tested construction or obtain an accepted assessment.
Relying on an old code edition
NIST’s technical comparisons are useful for understanding the curves, but older references do not establish current project compliance. Check the current adopted code and standards, including the active ASTM E119-26 listing and the applicable ISO or national document.
A practical specification checklist
- Exposure named: cellulosic, hydrocarbon pool, external, jet or another defined scenario.
- Test standard and edition identified, including any national adoption.
- Element type and whether it is load-bearing, separating or both.
- Required performance criteria and duration stated together.
- Tested assembly, support, loading and penetrations matched to the design.
- Protective coating or finish covered by the same evidence, with application controls recorded.
- Authority having jurisdiction or certifier consulted where the code permits alternatives.
The safest interpretation is straightforward: use a cellulosic test for the ordinary building-fire exposure only when that is what the code and hazard assessment require; use a hydrocarbon, external-fire or other specialized test when the scenario demands it. Then specify the complete tested assembly, not an isolated product or an unsupported number of minutes.
